Many factors make up a healthy community. Some of the major indicators include high school graduation rates, economic stability, physical activity, prevention of injuries and access to health care, affordable healthy food, and a clean environment. For the benefit of our shared community, some of KRCB programming will shine a spotlight on these societal issues and remedies. Health Connections programs are aired in the belief that knowledge is power, and working together we can make our community one of the healthiest in the nation. This month, we take a broader look at health and delve into the social determinants underlying healthy and unhealthy communities.
Sunday, September 29 at 7 pm Dr. Claire Polmeroy says that if you look at the health of a population, its only determined about ten percent by what we do in hospitals, clinics, and doctors offices. Ninety percent of the health of a population is determined by other factors. In the documentary Zip Code, we look at how the environment in which we work, live, and play is the ultimate determinant of how healthy we are.

Sunday, September 22 at 10:30 pm Papers is the story of undocumented youth and the challenges they face as they turn 18 without legal status. Eleven million undocumented immigrants live in the United States. Of those, four and a half million were brought to the United States as children. These are young people who were educated in American schools, hold American values, know only the United States as home and who, upon high school graduation, find the door to their future slammed shut. Sixty-five thousand undocumented students graduate every year from high school without papers. It is against the law for them to work or drive. It is difficult, if not impossible in some states, to attend college. They live at risk of arrest, detention, and deportation to countries they may not even remember. This is their story.
