Happy Teachers Day to all Teachers and Students
Its our pleasure to edit the third issue of Sophia on the occasion of teachers day and our
magazine entered in the second year of its publication with a great appreciation and
encouragement from seniors and students of philosophy. In this issue we tried to include
material on various perspectives. This year being celebrated as 150
birth anniversary of
Swami Vivekananda so we tried to include some material to reflect his philosophy. Swami
Vivekananda is considered as a great teacher, a philosopher and a spiritual guru in the
history of thought in India. 5
September, 1888 is the birthday of Indian philosopher and
statesman Dr. S.Radhakrishanan and celebrated as Teachers Day in India every year. On this
occasion, it gives me immense pleasure to discuss about the great scientist philosopher of
India as he contributed a lot in the social and academic life of Indian people. He became an
example of an ideal teacher as well as a great thinker. Here we also include several poems,
articles, and thoughts, collected and written by students of philosophy. Hope this issue also
appreciates by our fellow friends.

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam: The Scientist- Philosopher
Bharta Ratna Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam usually referred to as Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. He
was awarded the Padma Bhushan and Bharat Ratna, and then he became the President of India; one
of the few presidents who have touched the hearts of so many poor children in the country. Because
he also came from a poor background, he knew the power of education in changing one's future.
About the importance of Teachers Day Dr. Kalam said, On this day, we gratefully remember the
great educationist Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, whose dream was that Teachers should be the
best minds in the country. Hence, Teachers' Day is very important for all people, for our students
and even for all the parents, as the teachers lay the foundation for creating enlightened citizens for
the nation.
Dr. Kalam was born on 15 October, 1931 in a Tamil Muslim family. His fathers name was
Jainulabiddin and mothers name was Ashianna. He came from a poor family. After completing
school Kalam distributed newspaper in order to financially contribute to his fathers income. He
completed his school education from Rameshwaram Elementary School. Then he went to attend
Saint Josephs College, and affiliated with the University of Madras, from where he graduated in
physics in 1954. In 1955 he completed his study in aerospace engineering. He completed his
education from Madras Institute of Technology (MIT-Chennai) in 1960, he joined Aeronautical

Besides being a scientist of high caliber, the former president of India Dr. Abdul Kalam is also a poet
and a lover of music. Although he has a very few leisures in his busy schedule. He is also fond of
playing on Veena. He is a scientist who thinks, dreams, lives and breathes science. Also earlier the
greatness of the man is also his simplicity despite having many achievements and honours to his
credits. We are proud to have such a great president who enthuses us and champions the cause for
the exceptional work of advancement of science and public service of the highest order.
After being the president of the largest democracy of the world, perhaps none can have any
aspiration left, but Kalam has, of opening a school for the poor children in Rameshwaram. Dr. Kalam
says, If you want to leave your foot prints on the sand of the time do not drag your feet. Great

dreams and Great dreamers are always rewarded with victory. Abdul Kalam is a dreamer. He
dreamt of a strong India. We can say that the heart of Dr. Kalam is full of pain and woes of pours and
debarred people and we can say confidently that Dr. Kalam would remain the President of the
hearts of Indians till there are sun and moon in the sky and will remain a great inspiration for youth.

Philosophical Quotes by Swami Vivekananda
Each soul is potentially divine. The goal is to manifest this divinity within, by controlling
nature, external and internal. Do this either by work, or worship, or physic control, or all of
these- and be free. This is the whole of the religion. Doctrines, or dogmas, or rituals, or
books, or temples, or forms, are but secondary details.
To succeed, you must have tremendous perseverance, tremendous will. I will drink the
ocean, says the preserving soul; At my will mountains will crumble up. Have that sort of
energy, that soul of will; work hard, and you will reach the goal.
This life is short, the vanities of the world are transient, but they alone live who live for
others, the rest are more dead than alive.
The powers of the mind are like the rays of the sun when they are concerned they
Women will work out their destinies- much better too, than men can ever do for them. All
the mischief to women has come because men undertook to shape the destiny of women.

Living Immortality
Use the time of your life, develop your inner happiness. Recognize the impermanence of all other
pleasure, live as a yogi, do your spiritual practices, work as bodhisattva for a happy world. Turn
your world into the paradise sukhvati by unfolding the enlightenment. Energy within you, each
you a spiritual master, who knows the goal of enlightenment, changes your world into a place of
grace. By understanding all the phenomena. As spiritual exercise. Dedicate your actions to the
benefit of all beings and send them the light of happiness. So you can get the energy of light.

Philosophical Poetry: A wake-up song by David

It has always so been
God is nowhere seen
Everyone is ruled by gold
Everything bought and sold.....
On the earth and on the sea
In the sky wherever we
Ever take our abode
Everywhere, where the road..
Take us, all we crave the same
Gold and power and fame
We forget what we were made
For by God, and what he bade
Us to do: to fight for him
Till hands weak and mind dim
Did the promethean fire
Get extinguished or just tired?
It has rested too long!
Let us wake with this song!

World of Kids
My four years old cousin Harsh went for admission in school. The teacher, who was interviewed,
asked her, Papa jab office jate hain to unke sar par kya hota hai?
The teacher was expecting the answer to be HELMET but to her surprise,
he replied, MEHANDI.

Give Respect

Give respect to a woman
Your mother your sister
Your daughter are
There in the woman
A woman is your wife
And producing your children
With much difficulties
And rearing them
Sacrificing everything
Giving you pleasure
At lifes risk
A woman is woman
You men cannot describe
A woman being the product
Of a woman
You just give respect
And beg excuse
I know wrong is with you..

A gentleman once visited a temple where he saw a sculptor making an idol lying nearby. Surprised, he
asked the sculptor, Do you need two of the same idol? No said the sculptor without looking up, we
need only one, but the first one got damaged at the last stage. The man examined the idol and found no
apparent damage where is the damage? he asked. There is a scratch on the nose of the idol, said the
sculptor, still busy with his work. Where are you going to install the idol? The sculptor replied that it
would installed on the pillar 20 feet high. If the idol is that for, who is going to know that there is scratch
on the nose? the man asked. The sculptor stopped his work, looked up at the gentle man, smiled and
said, I know it and God knows it. The desire is to excel should be exclusive of the fact whether someone
appreciates it or not. Excellence is daring from inside, not outside. Excel at a task today, not necessarily
for someone else to notice, but for your own satisfaction.

This life Is Made of Time

The life is made of time
And the time is made of seconds
Seconds are more precious
Than silver, gold and diamonds..

No one keep a second
In a bank locker or an almirah
But it could do a wonder
For years or an era.
The greatest wonder is love
A love leave some legends
Seconds are more precious
Than silver, gold and diamonds.

In all the human beings
The same heart is beating
Every time everywhere
The story is repeating
People are parents, children
Wives and husbands
Seconds are more precious
Than silver, gold and diamonds..

Why should I waste a second
In hating or in fighting???
My life is meant for loving,
For singing and reciting
The praises of the one who-
Loves me in hundred, thousands
Seconds are more precious
Than silver, gold and diamonds.

Keep up your head
Instead of bowing..
Use your head
Instead of following..
Why to bow?
When you are able enough..
You dont need to
Bow before others..
But, still, if you wish to bow
Bow before your teachers..
Because they are the explorers
Of your hidden talents..
They have that experience
Thats why they are positioned
above God and parents..
