American men could very well be divided into just two groups those who will read the owners instruction manual in order to solve a problem, and those who try to figure it out on their own. Recently on vacation in Colorado, a Subaru belonging to our neighbor was loaned to us to drive while we were there. At one point, the check engine light came on. Preparing to leave the next day for a drive into the mountains, I did not want to risk ruining a friends car. I quickly opened the glove compartment, turned to the Table of Contents and Dr. Hayes Wicker read about the light. I did what was necessary, but eventually Senior Pastor had to do a computer scan at the dealership. All was well. The Bible is certainly the Creator/Owner manual for living. In order to man up, we men must dig into Gods Word but also get connected with other men. This is enhanced by our Band of Brothers Mens Ministry on Wednesday evenings, 6:25 p.m. in the Chapel. I look forward to teaching in a unique format this fall from Pauls letter to Philemon in a study entitled, Gods Manual for Meaningful Relationships. While I teach bi-monthly, our excellent pastoral staff will also share topically from a biblical perspective concerning related issues in an approach I call LifeApps. We will discuss how to deal with those who offend us: destroyers who are out to ruin us, spear-throwers and bullies, dividers of the fellowship in the home, those who enter into litigation against us, and bridge-burners who seemingly will not be reconciled. As you probably know, Pauls short letter to Philemon addresses the significant issues of identity, forgiveness, acceptance, reconciliation, and restitution. An enormous amount of truth is packed into that short book. It certainly reminds us to check our engines and make sure that we have tightened our grip on truth. I look forward to joining with our men as once again we man up, listen up, and huddle up in our small groups with table leaders. We will hear dynamic lay testimonies and grow in our friendships with one another. God calls us to truth to nail it down and flesh it out. As school has started and football season once again dominates the discussion of many, I will be kicking off a new sermon series in about a week: The Miracles of Jesus: Encountering His Power and Provision. This will be a fascinating study as we dig into the gospels and see that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Jesus will never desert you or forsake you because He is your helper (Hebrews 13:8, 5). The Gospel Manual is the best of all. Dont try to understand life or cope with its problems on your own.
