This week’s Architectural Digest focuses on three remarkable women in our area. Each of their homes is sided with clapboard, painted white, and scrupulously well maintained

A mile or two west of
Florence Higgins, you’ll find

of Esther Westendorf. Esther,
a mere 94 years old, was born
on the property in the same
house where she lives today.
After earning her degree at the
SUNY college in Plattsburg
and teaching elsewhere in
New York, Esther returned
to become the schoolmarm
of a one room schoolhouse
here on California Hill Road.
Esther’s property traces its
roots to the days the Holland
Land Company sold land near
Ellicottville that was plotted in
large sections; the Westendorf
property, immense as it seems,
was one of the smaller tracts,
just one-quarter of a section in
size.
Around the 1850s, when the

no trains ran to the county seat
with Sizzlin’ Country!” in Ellicottville, it is believed
that a short stagecoach line
linked the communities and
Esther’s home served as
a rest stop along the way.
Nowadays, the main room
where travelers presumably
stretched their legs is a cozy
kitchen full of cheerful flowers
that Esther nurtures to dress up
the curious wavy glass paned
windows and the inviting front
door entranceway.
The outbuldings on the
Medora Ball’s home is older than she is. Though the 40 acres on which it stands were
undoubtedly used as farmland, the house is more of a salt box style which fits right in
among the attractive newer homes that line Medora’s country road.

an 18-year-old. She tends her own garden and keeps house for herself on a corner that
looks out on Maples Square (that’s what she calls the intersection where Maples Road
makes a 90 degree turn toward Otto).

Michael Joseph Hibbard’s
sculptures are massive
structures, often reaching over

from angular facets of welded

and plastic bottles. Hibbard
paints his sculptures, at times
in a single bold hue, but more
often in two colors to emphasize
individual planes.
While made from welded
metal, the sculptures have a
lively sense of movement,
reaching and bending in space
or along the ground. The work
is abstract, while reflecting the
artist’s interest in contemporary

On to Cattaraugus, another
lovely Centenarian (born
February 10, 1909) and another
lovely home. This is Medora
Ball, whose career spanned
many years as a Registered
Nurse at Children’s Hospital
of Buffalo while she also cared
for her husband, Ellis Ball,
who suffered severe injuries
while fighting in World War I.
Like Florence, Medora
remembers the difficulties she
had as a child getting around
in the wintertime. She says
her father hitched up horses

In the Griifis Sculpture Park
exhibition, Hibbard will show
eight major pieces from the
past three years. They show the
range of his work and include
both monumental towers and
horizontally-based pieces.
Hibbard has exhibited his
sculptures in many group
exhibitions including two

the Albright-Knox Gallery,
Buffalo, Diane DeBilzan
Gallery, Laguna Beach, Calif.
and the NCECA Exhibition at
the Pittsburgh Center for the
Arts. Hibbard’s work is part
of many corporate collections.
He received his BS degree in
Ceramic Design from Buffalo
State College in 2007.

Thinking about these women
led my mind back to the time
when I was encouraging my
mother to leave her home in
Ohio and move in with me.
She hesitated because she felt
that Ellicottville was just for
ski-minded 30-somethings and
that she, in her 90s, would not
fit in. Little did she realize that
our carefree little community
was settled by fearless men
and indomitable women and
that many of them are still
around to inspire us.

Heart Of A Sicilian Chef
Women and the Seduction of Chocolate

With this year’s Women’s
weekend festival upon us, I
can’t help but think about the
women who throughout history,
changed the face of cooking as
we know it today. The women
who have searched out the
farthest corners of the earth
to find the exotic ingredient to
finish off their most exquisite
dish. But, really, when I think
of women, what comes to mind,
besides the obvious, is one word,
chocolate. That’s right, hand
in hand, no two other words fit
better together. Considered the
ultimate, sinful pleasure, it’s a
sensual love chemical wrapped
up in an aphrodisiac that sends
the pleasure centers of the brain
skyrocketing. Its most intense,
yet delicate flavor compliments
and captures the pure essence
of a woman. Its texture is
smooth and creamy and always
simplistically rich to the last bite.
With its delicate, stimulating
persona, it will seduce and
create a paradise within your
mouth. Eating chocolate, it’s
beauty and passion with an
added decadent twist. It’s an
intense energy, an avalanche of
flavor, and the poison of choice
chosen over even the finest
liqueurs. Derived and processed
from the cacao tree, it is native
to South America and has been
cultivated for thousands of
years. Fermented, dried, cleaned
and roasted to expose the nibs,
This Week’s Recipe: Chocolate Decadence Cake
INGREDIENTS:
12 ounces semi-sweet
chocolate chips
4 (1 ounce) squares
unsweetened chocolate
1 ½ cups melted butter
1 ¾ cups white sugar
½ cup water
7 eggs
2 cups whipped cream
METHOD:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
F (175 degrees C). Grease a
10-inch round pan and line
bottom with parchment paper.
Chop chocolate squares and
place in a large bowl with
chocolate chips. Add melted
butter. Heat water and 1-1/2
cups sugar in a saucepan until
boiling, and then pour over
chocolate. Stir until smooth.
In a separate bowl, whip eggs
with remaining 1/4 cup sugar
until thick. Fold into chocolate
mixture. Pour batter into a 10-
inch pan. Place 10-inch pan
on a cookie sheet in the oven
and fill the cookie sheet with
water. Bake at 350 degrees F
(175 degrees C) for 40 to 50
minutes. Remove from oven.
Cool and refrigerate for several
hours. Be extremely careful
not to burn yourself on the hot
water when removing the sheet
pan from the oven. Dip the pan
in hot water to remove cooled
cake. Garnish with whipped
cream and fresh raspberries

Camp Broadway’s summer program includes instruction in voice, acting, dance,
movement and solo and ensemble singing while learning and rehearsing dialogue,
musical numbers and dance routines for a featured Broadway musical of the week. The
program also includes the “Gypsy Showcase,” a theatrical competition that requires the
campers to work together as a team to create an original theatrical piece that showcases
their creativity and individual talents. The week program culminates July 10 in the
“Family Finale,” a final presentation for family and friends.

1960s counterculture and
includes seldom-seen prints
and other works on paper
from the Permanent Collection
along with cover art from rock
music albums of the time on
loan to the Gallery from local
private collectors. The art
that sprang from the 1960s
counterculture, which fuses
elements of Surrealism and
Pop art with swirling patterns,
neon colors, repeated motifs,
and bizarre iconography,
speaks to a wide range of
social, political, and spiritual
themes. This selection of
works installed in the Clifton
Hall Link features works by
such artists as Les Levine,
Werner Philips, Joe Tilson,
Larry Slezak, and William
Weege, and illuminates an era
that produced some of the most
culturally responsive imagery
in American history.
