Leadership is the art of

motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal.

Keys of definition
Art: how to be genius to adopt the right and the best way

Motivate: stimulate and encourage people to do

something without giving much orders. Achieve: get the objective with perfection. Goal: the objective

Style of leadership
In this part we will talk about the three major style of leadership; A. Authoritarian or autocratic style; B. Participative or democratic style; C. Delegative or Free Reign style.

A. Authoritarian (autocratic)

The Boss says to this employees: I

Authoritarian leader style is

Authoritarian leaders like to retain control over

the business and do not give the employees much freedom of action. Autocratic leaders set objectives, allocate tasks and expect obedience from subordinates

Advantages

More group productivity while leader watches

Group makes quicker decisions Often does the task themselves as it is quicker
Pushes the group.

Disadvantages

More group hostility

More dependence on leader More apathy in group

B. Participative (democratic)

The Boss says to this employees: Let's

work together to solve

this. . .

Participative leader style is

This style involves the leader including one or more employees in the decision making process. However, the leader maintains the final decision making authority.

Using this style is not a sign of weakness, rather it is a sign of strength that your employees will respect.

More individual responsibility

More friendliness Better implementation


More personal growth

More motivation Greater ultimate production

Slower decision making

Less initial production Leader can be unsure and makes everything a matter for group discussion.

C. Delegative ( free reign)

The Boss says to this employees: You two

take care of the problem

Delegative leader style is

The leader allows the employees to make the decisions. The leader is still responsible for the decisions that are made.

Leader has little control.


Team has little direction or motivation.

Advantages

No work for the leader

Frustration may force others into leadership roles Allows the visionary worker the opportunity to do what they want, free from interference Empowers the group

Less group satisfaction

Less group productivity Poorer quality of work

Jobs fall back on someone else or are not completed

Expert Power

Referent Power

Sources of power
Used to affect others behavior and get them to act in given ways. Legitimate Power: managers authority resulting by their management position in the firm.

Can be power to hire/fire workers, assign work.

Reward Power: based on the managers ability to give or withhold rewards.

Pay raises, bonuses, verbal praise. Effective managers use reward power to signal employees they are doing a good job.

Sources of power

Coercive Power: based in ability to punish others.


Ranges from verbal reprimand to pay cuts to firing. Can have serious negative side effects.
First & middle managers have most expert power. Often found in technical ability.

Expert Power: based on special skills of leader.

Referent Power: results from personal characteristics of the leader which earn workers respect, loyalty and admiration.

Usually held by likable managers who are concerned about their workers.
