Ourcampaignwasconceivedofatatimethatsadlybroughttheissueofviolenceagainst women(VAW)totheattentionoftheentireworld.TheattackagainstMalalaYousafzaiand thebrutalgangrapeinIndiamadeittonewspaperandTVheadlinesalike.Thetimeisright, andthetimeisnowtoincreaseoureffortsandraiseourvoice. Thesmallpicturesof1BillionRisingeventsshowthepoweroforganizedaction. Thecampaigncolors black,red,purple aredisplayedthroughtheclothesthe participantswear. Anessentialelementthatweshoulduseinourowncampaignaswell.

AsanongovernmentalorganizationwiththeUN,ZontaInternationalhasalwaysworked closelywithitsvariousagencies.Infact,ourthreeZISVAWprojectsthisbienniumare managedbyUNWomen. Giventhisspecialrelationship,ZontalookedmorecloselyattheSayNOUNiTEcampaign whichwaslaunchedbyUNWomenin2009.Thatcampaigntitleandtheirproclamation thatthe25thofeverymonthbecalledOrangeDaytorecognizetheissueofviolence againstwomeninspiredtheZontaSaysNOCampaign.

ItwouldbegreatifpicturesfromtheentireZontaworldshowingorangeandblackandthe campaignlogoweresentfromyoutopr@zonta.org.Theuseofcolorsandlogo demonstratethatZontaisunitedbyacommongoal.Asmuchasweappreciateour diversity,ifwewanttobeperceivedaspowerfuladvocates,thisunityhastobeshown.

Weoftenreceivequestionsastowhatittakestoparticipateifaclubcannotplanabig event.Well,anyindividualorclubactionthatisbrandedbyourcampaignlogoispartofthe campaign.

ThispastApril,TheZCofTrentonMercer,NJD3USAorganizedits13thannualRapeand ViolenceEradicationWalkorRAVEforshort. Thiswalkdemonstratestwothings1.thedifferencethatwecanmakewhenwereachout tocommunityorganizationsandpolicedepartmentswithinourowncommunitiesand2. thetruthinthesaying,Ajourneyofathousandmilesbeginswithasinglestep. In2001,theclubsStatusofWomenServiceCommitteewantedtostartaZISVAWproject withintheircommunityofMercerCounty. ThecommitteeconsultedwithWomanspace,anonprofitwhichprovidescounselingand servicestovictimsofdomesticabuseandsexualassault.Aftermeetingwitha representativefromalocalpolicedepartment,theZontianswereinvitedtoattenda meetingofthenewlyformedDomesticViolenceVictimsResponseTeam.Thatteamof volunteers,whoaretrainedbymembersofWomanspace,meetwithvictimsafteran abusiveincidentinspeciallyequippedareasinlocalpolicestations. ProceedsfromthewalksupportWomanspace,theResponseTeam,andsince2004the SexualAssaultSupportServicesAdvocates. Inthelast7years,morethan$46,000UShavebeenraisedtosupportwomenandchildren victimsinMercerCounty.

TheZontaClubsofAlessandriaandCasaleMonferratoinItaly,District30,exhibited womensshoestorepresentvictimsofviolence.Thisactionhasalreadyinspiredanumber ofclubsinotherpartsoftheworld.InGermany,weknowofatleast15clubsthatare planningtomakeshoespartoftheirNovember/DecemberZontaSaysNOevent.

Aswelookatthispicture,theideatoprepareaflashmobcouldcrossourmind.Organizing aspectacular,funeventtoraiseawarenessofaseriousissue. IfwehadthetwoUNiTEbannersexchangedagainstZontaSaysNObanners,theaction documentedinthepictureabovewouldalreadybeaperfectexampleofwhatclubscould do.Wearingorangeandblackunderscoresandstrengthensthemessage.
