Jose Juarez Ms. Bell English IV/Period 4 29 August 2013 Green Lantern Comic books, every kid has a great childhood with it. But growing up with the green lanterns is even better. Comics have always caught the attention of the American people, from using them to encourage people to support the war to just plain entertainment. Nowadays todays youth doesnt have the luxury of knowing what an actual childhood is, thanks to technology. Green lanterns especially being one of the big superheroes alongside others such as Batman, Superman, and even Captain America are all more than just fictional characters but icons in todays view. In 1754 one of Americas founding fathers had left a stepping stone for future writers to later create the comic. His first editorial cartoon was published in a newspaper which had featured an illustration of Benjamin Franklin of a snake with a severed head and hand printed words across it Join, or Die. Its intentions were to goad the colonies into joining what has now become the United States. Comics are not always about just superheroes it seems creators are now shining the light on villains as well. History 101 Experts say that the precursors of the modern comic wouldnt be possible if it wasnt for the satirical works of artist like Rudolph Topffer, Wilhelm Bush, Christophe, and Angelo Agostini who was the first Brazilian comic artist. In 1827 Switzerland native Rudolph Topffer had created a comic strip and several graphic novels. The late 1830s Rudolph Topffer had published The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck, which would be considered the earliest known

comic book. It had also become the first comic book to be published in the United States in 1842. Obadiah Oldbuck was a forty page book which consisted of several picture panels after each page with accompanying text underneath. German poet and artist, Wilhelm Bush had been known for his famous comic called Max und Moritz published in Fliegende Blatter newspaper in 1865. Yellow Kid created by Richard outcault in 1895 has also been cited as the first comic strip as well during the platinum age. This was said because it was Richard Outcault who was the first to use the balloon, an outlined space on the page where what the characters spoke was written. During the platinum age which had lasted from 1897 to 1938 many writers had been using different formats. The Yellow Kid comic was 5 x 7 , on the other hand another comic Funny Folks which became published in 1899 not by the creator F. M. Howarth but by E. P. Dutton, had challenged the usual format by a Hardcover, 16 wide by 12 tall. The first known full color comic was The Blackberries in 1901. The lantern Corps In the new lantern corps in which the old lantern corps was destroyed by Parallax are more formal and structured. After recruits have been found by their rings they are taken to a planet called Oa to begin training right away. Only a few are able to withstand the power of the ring. Most will fail forcing the ring to find another candidate across the galaxy. The trainees of Lanterns wear a simplified version of the old Lantern corps uniform which consists of green covering the upper torso with a white circle in the middle of their chest with the lantern insignia. It can only be added after training is complete. Formally up until the new recruits the ring can now work on the color yellow, provided if the wielder of the ring has fear in their mind. The Lantern Power Ring considered to be the most important tool a Lantern has equipped, can create constructs that take the form of what the user imagines with the ultimate will power to express

and channel to the ring. The ring is as powerful as the wielder. If the wielder is strong the ring is strong, but if the wielder is weak the ring will reject the host and look for a user who is worthy of its power to control it. Just because its a ring doesnt mean it doesnt have a mind of its own and with that the ring can understand the users feelings and thoughts. If for whatever reason a fellow Lantern perishes on the battlefield against evil the ring will find a worthy successor to replace it. The power from the ring is infinite but does have to be charged through a Actual Green Lantern which glows when charging. The energy source provided for the ring does not come from the Green Lantern itself but from the central battery power on planet Oa. The Almighty Writer Dave Gibbons was introduced into the British comics by working on horror and action titles for both Dc comics and IPC. Right from the beginning was a gruesome battle. Lots of detail added to the battlefield and some sensory details as well. Emerald City had such great scenery with mountains and metal buildings. The famous Central Power Battery sits atop a mountain glowing extremely bright. The Green Lantern movie also incorporates its scenery the same. The two main characters were introduced very well while five other Green Lanterns were introduced just by their names.

Green Lanterns as well as Dave Gibbons are both looked as superheroes. From the Early comic to the latest summer movie superheroes will live on forever. Dave Gibbons and Patrick Gleason have created an icon as big as Batman, Superman, and Captain America but they all have one thing in common, they believe in justice. No would ever imagine that comics would become so popular that they would become movies games or even shows. It just goes to show that if comics werent introduced what would happen to movies games or even technology. The concept of the Green Lanterns Power Ring can be used in everyday lives, if the mind is weak the user is weak but if the mind is strong the beholder has infinite power.
