Australia fuels Asias energy
boom, says policy report
A
n ambitious plan aimed at maximising links with the expanding economies of China and other
Asian nations will push Australia into the worlds top 10 wealthiest nations by 2025, the
Australian government has announced. An ambitious policy blueprint called Australia in the
Asian Century projects spanning from 2014 to 2027 next 13 years will confirm Australias links with
Asias rapid ascent as a global economic powerhouse led by the modernisation of China and India.
The scale and pace of Asias rise is staggering, and there are significant opportunities and
challenges for all Australians, Prime Minister Julia Gillard said. It is not enough to rely on luck
our future will be determined by the choices we make and how we engage with the region we live
in.
By 2025, Gillard said Australias GDP per person a measure of personal wealth would jump into
the worlds top 10, joining the likes of Qatar, Singapore, Hong Kong, Brunei, the United Arab
Emirates and the United States. It is currently ranked 13th, according to the International Monetary
Fund.
One-third of Australias economy would be underpinned by trade with Asia, up from one-quarter
today, and it would be one of the worlds top five countries to do business in. China, India,
Indonesia, Japan, South Korea and the US would be Australias key partners. Government Treasurer
Wayne Swan said the Asian region would soon be the worlds largest production and consumption
zone and was set to overtake the economic output of Europe and North America combined by the
end of this decade.
Coal will be the fuel of choice for Asias power stations. In 2010, Australia was confirmed as the
world's fourth-largest coal producer, after China, the United States, and India. However, in terms of
proportion of production exported, Australia is now the world's largest coal exporter, as it exports
roughly 70% of its coal production. Around 54% of all the coal mined in Australia is exported, mostly
to eastern Asia. Coal also underpins about 85% of Australia's electricity production. In the fiscal year
2008/09, 487 million tonnes of coal was mined, and 261 million tonnes exported.
If current trends continue, developing
Asia's energy consumption will more than
double over the next 30 years.
Energy demand in the region is
expected to exceed 5,000 Mtoe by 2030,
accounting for 30% of worldwide energy
demand (APERC, 2006; TERI, 2006).
Currently, much of this projected demand
for energy will be met with fossil fuels.
The trend is clear: in the region, coal use
is expected grow nearly four-fold by 2030
(IEA, 2006) and will be central to future
energy plans because of its availability
and price stability.
This is the thrust of a report Asias
Clean Energy Challenge produced by
USAID ASIA.

Sumitomo Electric Industries Limited has
successfully installed and demonstrated a MW-class
concentrating photovoltaic (CPV)/energy storage
system on the premises of its Yokohama Works in
Japan. The system consists of 28 units of CPV
(maximum total power generation of 200 kW) and a
large redox flow battery (capacity of 1 MW x 5
hours), which respectively functions as a storage
facility for the power generated by the CPV units.
The system employs an energy management system,
which monitors the amount of CPV-generated power,
battery storage and power consumption, and stores
the measurement data in the central server.
Sumitomo has co-operated with Nissin Electric
Company Limited., Sumitomo Densetsu Company
Limited and Meidensha Corporation on the
development of the system.
According to Sumitomo, this marks an important
technology development, particularly for Japan,
which continues to suffer from power shortages.
With the greater introduction of intermittent
renewable energy sources such as solar and wind
power, the use of a redox flow battery will help to
stable the power supply, and thus contribute to the
alleviation of power shortages.
Sumitomo Electric, in partnership with Meidensha,
is also working on the demonstration of a factory
energy management system, which combines the
Yokohama Works existing gas engine power genera-
tors with the redox flow battery and the CPV units
to create a management system which controls the
entire energy flow onsite.

ithin the last two years MTU has
reported a substantial expansion
of its influence within Indias gas
power generation market in the last two
years, installing over 20 MW in natural
and biogas applications.
The company showcased its latest
generation MTU Onsite Energy
AoE20V4000L62 gas genset at PowerGen
India, in April 2012. The AoE20V4000L62
gen-sets are said to be reliable, durable
and efficient and offer benefits such as
long service intervals, maintenance &
user-friendly features, and also ensure
maximum efficiency for the Type 4000
series natural gas gen-set range.
IIn 2011 MTU Onsite Energy supplied
eight gas-powered CHP modules to
Tognum subsidiary MTU Asia in Singapore.
The CHP modules are powered by 20V
4000 L62 gas engines, each with a
maximum electrical power output of
approximately 2 MW. The end customer
was the Indonesian textile manufacturer
PT Spinmill Indah Industry based in
Tangerang near Jakarta.
The company had been looking for a
sustainable solution but also a degree of
independence from the power grid, which
remains prone to unexpected outages,
even in 2012.
The core elements of the CHP modules,
which were built at Tognums Augsburg
site in Germany, are MTU 20V 4000 L62
engines with generators, cooling systems
and plant control. They were installed in
Gas gen-sets for Asia

Industrys cotton
spinning mill, where
they operate
continuously to provide
power for all production
processes and electrical
loads.The waste heat
generated is converted
by an absorption chiller
plant to provide cooling
power for the air-
conditioning system - a
combination which
achieves around a 90%
energy efficiency,
according to MTU.
In Indonesia a company
called Perusahaan Listrik
Negara (PLN) has been
tasked with the
challenge of increasing
output to meet the
needs of Indonesias
rapidly rising demand for electricity. To
supplement PLNs undertaking, the energy
company relies on MTU branded engines
from the German Tognum Group, the
specialist for propulsion and power
solutions. MTU Onsite Energy in Asia is the
business Unit for sales and services of
MTU branded engines for distributed
power generation systems.
The main challenge in delivering power
across Indonesia is overcoming its vast
and rugged terrain in remotely positioned
villages with extremely limited infrastruc-
ture. By utilizing MTU Series 1600 engines
to supply 24/7 nonstop power, even the
inhabitants in the most remote regions,
who previously were unable to receive
even a trickle of electricity, now enjoy a
steady stream of power. Two of these
villages are Fakfak and Kutacane.
MTU Onsite Energy has installed six 12V
Series 1600 engines (above) capable of
producing 634 kW each at 50 Hz and since
then have been running on a 24/7 basis to
sustain Fakfaks 2.4MWh peak demand.

MTU Onsite Energy recently installed an AoE20V4000L62 gas gen-set for U.P.Twiga
Fibers Glass Ltd in India. After success in West and South India, the U.P. Twiga project
marks an important entry for MTU Onsite Energy in the North Indian market. The company
has experienced considerable growth in Indias gas power generation market since 2010.

HI sees the production of the first
MHI gas turbines in the US as a
major development for its role in
the North American market.
Japan expects the demand for gas
turbine combined-cycle (GTCC) power
generation systems to increase, thereby
paving the way for the Savannah base to
play a core role in MHI's Power Systems
business expansion.
A ceremony was held at the Savannah
facility to celebrate the first unit's
shipment, attended by executives and
stakeholders of Dominion and representa-
tives of MHI, including Kenji Ando, Deputy
Head of the Power Systems business
division.
The Savannah Machinery Works were
constructed and are operated by
Mitsubishi Power Systems Americas, Inc.
(MPSA), the business base for MHI's Power
Systems operations in the U.S.
The first M501GAC gas turbine produced
in Savannah is to be installed at the
Warren County Power Station in Front
MHI produces first
Japanese-designed GTCC in the US
Royal, Virginia, which is being constructed
and will be operated by VEPCO. The unit
will serve as a core component of a GTCC
power station which, when completed,
will incorporate a total of three M501GAC
gas turbines and a steam turbine. The
remaining two gas turbines will also be
shipped from the Savannah plant at a
later time.
The Savannah Machinery Works engage
in the manufacture of core components of
gas and steam turbines and in turbine
assembly. They also perform maintenance
and conversion of large-size components
such as rotors.
An after-sale service shop for rotors and
an assembly shop for gas and steam
turbines have recently been completed at
the site and are now in operation.
A rotor manufacturing shop, currently
under construction, is targeted for
completion in the fall of 2013, at which
time it will have advanced production
lines similar to those at MHI's Takasago
Machinery Works in Hyogo Prefecture, the
company's main gas turbine production
facility. With completion of these shops at
the Savannah Machinery Works, MHI will
have a combined annual production
capacity of 50 gas turbines from its dual
(Japan-U.S.) manufacturing structure.
Dominion is one of the U.S.'s largest
producers and transporters of energy. The
company has a portfolio of approximately
28,000 megawatts of power generation,
11,000 miles of natural gas transmission,
gathering and storage pipelines, and 6,300
miles of electric transmission lines in the
Virginia and North Carolina area.
Following receipt of the order for core
equipment for the GTCC power plant at
the Warren County Power Station, MHI has
also received an order from VEPCO for the
same units - three M501GAC gas turbines
and one steam turbine - for its Brunswick
County Power Station. These turbines will
also be manufactured at and shipped from
the Savannah Machinery Works.
The M501GAC is one of the most
efficient and largest-capacity (60 hertz)
gas turbines in the world. To date MHI and
MPSA have received orders for over 75
units of M501G turbines worldwide.

wo reliable MWM TCG 2020V12K gas
gensets installed in PNG a year ago
serve the main shipping port in Port
Moresby. These are essentially two highly
efficient 1MW generators designed to
ensure stable energy supply. They support
the 24-hour operations of PNGPCL
personnel in Papua New Guinea.
The newly installed gas units will be
powered with propane before switching
over to LNG. The switch to the more
sustainable gas option is expected in the
near future upon the completion of an
LNG production facility in the Highlands
Region. It is expected that this facility
will feed these two highly-developed
MWM gas engines both of which are
perfectly manufactured to cope with
diverse gas compositions without the need
of engine modification.
The engines have an output range from
1,200 to 2,000 kWe and have the best
electrical and thermal efficiency in its
output class, reports MWM. The engine
have been designed to run on a wide
variety of gas types: natural gas, biogas,

landfill gas, sewage
gas, mine gas, etc.
As an engine, the
TCG 2020 is mainly
used for CHP plants
in Europe and for
biogas applications
worldwide.
The TCG 2020K
was especially
adapted to non-ISO
conditions such as
high altitudes or
high intake air
temperatures in the
field of natural gas.
More than 2,000
power generators
with approximately
2,800,000 kWe have
already been installed around the globe
MWM reports that improvements to the
intake duct and spark plug of the MWM
TCG 2020 V12K gas engine provide higher
efficiency compared to predecessor model
Improvements in Miller valve control
times have also increased
gen-set efficiency, says the
company.
The TCG 2020K has been
optimised for Isolated
Operation and Non-ISO
Conditions. It can achieve Load
Response in only seven steps,
and can supply power fast and
reliable in the event of grid
failures or in isolated
operation. A special 1,000 kWe
variant is available for high
altitude setup and different
intake air temperatures.
The fact that there are now
smaller dead spaces in the
combustion chamber ensures
that more complete combustion
takes place, says MWM. Reduced fuel
consumption and CO and HC emissions
enable gas savings of up to 15% a year and
increase the profitability of the plant.
The gas engines also feature higher
efficiency and long maintenance intervals.
More effective crankcase ventilation
increases the engines efficiency by using
the returned combustible blow-by gas.
An optimised blow-by return and
improved separation of the gas phase and
liquid phase enable longer maintenance
intervals for the turbocharger thanks to
the clean intake air, says MWM.
The improved output capacity of TCG
2020K is achieved under non-ISO
conditions and an excellent load response
can be attained thanks to an optimum
turbocharger design with a broad
performance map, reports MWM.

s part of the upgrade of the 500-kV
PleikuPhu Lam transmission line to
increase power capacity from 1,000
amps to 2,000 amps will see GE Series
capacitor banks installed by September
2013.
The 500-kV Pleiku-Phu Lam transmission
line, which is 500 km in length, is the
backbone of Vietnams North-to-South
power transmission. Increasing the
capacity of the line to transmit power
across the country more efficiently will
enable EVN to mobilise generation sources
to more effectively meet power demand,
which varies from region to region. When
it comes into operation in 2013, the
project is expected to supply around
800MW to the Southern area,
commented Dang Phan Tuong, chairman of
the Board of Management of NPT.
GE Energy Asia Pacific President Kenji
Uenishi told IPA: We are delighted with
this opportunity to assist Vietnam meet its
power needs. A healthy power
VietNams transmission
line upgrade for 2013
infrastructure is vital to supporting
economic growth. GEs advanced
equipment, services and partnership with
local corporations will enable Vietnam to
manage power needs more efficiently in
line with efforts to enhance current
infrastructure.
Under the terms of the contract, GE will
supply six series capacitor banks to NPT
and provide onsite supervision for
installation testing and commissioning.
The project uses GEs latest fuseless
technology to enable a 100% increase in
the current capacity of the existing
transmission line and installed
infrastructure.
GE will partner for the first time with a
local corporation, 3C Company, to provide
local content for the project.
Stuart Dean, GE CEO for ASEAN, said,
GE has been in ASEAN from its beginning
helping countries meet their energy and
power needs to accelerate development
plans and competitiveness in the industri-
al and manufacturing sectors. We believe
in making the world better and one of the
ways we do this is to build world-class
infrastructure.
GE's capacitor technology is proven
technology in Vietnam with the first GE
banks installed in the 1990s. This is the
second time GE has signed a contract
directly with NPT. The first involved a
similar capacitor banks installation in the
500-kV Da nang - Ha Tinh transmission
line.
The U.S. Export-Import Bank is financing
the project. Shipping and installation of
the capacitors at the three locations will
begin in April 2013, with commercial
operation set to begin in July 2013.
GE signed a memorandum of understand-
ing in March 2011 with NPT for both
companies to work together in an effort
to increase Vietnams power transmission
efficiency and expertise, while reducing
the risk of power shortages.
GE C&I Asia Pacific is the new combined
