A-1180 Carrier Ethernet Demarcation

Multi-Port Carrier Ethernet Demarcation

The A-1180 is a Carrier Ethernet Demarcation device that enables multiple Ethernet services to enterprises and business subscribers. Owned by service providers and located at the customer premise, it provides a clear demarcation point between customer and service provider networks. Besides delivering managed services to customers via MEF-UNI with QoS control for each service, the A-1180 has all the necessary carrier-class management and OAM functions essential for service providers to monitor network health and performance up to the demarcation point.

Product Highlights 8-port Fast Ethernet MEF-UNI supporting multiple services Q-in-Q based service mapping and identification Support for QoS attributes of SLA Modular FE and GE fiber uplink modules using pluggable SFP/SSF with transceiver information display and DDM (as per SFF-8472) functions OAM functions for remote trouble-shooting Full management integration with ASPEN, allowing point-and-click fast service provisioning

Ethernet Services, E-Line and E-LAN as defined by the Metro Ethernet Forum, have become the new revenue drivers for service providers serving business and residential customers worldwide. There is now an emerging need for Service providers to evolve their service strategy and offer multiple services using a single demarcation device at the customer location. While significantly reducing the cost of customer acquisition and adding new services to the same customer location, this strategy also reduced the complexity and overall cost of service delivery.

Working seamlessly with the A-Series Switches end-to-end Carrier Ethernet product portfolio, including the A-2000 family of edge switches, A-4100 aggregation switch and A-8100 metro core switch, the A-1180 allows service providers to deliver multiple services with guaranteed Committed Information Rate (CIR) and bursty Excess Information Rate (EIR) for each service. Simple and elegant point-and-click provisioning and management of the A-1180 and the broader Carrier Ethernet product portfolio is supported via ASPEN.

Product Overview
The A-1180 is a Carrier Ethernet Demarcation device with eight 10/100 Base-T Ethernet interfaces on the customer network side. Each service per port uses the Q-in-Q based service mapping and identification to provision an Ethernet Virtual Circuit (EVC) corresponding to the service. The uplink slot on the service provider network side supports both Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet uplink modules. The FE and GE uplink modules use pluggable SFP transceivers using either dual strands or single strand fibers of various distances, allowing service providers to cost effectively connect the A-1180 to fiber local loop.

Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) is also supported as per the SFF-8472 standard. For off-net deployment, a 10/100/1000Base-T uplink module is available, simplifying the co-location of the A-1180 with the access point of the 3rd party network.

Applications
Ethernet UNI for E-Line and E-LAN Services in a Nokia Siemens Networks A-Series Switches Environment Ethernet UNI for E-Line and E-LAN Services in Any Existing Edge/Core Network
The A-1180 is an ideal demarcation device for operators who want to replace the existing media converters or other legacy devices at the customer premise in order to deliver high-value Ethernet services to business customers. The A-1180 can be connected directly to the existing provider network via its FE or GE uplink interface and it can be managed, either in-band or outof-band, from a central location.

Ethernet UNI for E-Line and E-LAN Services in Off-Net

Carriers who want to offer Ethernet services outside their own regions may use off-net from a 3rd party service provider. The A-1180 can be used to connect the end customers on the access side and the off-net on the network side. A modular uplink provides the most convenient way to connect to the off-net.

Functioning as UNI for E-Line and E-LAN services, the A-1180 can be deployed as the endpoint of these services, working with A-1180 or A-2100 as the other endpoints across an A-Series Switches edge and core network. Operators can provision E-Line and E-LAN services in a point-and-click manner. Hard QoS is ensured for each service, and 50ms protection can be guaranteed within an A-Series Switches edge and core Customer Premise network.

Features & Benefits

Eight 10/100Base-TX Access Ports More Services and Applications
In a compact form factor, the A-1180 provides eight access ports which allows service providers to provision multiple services. The access ports can also be used for other applications like connecting the out-of-band management port of other CPEs at the same customer location so network management can be extended to those CPEs.

Per-port Rate Limiting & Priority Queuing Customized QoS for Each Service
The A-1180 supports configurable QoS, such as rate limiting and traffic prioritization, for each service. Used with other A-Series Switches edge and core products, the A-1180 supports Connection Admission Control (CAC) and allows service providers to provision CIR/EIR and delay/jitter bound for their SLA.

Modular Uplink Interface More Flexibility and Lower Migration Cost

The A-1180 uses a modular design for the uplink interface to the provider network. Service providers can choose the uplink module that: Best fits the last mile network Migrates smoothly from Fast Ethernet to Gigabit Ethernet local loop Connects the A-1180 in an off-net deployment

OAM Easy Remote Trouble Shooting

The A-1180 supports such OAM functions as: Link Fault Propagation Dying or Last Gasp Ethernet loopback Standard traps DDM for monitoring optical performance on the physical layer

Integrated in ASPEN Fault Manager and Device Properties, these OAM functions allow service providers to easily monitor the health of the network all the way to the demarcation point and receive precise error messages. In addition to the Fault Management capabilities listed above, the A-1180 supports standards based Performance Monitoring per the ITU-T Y.1731 standard. Performance monitoring statistics enabled by Y.1731 include Packet loss, delay, delay variation, and continuity.

Full Integration with ASPEN Easy Service Provisioning and Management

The A-1180 is fully managed by ASPEN, Nokia Siemens Networks industry-leading network management and service provisioning system. Ethernet services can be provisioned in a point-and-click manner with the A-1180 as the endpoint of the services.
