IMPERIAL PRIMARY SENIOR PHASE LESSON PLAN: 1

GRADE EDUCATOR DURATION YEAR

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

: 7e : A Smith : 1 x 1hr : 2009

LEARNING AREA THEME/TOPIC DATE TERM

: Mathematics : Number Patterns : 12 August 2009 :3

Learning Outcome 2: PATTERNS, FUNCTIONS AND ALGEBRA The learner will be able to recognise, describe and represent patterns and relationships, as well as to solve problems using algebraic language and skills.

ASSESSMENT STANDARDS:

7.2.1 Investigates and extends numeric and geometric patterns looking for a relationship or rules, including patterns: represented in physical or diagrammatic form; found in natural and cultural contexts; represented in tables. 7.2.2 Describes, explains and justifies observed relationships or rules in own words.
The learner should have an awareness of patterns in and around his own world. The learner shouldve been exposed to square numbers. The learner should also be able extend an existing pattern Drawing skills, counting skills, reasoning skills, predicting skills. The learner will learn how to extend number patterns. The learner will learn to find a rule to explain number patterns. The learner will learn how to be sensitive towards the occurrence of patterns in nature and in their communities and neighbouring township.

EDUCATOR

LEARNER TASK:
Learners observe and look at African artwork presented. Learners try to find patterns within artwork. Some learners goes up to the Interactive Whiteboard to help complete an existing pattern. Learners make predictions and suggestions about the pattern. Completes hand-outs. Gives feedback to class. Completes an individual Self-assessment.

ACTIVITIESCORE LESSON/

INTRODUCTION: Show learners a picture of African Art depicting patterns. Ask them to find patterns within artwork. Explain to them that patterns can be consistent and repetitive and It can change consistently, or vary.

MIDDLE: Invite learners to extend a pattern that the educator creates in front of learners on the interactive whiteboard. Invite learners to make predictions and suggestions about the pattern. Explain the fact that variables influence outcomes. Hand out two activities that will allow learners to demonstrate their ability to make mathematical sense out of the posed problems. Facilitates and guides learners with minimal prompts.

KEY CONCEPTS: Patterns enable us to make predictions about what will happen under certain conditions; and Predictions about the conditions needed for certain events to occur. CONCLUSION: Ask individual learners to present their work to the rest of the learners. Ask learners to talk about finding their rule. Invite learners to complete a self-assessment sheet to reflect on their own learning.
