Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 1, 2013

April 24, 2011 , 2010

When you enter our property off of Britton Road, the first thing you see is the shrine dedicated to Mary in front of the rectory, behind the sign that welcomes you to St. Stephen Church. Mike Haburay must have spent many hours working on it while I was away on vacation because it looks great with the new large stones that encircle it & with some of the old shrubbery removed. I believe there is also a walkway that will be installed as well. Our parish thanks Mike and Deacon Pete for a job well done! It will be enjoyed for years to come by people who enter our sacred space here in West Salem. We also thank Bev Zeigler who volunteered to coordinate the Parish Picnic that we had last Sunday. We had a nice number of people who enjoyed food, games & just the chance to sit around & talk to fellow members of the parish. The tables & chairs were set up under the pine cone trees & God gave us a beautiful day to enjoy the outdoors. Thanks to Bev & to all who brought something. Well have details soon of the campfire & hayrides that will be coming up in October. Life is always a mixture of good news & bad, of blessings & the need for prayer. Lois Yehlik is one of those in need of your prayers as she faces treatment for cancer that was discovered when she was about to have knee surgery. Frank & Lois have been parishioners for a long time & it wasnt too long ago that Frank recovered from knee surgery. They will be keeping me informed of the plan to attack this illness and your prayers are very much needed & appreciated. Please say a prayer right now & ask Our Lady Help of the Sick to intercede on Loiss behalf. We also turn to the one who prays for us now and at the hour of death as we fondly remember Lois Soria who passed away and whose Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated this past Wednesday. Lois had just entered hospice a few days before she was called home to God. She and Patrick used to attend bible study on Thursday mornings with Fr. Uhler and she had a great devotion to the Divine Mercy. She had been using a walker & was on oxygen for some time, but faithfully came to church with Pat. May she rest in the peace of that Divine Mercy.

This is a great way to follow the liturgical year of the Catholic Church one day at a time. There are interesting articles about the spiritual life, the daily Mass readings and a brief meditation on the readings. Patricia and I have been using this wonderful resource for many years and we encourage you to give it a try. Consider this an easy and enjoyable part of your spiritual discipline as you strive to enter the narrow gate. WAYNE COUNTY FAIR: Our parish's day to man the booth at the Wayne County Fair is Wed. Sept. 11. If you would like to help or are just interested in information about the booth, please call me at 440328-6579. I will be putting out a sign-up sheet for those who would like to man the booth, so even if you have told me in the past that you would like to help, please take the time to sign-up and let me know what time of day you could help. If you would like to donate to this good work of spreading the gospel, please make your check out to St. Anne Parish in Rittman and we will pass it on to Sr. Joan. Thank you, Dcn. Pete Meals & More Volunteer this week: Nick & Karen Thomas. Labor Day Weekend Bake Sale!!! To help you cope with the famous end of the summer weekend, the Ladies Guild will be having their traditional Bake Sale Fund Raiser! This will be an especially important fund raiser due to the number of valid scholarship applications weve received and there is no longer a Holy Name Raffle to help share this most worthy expense. If you can help us out in this effort, please bring your baked goods in before each Mass on August 31 and September 1. Attention Teens: All youths, grades 7-12 are invited to join us Saturday, September 7th from 6-8 pm to play volleyball and have a campfire here at St. Stephen's. Call 440-533-5943 - or - WWME.org What is Catholic teaching on labor and capitalism? Catholic teaching on Labor developed in the 19th century with the industrial revolution. Owners of industry primarily profited, while laborers sank into poverty. The Churchs view on capitalism concerns the common good and the system should not become a mere means for individuals to make profits. The Church supports a free-market system which is at the service of man, prevents monopolies, and ensures that all are supplied with employment and vitally necessary goods. Come to the Jesuit Retreat House for this Mens Evening Retreat. Facilitated by Fr. Marty Connell, SJ, this retreat will play off the stereotype of the refusal of men to ask for directions when they are lost. The retreat will be from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Cost is $15. Refreshments provided. To register contact Jesuit Retreat House 440-884-9300 or www.jrh-cleveland.org
