Application The 7UM511 is a numerical generator protection relay offering a practical com bination of protection functions for gener ators. The device provides all the neces sary protection functions for small generators of the type used in emer gency diesel generating sets or private power plants. The unit also serves as a basic module for more comprehensive protection systems based on the 7UM51 series for large generators. The 7UM51 protection system is supplemented by the 7UT51 differential protection units. The protective functions integrated in the device allow use of the 7UM511 as sys tem disconnector. Design The compact device contains all compo nents required for: D Measuredvalue acquisition and evalu ation D Operation and display D Indication and command output D Acquisition of binary signals D Serial data transfer D Auxiliary power supply. The device can be supplied with housings for flush or surface mounting. The ver sion for control panel mounting or cubicle mounting is supplied with connection ter minals at the rear of the device and is available with or without a glass cover. The version for control panel mounting is equipped with 100 screw terminals ac cessible from the front.
Functions The following protection functions are implemented: D Overcurrenttime protection (with un dervoltage sealin) D Singlephase overcurrent protection (can be implemented as rotor earth fault protection) D Stator overload protection D Underexcitation protection D Overvoltage protection D Undervoltage protection D Overfrequency protection D Underfrequency protection D Reverse power protection D Forward power monitoring D Unbalanced-load protection D Stator earthfault protection V0> D Direct injection (for separate protec tion equipment) D Trip circuit monitoring.
Measurement method The influence of harmonics, highfre quency transients, transient direct cur rent components and differing CT satura tion levels are suppressed to a large degree by the use of powerful micropro cessors and complete digital signal pro cessing (measuredvalue acquisition, measuredvalue conditioning and mea suredvalue processing). Availability and precise measurement even with varying frequencies are as sured by automatic followup of the sam pling frequency for the range 10 to 68 Hz. Several of the integrated protection func tions make use of variables that are avail able in the form of symmetrical compo nents. A change in the phase sequence, as is used in reversal in pumpedstorage power plants, must be communicated to the 7UM511 protection device to ensure that the symmetrical components are correctly formed. A binary signal input can be assigned this switchover function.

Singlephase overcurrenttime protec tion (ANSI 51N or ANSI 64R) This singlephase overcurrent protection can be implemented as a stator earth fault protection. This function detects the earthfault current limited by an imped ance. This protection system is so sensitive that it can also be used as a rotor earth fault protection with the relevant acces sories. A measuringcircuit monitoring function is available for this application.
Stator overload protection (ANSI 49) The task of the overload protection is to protect the stator windings from high, continuous overload currents. All load cycles are evaluated by the mathematical model used. The thermal effect of the effective current value forms the basis of the calculation. The ambient temperature or the temperature of the coolant can be injected as a proportional voltage to achieve adaptation to the prevailing conditions; otherwise a constant ambient temperature is assumed. By monitoring the minimum voltage, a wire break at the input for the temperature injection is de tected. If this input is suitably connected, 4 mA to 20 mA transducers can also be used for temperature acquisition.

Forward power monitoring (ANSI 32) Monitoring of the power produced by a generator can be useful for starting up and shutting down generators. One stage monitors violation beyond one limit value while another stage monitors violation below another limit value. The power is calculated using the positivesequence component of current and voltage. Unbalanced-load protection (ANSI 46) Asymmetrical current loads in the three phases of a generator cause a tempera ture rise in the rotor because of the re verse field produced. This protection detects an asymmetrical load in threephase machines. It func tions on the basis of symmetrical compo nents and evaluates the negative phase sequence system of the phase currents. The thermal processes are represented in a mathematical model. Warning and trig gering stages that can be set separately compare the calculated overtemperature against relevant threshold values. In addi tion, the load unbalance is evaluated by an independent stage which is supple mented by a timedelay element. Stator earthfault protection (ANSI 64) Earth faults manifest themselves in gen erators that are operated in isolation by the occurrence of a displacement voltage in the generator neutral point which is equivalent to a zerophase sequence sys tem in the phasetoearth voltage. The 7UM511 protection relay calculates the zerophase system of the phaseto earth voltage and compares the resulting displacement voltage with a settable limiting value. This provides earthfault protection for up to 95% of the stator winding.
Direct injection Direct injection of the 7UM511 protection relay is a function used for the acquisition of digital information. This digital informa tion is entered in the fault indication memory. They can influence the LEDs alarm relay" and command relay". Each direct injection" can delay the ef fect of the digital information with an in dividual timer. The function direct injec tion" is used to process information from the Buchholz protection or machine com mands. Trip circuit monitoring The 7UM511 protection relay can monitor two trip circuits (circuitbreaker coils in cluding supply conductor) for correct functioning. If a fault is detected in the monitored circuits the protection relay outputs an indication. Status measurements The values acquired and calculated by the device such as primary and secondary conductor current and voltage, earth cur rent, neutral voltage, positivesequence components of active and reactive power, frequency, active power, reactive power, power factor, currentvoltage angle, rotor displacement angle, exciter voltage, calculated conductorrelated overtemperature, coolant temperature, negative phasesequence components of the phase currents, overtemperature re sulting from load unbalance and the direction of rotating field can be displayed on the LC display or on a PC.
