Typical issues prior to CBM program

Bearing failures and lubrication issues Unplanned stop Reliability issues on the vessels

October 30, 2007 SKF Group Slide 8

What happened? Why Tide started to use CBM

October 30, 2007 SKF Group Slide 9

Catastrophic bearing failure

Generator bearing failed on a car ferry in 2008 Could this failure have been picked up? Most probably! Solution was to implement a vibration analysis program on generators and thruster electric motors

Implemented offline monitoring system with permanently mounted measurement studs 1 SKF engineer boards the vessels covered by the contract monthly/quarterly Trending, analysis and reporting done by SKF

October 30, 2007 SKF Group Slide 10

Progression of monitoring system

Program rapidly expanded to include : Entire diesel/gas generator train Thruster el. Motor, shaft support bearings and gear Scope increased by 5 vessels Today SKF monitors 9 ferries country wide 1 new ferry is planned to be added to the scope in 2011 Plans to include all vessels with thruster systems to be classed on condition

Scope of work today

SKF engineer boards monthly/quarterly Discuss activities/issues taken place on board, takes readings, ensures quality of measurement points and data, trend data, analysis and reporting to Tide Maintenance of software, hardware and database Regular meetings to review issues and progress

Scope of work in future

Ultimate goal is to class all thrusters on condition throughout the fleet Review lubricants used, lubrication methods and routines

Success stories

October 30, 2007 SKF Group Slide 16

Some problems picked up

Loosening holding bolts Incorrect lubrication types Incorrect lubrication methods Incorrect lubrication intervals Dry bearings Bearing defect on DE on el motor, warranty issue Bearing defect on shaft support bearing Overfilled oil reservoir in top thruster gear box

October 30, 2007 SKF Group Slide 17

Thruster DE gear box broken tooth

Broken tooth identified during leak repair of gear box SKF took readings for test purposes Readings taken before and after gear repair

October 30, 2007 SKF Group Slide 18

Generator 1
Sudden increase in velocity readings Analysis showed dominant 3x component Recommendation to tighten hold down bolts

Generator before and after tightening

October 30, 2007 SKF Group Slide 19

Before and after lubrication Envelope readings

Bearing analysis indicating dry bearing New bearing reading indicating correctly lubricated bearing

October 30, 2007 SKF Group Slide 20

Detecting bearing defects Generator

Analysis shows clear outer ring defect

Recommendation to lubricate bearing and monitor closely for deterioration

October 30, 2007 SKF Group Slide 21

Bearing housing env

Increasing trend Analysis indicates high noise carpet level and loose bearing Lubrication done by hand Recommendation = change bearing and housing and fit lubrication nipple and dump valve

Estimated value added

According to technical director at Tide Sj, since the introduction of SKF system:

Fewer breakdowns Saved the cost of one expensive electrical motor Avoided long term offhire and hire of replacement vessel
Total estimated savings:

20 000 annually pr ship with 2 thrusters An additional 100 000 saved from fewer engine breakdowns and repair costs

So remember...
A correctly setup CBM system, with correct hardware, software and know how, offers the potential of large savings Increase vessel reliability and onhire SKF can supply turn key solutions with hardware, software and services to create a concept to suite your needs SKF is a world wide company with local presence SKF is a world leader in increasing reliability of machinery by offering its knowledge to customers
