Title: Source/ Author: Product: MasterTrend Technology: MasterTrend Classification: Importing CSI MasterTrend Data into ME'scope for Structural ODS Animation Kevin Steele

Importing CSI MasterTrend data into ME'scope for structural ODS animation Getting Started: (note: The MasterTrend 32bit ODBC drivers must be installed on your PC before ME'scope can read a MasterTrend database. These drivers are available from CSI on a diskette labeled "32-Bit ODBC Driver". They are also posted on the CSI web site.) -After installing ME'scope software, create a CSI projects subdirectory under the ME'scope directory (something like "CSIprojs"). -Copy CSI's ME'scope Template files (.prj, .str, .& shp extensions) from the CSI "ME'scope Templates" diskette into this subdirectory. -Copy the MasterTrend ODS template database (.dat extension) to your MTWin directory or to a MasterTrend data directory that you create. Rename the database to a filename of your choice and use it as is, or use MasterTrend to copy the template machines into one of your own existing databases. -Start ME'scopeSHAPE. If the "Projects" window does not automatically open to your CSI projects subdirectory, click on the File menu and select "Change Directory". Select your CSI projects subdirectory, then select one of the project files (.prj), then click OK. This brings you back to the "Projects" window and you can select any of the CSI project files by double clicking the desired icon. -In addition to the main ME'scopeSHAPE window, the project should open three additional windows: A Project window (.prj) that lists the files within the project, a Structure window (.str) which contains the model drawing, and a Shape window (.shp) that contains, or will contain, the peak/phase data for animating the structure. In some cases a raw data block (.blk) window may also be part of a project. Print out a structural diagram with point labels to follow while collecting data: -From the Structure window, click once or twice on the small "3D" button (in the upper left corner of the screen) until the 3D image is displayed full screen. Click on the "Display" menu and select "Point Labels". Rotate the display using the arrow buttons on the button bar until you get a clear view of all points. Then click on the "File" menu and select "Print" "Structure". (Note: you may have to make more than one printout at different angles to get a clear perspective of all point locations)

Collect vibration data: -Collect Peak/Phase data using a CSI analyzer with one of the predefined ODS template routes in the MasterTrend ODS template database. Carefully follow the structural diagram's point layout and axis orientation. -The ME'scope structural diagram is labeled with an X,Y,Z coordinate system with arrows indicating which way the sensor should point. If data is collected with the sensor pointed 180 degrees in the opposite direction from these arrows, a minus sign must be inserted in front of the point label which will cause the software to invert the phase of the measurement (The minus signs have already been inserted for several points in the templates. The format is described later in this note.) -The structural model templates have also been configured to accept data in the machine coordinate system of A,H,V (Axial, Horizontal, Vertical) which correspond to X,Y,Z. -After collecting data, dump the Route back into the MasterTrend database. Import MasterTrend data into ME'scope: -From the main ME'scopeSHAPE window, click the File menu and select "Import CSI Data" (Note: this option will only be available on ME'scope systems that have been installed with the CSI data translator, "CSITran.exe") A window will pop up allowing you to enter the full path and file name for a MasterTrend database. Type in the path and filename for your MasterTrend ODS template database and click OK The CSI Master Trend Translator window will open (this is the point where the MasterTrend ODBC drivers are required), and allow you to select a Station, then a Machine directly from the MasterTrend database. Multiple machines can be selected, if necessary, to allow more than the 48 measurement points available per machine. Enter a date/time range that will extract the desired data from the MasterTrend database. -A window will pop up asking you to give a filename, with the .shp extension, for storing the imported peak/phase "Shape" data. If the same file exists from a previous animation, you may want to overwrite the original file, or rename to something new. Then click "Save". The "Shape" window (.SHP), will now contain the imported peak/phase data displayed as "frequency & damping". -From the Shape window, you can click on the Display menu and select "Shapes" to view the actual peak/phase values. The "Label" column contains the Measurement Point Descriptions imported from MasterTrend. The "DOF" column is also imported from MasterTrend (from one of two places described below depending on how you define your measurement points). The "Magnitude & Phase" columns contain peak/phase data for each order of running speed collected. Assign the peak/phase or "Shape" data to points on the Structure model: -Each of the DOF peak/phase values in the Shape table could be assigned manually to points on the structure model. However, by following one of two conventions when naming the Measurement Point ID's in MasterTrend, the process becomes automated. 1) The DOF labels can be defined in the Measurement Point ID. The first two characters of the ID should be numerical (1-99), corresponding to a point on the structure model. The third character of the ID should be H, V, or A to designate the orientation of the sensor in "Machine coordinates". This method does not allow a minus sign to be inserted because all three ID characters have already been used.

(The minus signs could still be added after the data has been transferred into ME'scope). 2) The DOF labels can also be defined in the Measurement Point Description field. This allows much more room and a minus sign can be added in front of the label. The first three characters of the Description field must be DOF follow by square brackets [ ]. The DOF labels as described above should be enclosed within the brackets. (Example: DOF[-01H] See the template database for other examples)

-If the DOF's have been defined properly in MasterTrend to match the points on the structure, you can automatically assign the Shape data. From the Shape window, click on the "Tools" menu and select "Assign Shapes". A pop up reminder tells you the DOF's must match the structure point labels, click "Yes" to proceed. If shape data has previously been assigned, another pop up window will warn you that you are about to overwrite the previous data, click "Yes" to proceed. The next pop up window should tell you that all DOF's were assigned, if not, some problem with configuration may need to be addressed. Animate: -To animate the model, switch back to the Structure window and click the "Animate" button. Many features are available to enhance the animated display and are described in the ME'scope operating manual. Note on AVI files (Digital Movies) -ME'scope allows creation of a digital movie (or .AVI file) showing the structural animation. This file can be saved to a floppy disk and used as a reporting tool. -Double clicking on an AVI file from the Windows Explorer will play the animation once and then stop. By instead running the AVI file with the Mplayer program you can get better control of the playback. -One way to do this is to hold down the shift key while right clicking on the AVI file. Then choose "Open With" and select Mplayer from the list of choices. To perform additional modifications to CSI's ME'scope model templates: -Switch to the Draw Structure window (.STR). You may want to maximize the Structure window in order to see both the structure diagrams and the point configuration table at the same time. -Notice the item in the menu bar that defaults to "Substructure", click on this setting and change it to "Points". This will list the point configuration table for the structure. You can use the X,Y,Z columns to modify the coordinates of points on the structure if needed. -The "Label" column is used to assign labels to the points on the structure diagram. This is also the column used to automate the assignment of Shape data. Use the same point ID numbers in the Label column of the Structure table that you use in the DOF column in the Shape table (note: the ID's in the DOF column will be extracted directly from MasterTrend). Also, use the Machine

coordinate system of A,H,V. Then when the shape data is transferred from the Shape table to the Structure table it automatically goes to the correct point in the correct orientation. (Note: you can display the labels on the structure diagram by clicking on the "Display" menu, and selecting "Point Labels".) -The "Machine" coordinate system (H,V,A) is selected by first highlighting all points on the structure (easy way to do this is to double click the title of the "Select" column). Then click the "Point Motions" button in the menu bar, then click the "Local Axes" button, then select "Machine Coordinates", then click both of the "Close" buttons to exit back out.
