Materials: Yarn - type and amount main color (MC) and contrasting
color (CC) needed for finished
size; button needed for finishes size; tapestry needle; hook needed to
obtain gauge.
Finished size: Infant's 0-3 mos.; 1 1/2oz MC and 13yds CC baby yarn,
1/2" button. Gauge G hook,
9 sc = 2"; 5 sc rows = 1". F hook, 5 ribbing sts = 1" 6 ribbing rows =
1".
Finished size: Infant 6-9 mos.; 3oz. MC and 17 1/2 yds CC worsted
weight yarn, 3/4" button.
Gauge H hook, 7sc = 2", 4 sc rows = 1". G hook, 4 ribbing sts = 1"; 5
ribbing rows = 1".
Finished size: Infant 9-12 mos.; 3oz. MC and 22 yds CC worsted weight
yarn, 3/4" button. Gauge I
hook, 3sc = 1", 7 sc rows = 2". H hook, 7 ribbing sts = 2"; 9 ribbing
rows = 2".
Basic hat:
Ribbing
Row 1: With smaller hook and MC, ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in
each ch across, turn (7).
Rows 2-71: Working these rows in back loops, ch1, sc in each st
across, turn. At end of last
row, do not turn.
Working around outer edge in the ends of the rows, sts and on the
opposite edge of starting ch,
sc in the first row (skip next row, sc in next row) across; for
buttonhole, ch 4; sc in each ch
across to last ch, 2 sc in last ch; with larger hook, 2 sc in next row, (sc
in next row, 2 sc in
next row) across; working in back loops, sc in each st across, do not
join or fasten off (158).
Hat
Row 1: Working this row in back loops, sl st in first 4 sts, ch 1, sc in
next 30 sts, sl st in
each of next 2 sts leaving last st unworked, turn (30).
Row 2: Ch 1, skip each of first 2 sl sts, sc in next 10 sts, (2 sc in next
st, sc in next st) 5
times, sc in each st across, turn (35).
Row 3: Ch 1, sc the first 2 sts tog, sc in each st across to the last 2 sts,
sc last 2 sts tog,
turn (33).
Row 4: Ch 1, sc first 2 sts tog, sc in next 10 sts, (2 sc in next st, sc in
next st) 5 times, sc
in each st across to the last 2 sts, sc last 2 sts tog, turn (36).
Row 5: Repeat row 3 (34).
Rows 6 - 17: Ch 1, sc in each across, turn.
Row 18: Ch 1, sc first 2 sts tog, sc in next 10 sts, (sc next 2 sts tog,sc
in each of next 3
sts) 3 times, sc in next 7 sts, 2 sc in last st, turn (33).
Row 19: Repeat row 6.
Row 20: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 11 sts, (sc next 2 sts tog,sc in

Row 21: Repeat row 6.
Row 22: Ch 1, ( sc in each of next 3 sts, sc next 2 sts tog) 6 times, sc

Row 23: Ch 1, sc in each of first 2 sts, (sc next 2 sts tog, sc in each of
next 2 sts) across,
turn (20).
Row 24: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each of next 2 sts, (sc next 2 sts

2 sts) 4 times, 2 sc in last st, turn (18).
Row 25: Ch 1, sc in first 7 sts, (sc next 2 sts tog) 2 times, sc in last 7
sts, turn (16).
Row 26: Ch 1, sc in first 6 sts, (sc next 2 sts tog) 2 times, sc in last 6
sts, turn (14).
Leaving 8" tail for sewing, fasten off.
Fold row 26 in half; matching sts, sew tog.
Trim
Row 1: With smaller hook, working in ends of rows across hat, with
right side facing, join MC
with a sl st in row 1, sc in each across to opposite end of row 2, sl st in
next row. Fasten
off.
Row 2: Working this row in back loops, join CC with a sl st in the first
sl st, sc in each
across to the last st, sl st in the last sl st, fasten off.
Sew button to row 69 of ribbing opposite buttonhole.
Inner ear
Row 1: With smaller hook and CC, ch 10, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc
in each ch across, turn
(10).
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across to the last st, 2 sc in the last st, turn
(11).
Row 3: Ch1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each st across, turn (12).
Row 4: Repeat row 2 (13).
Row 5: Ch 1, sc first 2 sts tog, sc in each ch across, turn (12).
Row 6: Ch 1, sc in each st across to the last 2 sts, sc the last 2 sts tog,
turn (11)
Rows 7-8: Repeat rows 5 and 6. At end of last row, (9), fasten off.
Hold ear pieces tog with inner ear facing you; working through both
thicknesses across 3 sides,
with smaller hook, join MC with sc in first st, sc in each st and row
across outer edgeto last
st, gathering outer ear piece to match inner ear piece. Leaving 10" for
sewing, fasten off.
Sew 1 ear to each side at top of the head with 8 rows in between.
