CosBatch Ver 2.

Information

COSbatch is a network based batch job scheduling application. It is designed to simplify the
complex task of configuring and running a series of inter-related or individual jobs that make up
an organization’s daily batch processing loads, to distribute these jobs around the network easily
and to make the specification of job submission times straightforward.
Following are COSbatch's main features

• Network Based
COSbatch has been designed to for setting up a network-wide batch job schedule.
Jobs can be defined, submitted and controlled from a central point or from anywhere within
the COSbatch domain for execution on any of the nodes within the domain.

• Powerful and flexible Calendar Facilities

The calendar facilities within COSbatch make it easy to schedule a job at precise times.
COSbatch calendars enable a complex and specific scheduling sequence to be easily
defined and then stored under a meaningful name e.g. MONDAY-NIGHT, PUBLIC-HOLIDAYS
etc. These calendars can then be associated with any job in an inclusive or exclusive manner.
For example, to run a job every Monday evening except for public holidays, it is only
necessary to define a job which includes the MONDAY-NIGHT calendar and excludes the
PUBLIC-HOLIDAYS calendar (using the names above).

• Queues
Jobs are placed on a selectable queue where they remain until they are eligible for execution.
The queuing model within COSbatch is designed to simplify the assignment of characteristics
to any given job within the batch system.
Once appropriate default job characteristics have been set for each queue, a user simply
submits a job to the chosen queue and it automatically picks up the characteristics associated
with that queue.
The queuing model is also designed to allow simple separation of different areas of business
processing allowing ease of monitoring or management of those sections, e.g.
Housekeeping, Finance, Warehouse, Payroll etc

• Jobs and Suites

Jobs can be submitted to COSbatch either individually or as members of a logical collection
of jobs known as a suite. When a job is submitted as an individual job, COSbatch executes it
with its associated characteristics derived from the queue, and according to its schedule,
calendar or run frequency.
When jobs are entered as part of a suite, they take on the schedule of the suite and the
characteristics of the queue they are placed on. The execution of the jobs within a suite can
be controlled by the success or failure of other jobs within the same, or different, suites or on
the output generated by those jobs.

• Preconditions (or dependencies)

The order in which jobs execute within a suite is controlled using a precondition language.
This language allows you to construct full expressions to decide whether a job is to be
executed or not. For example, the expression
(J2=0 & J5!=2) | J21 ~ "SUCCESS"
would allow a job to run only if Job 2 completes with an exit status of 0 AND Job 5 completes
with an exit status not equal to 2, OR if Job 21 has the string "SUCCESS" within its standard
output stream.

• Interface of your choice

As with all applications within the COSMOS suite of systems management products,
COSbatch provides a complete range of user interfaces. It can be used in GUI (Graphical
User Interface) mode, be it X/Motif or native Windows NT/9x; it can be used in full screen
character (curses) mode from standard character terminals or terminal emulation products; or
it can be used via its Command Line Interface (CLI).
This allows the COSbatch interface to be used from desktop PCs and UNIX workstations
down to legacy green screen character terminals, and all the functionality to be accessible
from within other applications.

• Load Control
All jobs are submitted to run through logical Processors defined within COSbatch. These
processors have a number of characteristics to assist in reducing the use of system
resources. The maximum number of executing jobs allowed per processor can be defined
and this gives a simple means of load control on valuable CPU resources.
Processors can also be defined as being attached to a specific node in the COSbatch domain
thereby enabling jobs to be run on different nodes across the network.

• Built-in Security
COSbatch has security features which enable administrators to restrict user access to
COSbatch functions where appropriate.
Security and access control are based on the concepts of assignable capabilities and classes
of user. Capabilities can be specified for users, classes of user, job suites, queues and
processors, allowing security to be applied very specifically.
Users are grouped into classes to make security administration easy.

• Extensive job control

Jobs may be released, held, paused, changed, removed or even forced to execute
immediately. This allows operations staff to react quickly to a changing environment.
Production staff can view the status of jobs, including estimated time to completion.
