Structure sealing, sealing against ground moisture Concrete, reinforced concrete and preset concrete structures Dimensioning and construction of reinforced concrete and preset concrete trusses Protection of structures with coating systems against attack by chemicals Technical rules for water polluting materials when sealing surfaces Pull-off test for determining bonding strength Deutscher Ausschuss fr Stahlbeton [German Committee for Reinforced Concrete] Directive for the protection and repair of concrete components
The following requirements for the manufacture of concrete in dependence on temperature and material loads arise from the above-mentioned standards and regulations: Concrete components must have tensile bonding strength of at least 1,5 N/mm. The compressive strength of the concrete should be at least 25 N/mm. The concrete curing time should be at least 28 days. Concrete class: B1 The base shall correspond to DIN 14879-1, i.e. crack widths of 0.15 to 0.2 mm are permissible. The penetration of ground water or moisture into the outer surface of the concrete components placed in the ground (with the inner surfaces to be coated) is to be avoided by sealing the concrete. The penetration of water under the coating must be avoided. If groundwater or seepage water or water from other sources can penetrate the structure from the back this is to be sealed accordingly (drainage systems, injections, etc.). After coating is carried out the residual moisture in the base should have a maximum value of 5%. The structure is to be protected against the effects of weather and moisture.

2.1.4 Flaws in the concrete surface, large areas of erosion, breaks, shrinkage cavities and unevennesses are to be primed and levelled off using suitable artificial cement. A level base should be created. All corners are to be finished off with a cornice, radius of 6 to 12 mm. Levelling off and filling in scratches may be necessary. 2.1.5 In the case of cracks in concrete the type of crack and its cause must first of all be determined, and it may be necessary to review the strength of the overall structure. In general cracks which do not extend over the whole cross-section of the component can be repaired. First of all the cracks are enlarged by means of a V-shaped cut and then cleaned. In the case of static cracks the cracks will be filled using a rigid sealing compound (friction-type connection). In the case of dynamic cracks a plastic sealing compound is used.

Dynamic joints like joints between components or expansion joints must be closed in a way to allow for movement. This requires joint dimensions in accordance with the directives valid for concrete repairs. Coatings for dynamic joints must as a rule be kept mechanically separated from each other. This can be ensured by masking the area of the joint with adhesive tape to prevent any sticking above the joint. Caution: The expansion specified in the technical product information refers to the free film of the coating.
At higher values of residual moisture (up to 60%) special measures are to be taken for preparing the base. To reduce the residual moisture of wet/damp mineral surfaces a special crystallisation system based on lithium-water-glass is applied that forms a barrier against moisture. Depending on the value of residual moisture a reduction of the moisture to a normal value of 5 to 10% can be achieved by repeated applications. Satisfactory ventilation and radiant heaters aid the drying process. Measurements of the residual moisture can be made with the help of the moisture measurement apparatus "Betonfeuchtemesser" [Concrete moisture measuring device], e.g. from Messrs. LAU, in various debts of measurement, 10 mm to 40 mm, and depending on the density of the material. 2.4.2 Priming Our recommendation is to apply a primer to the surfaces to be coated. Priming takes place on surfaces with a maximum residual moisture content of 10%. By means of several applications a sealed surface with a moisture barrier against reverse water vapour pressure is formed. By means of a primer, unevennesses are levelled out and the bonding properties improved. By means of several applications a surface is produced in which the pores are closed.

QuickPrime 1K & 2K primer
To create a moisture barrier (after consultation with VIP's application support) against reverse water vapour and/or water exerting pressure it is necessary to mix the primer with the appropriate filler (reinforcing pigments - around 5 to 15 % by weight of filler with respect to a mixture of resin and the hardening agent) and hence create a barrier of 0.5 to 1.0 mm.

Polyurea consumption
approx. 1.2kg/1m/1 mm
Free film trials should be made for setting the specified dry film thickness which would be measured by the layer thickness meter, and the number of coats required for this should be recorded. Because of the chemical structure of aromatic Polyureas a slight discolouration of the base coat system caused by sunlight must be expected. Dark colours are faster than light colours. Applying aliphatic Polyurea as the top coat guarantees colour fastness of the various colours. Product recommendation: Polyaspartic Top coat

3.4 Equipment
Processing QuickSpray POLYUREA Hot Spray is only possible using a hot spray process. For this process it is necessary to have two-component high-pressure spray equipment with a working pressure of at least 130 bar (as advised by VIP's application support) which can be heated. Manufacturers of this equipment are Graco, Gama, WIWA, TecMac, Isotherm, etc. For sites with large areas, bonding material for up to 800m/day can be applied with this equipment. The material will be heated by separate heating elements to up to approximately 80 C process temperature in order to achieve optimum cross-linking. Use heating sleeves as required. The material will be transported to the spray gun and the pre-set temperature will be kept constant in heatable hoses. The two components are mixed in the spray gun's mixer head. In general, pressures, temperatures, heating hose lengths, spray guns and jet sizes must be adapted to each other. Care must be taken that the power input is adequately earthed. Washing out the hoses should be carried out with appropriate materials, e.g. organic plasticisers like MESAMOLL. The hoses should be cleaned at the end of each working day and certainly at the latest at the completion of the project. For cleaning the metal parts of the spray gun, cleaning agents and solvents are to be used which have very good properties for dissolving and/or removing impurities, e.g. DMF (dimethyl-formamide or other PU cleaning agents).
N.B. Low-pressure aggregates (up to 120bar) is not suitable for this purpose as the optimum properties of the product would not be realised (!).

For bigger areas respectively for the overcoating of an old polyurea coating, action shall be taken as described in the following: The complete area has to be mechanically treated by abrasive blasting or high pressure water jetting The pre-treated and prepared surfaces have to be cleaned by using an industrial vacuum cleaner in order to remove any loose dust from the grinding, dust or separating agents. Afterwards the primer needs to be applied onto a properly prepared surface respectively base in order to achieve a chemical activation of the surface and furthermore to generate a bonding bridge to the following coating layer. The primer respectively the activator should be applied in a thin layer preferably (application by roller); an application by airless spray equipment is also possible. After the primer respectively the activator is tack-free (back of the finger-test !), the coating can be applied onto the complete area.

4.2. Transport
Polyurea can be transported by commercial vehicles. Isocyanates (A side), are not regulated. Amines (B side), are to be declared according to ADR [European regulations for the transport of hazardous materials] as hazardous materials. Details of this can be found in the current safety sheet.
4.3. Storage
QuickSpray is capable of storage in the original closed drum for approximately 12 months from the time of its manufacture. Direct sunlight and frost are to be avoided. The goods are to be stored in dry conditions and at room temperatures (18 to 23 C). Storage at room temperatures ensures that the product has a consistency which can be easily worked with. Place the drums on pallets and not directly on the ground. For longer periods of storage the drums are to be rotated from time to time. Because of reaction with moist air and/or water an increase in pressure can occur in the drums which contain isocyanate through the formation of carbon dioxide. The product must be protected from contact with water and moisture in the air (use drying agents or nitrogen). Each time material is removed the drums must be closed tightly.
4.4. Disposal
It is imperative that the components do not enter sewers, waterways or soil. All cleaning agent and coating material residues must be disposed of in a proper manner. Hardened material can be disposed of as normal waste. The liquid individual components are to be disposed of pursuant to the instructions for disposal in the current data safety sheet.
