Abstract Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) have emerged as an efficient and effective way of alleviating the traffic congestion and improving the performance of transportation systems. Key challenges of ITS in recent years include the pervasive data collection, data security, privacy preserving, large volume data processing, and intelligent analytics. These challenges lead to a revolution in ITS development by leveraging the crowdsourcing scheme and cloud computing architecture. In this paper, we propose a user-driven Cloud Transportation system (CTS) which employs a scheme of user-driven crowdsourcing to collect user data for traffic model construction and congestion prediction including data collection, filtering, modeling, intelligent computation and publish. We describe in details the application scenario, system architecture, and core CTS services model. To verify the feasibility of our approach, we have developed a prototype system which elaborated the cloud architecture and other implementation details. This paper aims to inspire further research of user-driven CTS on intelligent data processing model for smarter utilization of transportation infrastructure. INTRODUCTION

Traffic congestion is a major problem worldwide affecting millions of peoples daily activities. IBM conducted a survey in twenty major cities around the world, in which most of respondents reported increased stress from traffic congestion in the last three years [1]. Congestion can also lead to fuel consumption, air pollution and even the risk of disease [2]. Besides constructing new roads and implementing new transportation policies, optimizing existing transportation systems by analyzing data collected from large amount of auxiliary instruments, e.g., cameras, GPS receivers and microwave detectors, can be a feasible strategy to solve the aforementioned problems. Intelligent transportation system (ITS) has emerged as an effective way to improving the performance of transportation systems, aiming to relieve the congestion and maximize total social benefit [3]. Although ITS have been widely studied, it still facing various challenges: x Many of the proposed ITS systems focused on surveillance of the roadways. The high cost and low mobility of monitoring equipment limit the deployment scale and density. Data from auxiliary instruments such

as traffic detectors also cannot meet the requirements of more complex and accurate calculation and prediction. x Pervasive data from transportation has not been collected. The vehicles, as the main component of traffic flow, need to be monitored for their position, direction, velocity and even destination. More comprehensive collection of information will facilitate intelligent analytics. x Large-scale of user leads to the requirements of enormous computing and storage resources. Furthermore, we need to apply the more intelligent prediction model and approach to make full use of pervasive traffic data. x Security and privacy concern. Since a lot of personal information is revealed, vehicle positions, trip destinations, or driving style can be derived from that. Proper information protection and privacy preserving is mandatory for the thriving of ITS. In response to these challenges, several trends of technology have been explored as promising solutions: x User-driven Scheme: User-driven is a crowd sourcing process that involves outsourcing tasks to a distributed group of agent [4][5]. In ITS, pervasive data can be collected by user-driven architecture for traffic model construction and prediction. x Context-aware Publish/Subscribe Mechanism: Publish/ Subscribe user information collection mechanism based on SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture) generally provides a way for user information collection by perfectly connect the mobile platform, center cloud processing system and background management system [6]. x Cloud Computing infrastructure: Cloud computing is the delivery of computing and storage capacity as a service to a community of end-recipients [7]. With the help of cloud computing platform, big data processing and complicated intelligent analyses can be supported elastically. ITU-T anticipates the Cloud Computing a next revolutionary technology and has formed a focus group on various cloud computing researches [8]. Leveraging these trends can be helpful to solve the challenges faced by ITS. Some works have been done to applying cloud computing concepts and frameworks focusing on the policy or the general framework. There is lack of details on system design and implementation. Our contribution includes three major parts. First, we propose a user-driven Cloud Transportation System (CTS) which employs a scheme of user-driven crowdsourcing to collect
