Inside Today...
Fall On The Road
September 11, 2001, is a day permanently etched in
history. 9-11 carries profound meaning for many people
and stands in infamy along with events like Pearl Harbor
and the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and
Martin Luther King, Jr.
The attacks on 9-11 resulted in a total of 2,996 fatalities.
Among those were the victims on the four planes,
civilians working in the towers and on the ground,
military personnel and civilians in the Pentagon, and
first-responders to the scenes.
Thousands of first responders and civilians entered the
affected buildings to search for or help people exit the
carnage. As of 2010, it is believed that more than 800 of
these responders have also died, some say from illnesses
related to their heroic efforts.
While the world is quick to focus on the extensive
damage and loss of life that ensued as a result of this
terrible day, it also is important to focus on the survivors
and those who risked their own lives to save people from
burning and collapsing buildings. There are a number of
ways to honor the legacy of these brave people.
* Initiate a scholarship fund in memory of a lost relative
or friend. Many businesses or even the place of
employment of the deceased may be willing to contribute
money to the effort. This way the individuals name will
live on and be associated with something positive for
years to come.
* Survivors can share their stories with school children or
others, imparting knowledge about the events as they
unfolded. This is a strong lesson in American history and
bravery.
* Make a donation to a charity that offers financial
support to those impacted by the events of 9-11. Be sure
to check out the charity to ensure that funds are
appropriated properly.
While September 11, 2011, will live in infamy as a
traumatic and horrific moment in American history,
people can focus on the positive aspect of the heroes and
find ways to honor their memories.

MARTINSBURG - Bill White has been
named Hospice of the Panhandles new
community and provider relations
manager. In this role, White will direct the
organizations efforts in working with the
medical community and other providers
of care. Hell also oversee community
outreach for Hospice.
We are very pleased to have someone
with Bills level of business and
management experience in this role, said
Hospice of the Panhandle CEO Margaret
Cogswell. We are confident in his
abilities to reach out to the medical
community and community at large. He
also is clearly someone who shares our
commitment to compassionate care.
White most recently served as the chief
financial officer at U.S. Silica in
Frederick,MD. He held that job for seven
years, during which time the company
went from private to public ownership.
He worked at U.S. Silica for 21 years.
Before that, he worked for Union Carbide
Corp. He is a certified public accountant.
He holds a bachelors degree in business
administration from Marshall University.
He is a member of St. Joseph Church,
serving on Parish Finance Council and is a
member of the St. Vincent DePaul
Society.
He and his wife, Nancy, the principal at
Spring Mills Middle School,have two
grown daughters. They have lived in
Martinsburg for the past 21 years.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The University
Healthcare City Hospital Foundation will
sponsor its tenth annual tennis classic on
Saturday, September 14 at Saint James
School in Saint James, MD. Organized by
a group of local physicians, the event was
established in 2004 as a fund raiser to
benefit City Hospital, now Berkeley
Medical Center.
The annual University Healthcare tennis
classic is under the direction of tennis pro
Ron Fassig. The tournament is a round
robin format with the highest scoring
doubles awarded. Trophies will be
awarded to the top two players in the
mens and womens divisions, along with
the player with the most aces. In order to
participate, registrants must be 18 years
old by September 1, 2013.
Registration begins at 8:00 am at the St.
James School tennis courts, with play to
begin at 9 am. The individual player entry
fee is $100. Corporate sponsorships are
also available at $1000, $500 and $250
levels. An awards ceremony with lunch,
provided by Sodexo, will immediately
follow the conclusion of play.

Commission in Medical Management
(CCMM) recently designated Lauren B.
Cianciaruso, DO, vice president of
medical affairs at University Healthcare
Jefferson Medical Center, a Certified
Physician Executive as endorsed by the
American College of Physician Executives.
The CCMM awarded Dr. Cianciaruso the
status of Certified Physician Executive for
educational achievements, demonstrated
stature as a physician, and experience in
the field of medical management. The
CPE designation indicates that a physician
has achieved superior levels of professional
excellence and management education,
while also demonstrating effective
knowledge and leadership skills.
Dr. Cianciaruso joined Jefferson Medical
Center in July 2012 as vice president of
medical affairs with over 20 years of
healthcare experience. She is board
certified in family medicine and has been
practicing since 2001. She also serves as
an assistant professor with the WVU
School of Medicine, and a staff physician
with University Healthcare Physicians.
We congratulate Dr. Cianciaruso on her
recent designation as a Certified Physician
Executive, stated Christina DeRosa, PhD,
chief administrative officer at Jefferson
Medical Center. This is clearly an honor
and we are proud to have her as a part of
our Executive Team and medical staff.
Dr. Cianciaruso holds a doctor of
osteopathic medicine from NOVA
Southeastern University in Fort
Lauderdale, FL, and completed her
residency in family medicine at
Georgetown University in Washington,
DC. She has practiced medicine in
Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
Prior to joining Jefferson Medical Center,
Dr. Cianciaruso served as the chief
medical officer at Healthworks of
Northern Virginia in Leesburg. Before
that, she practiced at Harpers Ferry Family
Medicine and was a member of the
Jefferson Medical Center medical staff.
She also served as an assistant professor
with the WVU School of Medicine and a
faculty member for the WVU Rural
Family Medicine Residency program.
Dr. Cianciaruso is a wonderful role
model of an accomplished front-line
physician stepping up to achieve the
training and expertise to become a leader
in our healthcare system, stated Konrad

BROWN-BUTTER
GREEN BEANS WITH PECANS

1 3/4 pounds fresh green beans
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 cup pecans
salt & pepper
Boil green beans in boiling water for about 8 minutes.
Drain and rinse with cold water.
Warm butter on medium heat until brown (3-5 minutes).
Add pecans and cook until toasted (2 minutes). Add
beans and season with salt and pepper.
You can also put the ingredients into a slow cooker and
cook for about 8 hours on low
Ingredients:
1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, undrained
1 (16 ounce) can pork and beans
1 (15 ounce) can butter beans, undrained
1/2 cup ketchup
2 teaspoons white vinegar
1 tablespoon dry mustard
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 pound lean ground beef
4 ounces bacon, chopped
1/2 cup chopped onion
salt to taste
ground black pepper to taste
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. In a large skillet over medium heat, fry the ground
beef, bacon and onion together until ground beef is no
longer pink. Drain fat.
3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the kidney beans,
baked beans with pork and butter beans. Stir in the
ketchup, white vinegar, dry mustard, brown sugar and
cook beef mixture. Mix thoroughly, adding salt and
pepper to taste.
4. Pour the bean and meat mixture into a 9x13 inch
baking dish. Bake in preheated oven for 30-40 minutes.

Put 4-6 Chicken Breasts in the bottom of the
crockpot, 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup soy
sauce over top. Cook on High for 5 hours, then
add broccoli and cook another hour. Serve over
white rice!

These gadgets make driving safer
Guys love gadgets. Be it the newest smartphone or the
latest model television, men revel in staying up-to-date
on the latest gadgets and gizmos to hit the market.
Such is the case with the following gadgets and
innovations, each of which makes the roadways safer
for drivers and their passengers.
Blind spot detectors: Blind spot detectors and
intervention systems use radar or image detectors on
side mirrors to determine if an object is in the cars
blind spots. Intervention systems are connected to the
braking system of the car. The systems pull the vehicle
back to safety should the driver attempt to change
lanes into potential danger.
Back-up cameras: In an era of monster-sized vans and
trucks, some drivers have difficulty gauging the length
of the vehicle with respect to items behind it. Also,
taller vehicles may have obstructed vision in the back
by the rear bumper, which can be a safety hazard
should a child or object be in the path of the auto.
The camera can provide an image of whats behind
the vehicle to better assess whether its safe to go in
reverse.
A beeping sound or other signal also may alert to a
potential obstruction.
Lane departure warning: This mechanism is designed
to warn a driver when a vehicle begins to move out of
its lane, unless a turn signal is activated to alert to the
lane change. These systems use a camera or another
tracking device to pick up on the visual lines on a
roadway, accommodating for turns. Some will signal
with an audible sound, visual notification or a
vibration of the steering wheel if the driver is veering
into another lane. Other systems will work in concert
with the steering to keep the car in its lane.
Night-vision technology: Individuals who do a good
portion of driving at night may want to consider
night-vision options on a vehicle. This is a system that
increases the drivers perception and seeing distance in
darkness or poor weather beyond the scope of
headlights. Many systems rely on the driver looking at
a screen that portrays a video image, which some
assert is a danger in itself because it takes ones eyes
off of the road.

Riding a bicycle is beneficial for many reasons. Not only
does riding a bicycle reduce the number of cars on the road,
but such an activity is also great exercise. However, when
riding bicycles, cyclists must keep in mind that the rules of
the road that apply to cars do also extend to bicycles.
In many areas of the country, bicycles are subject to the
same rules as other two- and four-wheeled vehicles. That
includes yielding to pedestrians and obeying signage. Other
rules include:
riding on the correct side with traffic;
when turning, always using the turning lane;
obeying traffic signs, lights and road markings; and
using correct hand signals.
Not every cyclist obeys the rules. In many major cities,
cyclists routinely ignore traffic lights while repeatedly failing
to make proper hand signals. Thats especially disconcerting
in cities like New York, where special bike lanes have
become the norm on some of the citys busiest streets.
Sharing the road safely remains a concern for motorists,
cyclists and pedestrians. If bicycle riders do their part to
obey the rules of the road, fewer altercations and accidents
may occur.

Driving a new vehicle off of the sales lot can be exciting. Brand-new
vehicles are supposed to be reliable and free from maintenance
concerns. However, sometimes manufacturers recall a vehicle, forcing
drivers to visit the auto body shop sooner than they had hoped.
According to the Auto Insurance Organization, 390 million vehicles
have been recalled since the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety
Act became law in 1966. Vehicles are recalled for a variety of reasons,
including poorly performing tires, faulty pieces of motor vehicle
equipment and unsafe child safety seats. From 2009 to 2010, Toyota
alone recalled 8.5 million cars, the single largest recall in history.
It can be disconcerting to learn that your vehicle is being recalled. The
uneasiness of driving a potentially dangerous vehicle coupled with the
prospect of being without a car can be daunting.
Vehicle manufacturers must notify consumers that a recall is in place.
But sometimes a vehicle owner may not be aware that there is a recall.
In the event of large recalls, like the recent ones involving Toyota and
Bridgestone Tires, the story makes the national news. But there are
other ways drivers can stay current on recall information to ensure their
personal safety.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an arm of the
U.S. Department of Transportation, is a source of information on
vehicle recalls. Their database dates back to 1966. The NHTSA
provides information on equipment recalls, entire vehicle recalls, child
safety seat recalls, and tire recalls. There also is information on school
bus recalls.
Individuals can visit www.Recalls.gov and select the categories they
want to check. To check recalls on a particular motor vehicle, select that
category, enter the make and model as well as the year, and the
information about any recalls will appear.
Recall information can help save lives and prevent injuries. It is
important to be aware of recalls to ensure the vehicle youre driving is
as safe as possible.
Information about vehicle recalls and necessary repairs can help
protect drivers from injury.

senior citizens behind the wheel in the United States.
According to the National Household Travel Survey,
members of Generation Y, who are between the ages of 16 to
34, are driving less. From 2001 to 2009, the average annual
number of vehicle miles traveled by Gen-Y-ers dropped by 23
percent. Some find the process to be a hassle, others are
frightened by the prospect of controlling a vehicle, and others
are merely taking a green approach to transportation,

flip side, researchers at the University of Michigan have
found that people age 70 and older make up the largest group

How to help teenagers
become better drivers
Traffic accidents are the leading
cause of death for teenagers in
the United States. The
National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration reports
that vehicular accidents
account for 35 percent of all
fatalities among people 15 to
20 years old.
What puts teens particularly at
risk is the tendency of many
young drivers to engage in
reckless behavior and/or
distracted driving. It is often
up to parents to reinforce the
rules of the road and also
consistently work with their
children so that the teens can
become better drivers.
Practice safer driving. As with
any activity, practice helps hone skills and teaches people through their own mistakes. Driving is
no exception. Mistakes on the road can be serious; therefore, it is best for teen drivers to practic e
driving in areas that are not heavily populated or full of traffic. Parents may want to establish
rules that the teen is not able to drive solo until he or she passes the requirements set forth by
Mom or Dad. Parents can routinely ride around with their teen children to gauge how progress is
coming along.
Get the facts. Talk to teens about road risks and how to stay safe. Research the laws and
statistics pertaining to teenage drivers and share that information. It may not always be well
received, but theres a good chance that some of the message will get through.
Set a good example. According to a 2007 study from Students Against Destructive Decisions,
the biggest influence on how teens drive is their parents. Almost two-thirds of high school teens
say their parents talk on a cell phone while driving, almost half say their parents speed and
almost one-third say their parents dont wear a safety belt. Parents should be mindful of their
own behaviors when driving and the impression those behaviors are making on youngsters.
Establish rules. Distracted driving is claiming more and more lives each year. Many accidents
are as the result of texting while driving. According to Distraction.org, in 2010, 3,092 people
were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver and an estimated additional 416,000 were
injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. Text messaging creates a crash risk
23 times worse than driving while not distracted. Also, research has found that sending or
receiving a text takes a drivers eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent
at 55 mph of driving the length of an entire football field blind. Parents can implement
rules, such as that cell phones are not allowed to be on while in the car or the phone should be
stored in the back seat or trunk while a teen is driving. Parents also may want to set rules that
multiple passengers (friends) are not allowed to ride in the car until the teen is more accustomed
to driving.
Driving is an activity that offers freedom and mobility. It is also one that places a very large and
potentially destructive piece of machinery into the hands of a driver. Education should be ongoing a s
teens learn to drive.

Sale price
Vehicle owners typically emphasize sale price more than
anything when they decide to sell their car. Though sale
price bears considerable weight, guides such as the Kelley
Blue Book, which sellers and buyers can access for free
online, will likely dictate the sale price, even if the seller
feels such guides undervalue their vehicle. Buyers know
all about these guides, and will be reticent to pay more
than what these guides suggest is the value of the car. But
there is always room to negotiate. Sellers should, if the
car is in pristine condition, set a sale price above the
suggested value so, if buyers do want to bargain, the sale
price ends up being closer to the suggested value and not
substantially below.
Make the vehicle a better buy
Particularly in todays economy, buyers are looking to get
more and more for their money. This actually helps
sellers, as buyers are now more inclined to buy a used
vehicle because it might prove a better value than a brand
new car that immediately diminishes in value the
moment buyers sign on the dotted line.
That said, there are numerous ways sellers can increase
their vehicles curb appeal. First and foremost, sellers
should always address any mechanical issues before
putting a vehicle up for sale. For example, if the car is
having transmission troubles or the brakes are wearing
down, dont put the vehicle up for sale until those things
are taken care of. If you dont want to fix problems, then
you must disclose this information to prospective buyers,
which will certainly reduce the amount of money you
will get for the car.
When addressing whats under the hood, change the oil,
replace the air filter (which often improves the ride
considerably), check tire pressure and inflate the tires as
needed.
Aside from mechanical issues, another big plus to
potential buyers is a car that looks good. Home shoppers
dont want to buy a dilapidated shack, and car buyers
dont want to buy a car with a bad paint job and a
cracked windshield. Such things suggest to prospective
buyers that you didnt care enough to maintain the
vehicle, and they will certainly assume you neglected
whats under the hood as well. Get the vehicle detailed
and wash it at least once a week until its sold.
In addition to addressing the exterior, clean the interior as
well. Vehicle owners tend to live in their cars, and it
shows. Clean coffee stains from cup holders and remove
all trash from the vehicle, including anything that has
accumulated under the seats, in the cushions and even in
the trunk over the years. Remove all excess items from the
trunk, as buyers are typically impressed by a spacious
trunk.
Once stains and trash have been removed, shampoo the
carpets and seats and vacuum the car thoroughly. Its
amazing how easily a vehicles interior can be transformed
with a little elbow grease, and buyers are always impressed
by a clean interior. And dont forget to hang a pleasant
but not overbearing air freshener from the rearview
mirror.

maintenance record
Sellers who have diligently kept records of their vehicles
maintenance should present these records to prospective
buyers. This will indicate you were a responsible owner
and give buyers a feeling of security about the purchase. If
you did not keep records but strictly adhered to a
maintenance schedule, contact the auto body shop where
work was performed to see if they have any records. Most
records are stored in a computer system, so this isnt
necessarily a long shot, especially if maintenance was
performed at a dealership.
Selling a car wont necessarily be easy in the current
economic climate, but sellers can employ a host of
strategies to make their vehicle more appealing to
prospective buyers.

Many motorists rarely think about their auto insurance
policies. Among an adults many monthly or annual
expenses, once signed, an auto insurance policy is
essentially forgotten. However, with a few simple tips,
drivers can significantly reduce the cost of their auto
insurance.
Reexamine your coverage: As a vehicle ages, its wise for
men and women to reexamine that vehicles coverage.
Older vehicles without much market value, for example,
probably dont need collision or comprehensive coverage.
Thats because your claims on older vehicles are not likely
to exceed your deductible, so paying for collision or
comprehensive coverage on an older vehicle is essentially
paying for something youre never going to use.
Another area where motorists frequently spend more than
they need is on personal injury protection. Chances are,
men and women with health insurance are just
duplicating coverage by paying for more than the bare
minimum personal injury protection under their auto
insurance policies. The same holds true for men and
women with adequate life and disability insurance.
Say so long to your muscle car: The type of vehicle you
drive can also impact your bottom line. Drivers facing a
financial crunch might want to look at whats parked in
their driveways. In their 2012 ranking of the most and
least expensive vehicles to insure, Insure.com found that
high-priced vehicles with powerful engines that trace their
origins to Europe garnered the highest insurance quotes.
Such vehicles tend to crash more, leading to more
expensive injuries while costing more to repair. The
average cost of insuring the Audi R8 Spyder Quattro
Convertible, for example, was more than $3,300 in 2012.
Meanwhile, the four-cylinder Toyota Sienna LE minivan
was the least expensive vehicle to insure in 2012, with
owners paying an average of just more than $1,100 to
insure the vehicle. So while that sporty convertible might
make driving more fun, those good times come at a steep
price.
Put safety first: Insurance companies value a vehicles safety
features, and drivers can take advantage of that by putting
safety at the top of their vehicle wish lists. The Insurance
Institute For Highway Safety (www.iihs.org) annually ranks
the safest vehicles by category, including minicars, small
cars, large family cars, midsize SUVs, and a host of other
categories. To save on auto insurance, choose a vehicle that
the IIHS deems a winner when it comes to safety. These
vehicles tend to boast a host of safety features, including air
bags, anti-lock brakes and daytime running lights.
Combine policies: Drivers who also own their homes
should consider combining their policies if they havent
already. Allstate claims that its policy holders who
combine their insurance policies can save as much as 35
percent on homeowners insurance and an additional 10
percent on their auto insurance. Newlyweds who still have
separate policies can save by combining coverage, as can
drivers who also own boats or recreational vehicles that are
not currently insured under the same policy.
Let your provider know if youve changed your driving
habits: Drivers who drive a lot tend to pay more for auto
insurance than drivers who dont drive very often. Thats
because insurance companies offer low mileage discounts
that reward drivers who dont drive very often. Let your
provider know if you no longer have a long commute to
work, are unemployed, participate in a carpool, or take
public transportation to work. Any of those things might
make you eligible for a low mileage discount.
Drivers looking to save money might be able to adjust their
auto insurance policy to earn substantial savings.
