Program advantages
Many courses in this program are specifically designed to address the new and emerging technology in the automotive industry. Students in this program will not only learn about advanced technologies, but also how to apply them in practice for creative design and problem solving. The program provides:

Depth in the area of automotive engineering Breadth across engineering disciplines of electrical, industrial, mechanical, manufacturing and materials engineering Industrially relevant engineering design or research experience through a capstone project or a master's thesis

Capstone projects under Prof T.Shim

16. Computer Simulation of Vehicle Ride (Prof. T. Shim, ME)

This project concentrates on developing computer models for simulating vehicle ride. Areas of interest include, developing models that properly represent the dynamic behavior of independent and rigid axle suspensions. Another area includes tire modeling for vehicle ride and durability simulation.
17. Active Shocks for Off-Road Vehicles (Prof. T. Shim, ME)

The goal for this project is to use computer simulation to determine how effective active shocks can be for

improving the ride and handling of off road vehicles.

18. Brake Based Articulated Vehicle Stability Control (Prof. T. Shim, ME)

The project will develop a theoretical analysis for behavior of articulated vehicles at braking on a low friction road.

Research Areas
Faculty members teaching in the Interdisciplinary Programs are involved in a variety of basic and applied research in automotive engineering and manufacturing engineering. The funding for their research comes from governmental agencies (such as National Science Foundation, Department of Energy and US Army) and industry (such as General Motors, Ford Motor Co., and TRW). Many graduate students in the Interdisciplinary Programs participate in research that includes:

Performance of Lightweight Automotive Materials Stamping, Hydroforming, Tailor-Welded Blanking Automotive Composites Processing and Design Thermoplastic Matrix Composites Injection Molding Spray Forming and Rapid Tooling Rapid Prototyping Joining of Materials Corrosion of Lightweight Metals Engine Combustion and Exhaust Emission Engine Flow Diagnostics Alternative Fuels Performance Analysis of Catalytic Converters NVH and Vehicle Acoustic Packaging Vehicle Dynamics and Controls Automotive Systems Modeling Transmission Systems and Hybrid Powertrains Drivetrain Gear Design Drivetrain Stability Vehicle Crashworthiness Finite Element Crash Simulation Occupant Accommodation and Vehicle Packaging Driver Vision, Visibility and Driver Interface Vehicle Lighting Automotive Power Electronics Sensors for Intelligent Vehicle Systems Supply Chain Management and E-Commerce Intelligent Tolerance Design Lean Manufacturing Modular Design and Manufacturing Robust Design and Product Performance Evaluation Flexible Robotic Assembly Machine Vision Inspection Quality and Reliability Improvement

My ardent desire, after under-graduate studies, is to pursue a Masters course in Aerospace Engineering from a top institution where my dreams will take form and my capability be utilized to the fullest. The University of Florida, with its highly qualified and distinguished faculty, extensive research facilities and exceptional learning environment will, I am sure, help me to tap my potential to

the fullest extent. I am extremely passionate about the subjects Aerodynamics, Computational Fluid Mechanics and Aircraft Design and I hope to improve my knowledge in these areas through my interaction with the experienced Professors in your Mechanical and Aerospace department. I would love to work under Professor Corin Segal as I am also very interested in Aircraft Design and Fluid Mechanics and am fascinated by his research on sub-critical and supercritical fuel flows. It will also be a wonderful experience to work with Professor Peter.G.Ifju in the field of Micro Air Vehicle Design or research with Asst. Professor Andreas Haselbacher in the domain of Computational Fluid Dynamics.
The Masters course in Automotive Engineering at the University of Michigan which is woven to tap the potential of present day engineers, with its depths in automotive engineering and its wings spread across numerous disciplines of electrical, industrial, mechanical, manufacturing and materials engineering will help me realise my dreams take form and utilise my capabilities to the fullest. The renowned university with its highly qualified faculty, extensive research facilities and exceptional learning ambience, I am sure, will bolster my course work. I am keen to work under Professor Taehyun Shim, as my varied interests match his research works on topics like Vehicle Dynamics, Vehicle Stability Control, Tire Dynamics, Modeling and Simulation of Dynamic Systems, Vibration Control. It will be a wonderful experience to work with Professor T.Shim on one of the proposed capstone projects like Computer Simulation of Vehicle Ride, Active Shocks for Off-Road Vehicles and Brake Based Articulated Vehicle Stability Control.
