THE PAINTINGS OF D. STEVENS BURGESS- The artwork of Salem artist, D. Stevens Burgess, is currently on display in the first floor Benn Room of the Courthouse Community Center and will remain on view through the month of September. Stevens was born in New Delhi, India and studied art in Bangkok, Thailand and New York. His exhibit contains 17 works focusing on land, water and the natural world. His studies are creations of his own imagination, and he no longer uses points of reference in any of his pieces. His tones are subtle, and his paintings draw the viewer into the landscape in a most relaxing manner. Stevens has exhibited his work in several area galleries with this being his second exhibit at the CCC. The Benn room is handicap accessible and open to the public

September 13, 2013 www.addigest.com BRUNSWICK HISTORICAL SOCIETY OPEN Wednesdays 1 3 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. 3 p.m. Located in the historic Garfield School, 605 Brunswick Road, Troy and public is welcome. We have an on-site extensive genealogy library available. For information call 279-4024 or view us at http://www.bhs-ny.org EXHIBIT-exhibition opened recently at the Washington County Historical Society: Stocking the General Stores in Washington County, New York, 1900 to 1950. Changes in transportation are documented by period photographs and artifacts. Goods and services in the stores are discussed by local writers who also remembered or heard about railway and canal experiences. Shipments made their way up the Hudson, through the Champlain Canal and north to Lake Champlain or when heading south to Albany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved to accommodate larger numbers of goods and more efficient ways to dispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 now included wooden boxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for home-use, scuttles and baskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, no corrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags, to say nothing of plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and distance which commodities had to travel. Locally, some general stores would take orders and deliver in a day or two. A wagon or cart with horse could be rented by an individual or small business from a livery for local travel. Within the county, stagecoaches could carry travelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, and some mail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general stores provided necessary and desirable goods closer to home. Stocking the General Stores is open to the public at no charge on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. through November. It is in the Heritage Research Center at the Washington County Historical Society, 167 Broadway, Fort Edward, New York. For further information call 518-747-9108 or email wchs@wchs-ny.org. VINTAGE FARM EQUIPMENT EXHIBITION- Tom Davis, local entrepreneur, is opening his farmstead on Lamb Hill Road in Bolton to the public again this year, on Saturday September 14, and will have most of his collection of vintage machinery up and running. This rare opportunity will also include machinery brought in by several other collectors. The farmstead, located at 121 Lamb Hill Road in Bolton, also affords a panoramic view of the Adirondacks to the north. The event, under the sponsorship of the Warrensburgh Historical Society, runs from 10 AM to 4 PM. Admission is free to all. Picnic refreshments will be provided.. Attendees are encouraged to Bring-a-dish to share but this is optional. For further information visit the Warrensburgh Historical Society's website at www.whs12885.org or call 6232207. YOUTHBUILD PROGRAM BENEFITS FROM FUNDS RAISED BY HUDSON RIVER COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION As part of its ongoing Community Heroes Campaign, Hudson River Community Credit Union (HRCCU) recently presented a check in the amount of $250 to Youthbuild, a program sponsored by the Troy Commission on Economic Opportunity. Each month, HRCCU chooses a local not-for-profit community organization and donates five dollars for each new member that joins or existing member that upgrades a service. To date, HRCCU has donated thousands of dollars to local organizations. In YouthBuild programs, low-income young people ages 16 to 24 work full-time for 6 to 24 months toward their GEDs or high school diplomas while learning job skills by building affordable housing in their communities. Emphasis is placed on leadership development, community service, and the creation of a positive mini-community of adults and youth committed to each others success. Students may earn AmeriCorps education awards through their homebuilding and other community service. At exit, they are placed in college, jobs, or both. Hudson River Community Credit Unions mission is to improve the well-being of members and their families by providing quality financial services with the best overall value. Hudson River Community Credit Union has five branches located in Corinth, Glens Falls, Hudson Falls, Troy and Cohoes. The Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned and governed by its members. Anyone who lives, works, worships, attends school or businesses and other legal entities located in Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Rensselaer Counties or the Towns of Cohoes, Watervliet and Green Island and their family members are eligible to join the credit union. Our ability to grasp, process and respond to information about the world allows us follow a purpose. You could say its what makes us, us. So what does this have to do with Toastmasters? Cybernetics is the name given to the study of feedback and systems that use feedback, in all their forms, HollyAnn Carbino, VP of Education stated. A key message of cybernetics is that you cant control something unless you have feedback. The flip side of this dictum is the promise that with feedback, you can control anything. With the right feedback, individuals have been known to control things as unlikely as their own heart rate or as simple as improving their performance. Evaluators and Mentors are key factors in giving members the feedback they need and deserve to hone their skills.Learn how valuable feedback is by visiting Washington County Toastmasters, which meets at the Annex II Building, next to the Washington County Cornell Cooperative Extension Building, 415 Lower Main Street, Hudson Falls, NY, on first and third Wednesdays at 7:00PM. For more information about Washington County Toastmasters, please visit www.washingtoncountytoastmasters.org. Our next meeting is Wednesday, September 18th. Guests are encouraged to arrive a few minutes early to settle in. Come join us, and bring a friend! About Washington County Toastmasters: Washington County Toastmasters is a communications club that allows for a friendly and trusting atmosphere so that all members can refine their skills in a supportive environment. And no other Toastmasters club has as much fun as we do! For more information, please visit www.washingtoncountytoastmasters.org.
