PRINCIPAL PARTS OF VERBS The principal parts of a verb are the forms of the verb which all the forms of the verb can be made. These are: base form, past, past participle and present participle. Tenses are formed from principal parts and helping verbs. Examples: Base form walk begin eat Past walked began ate Present Participle walking beginning eating Past Participle walked begun eaten

2. A phrase or clause that interrupts a subject and its verb does not affect the subject verb agreement. Examples: The captain of the guards stands at attention. The duck with its ducklings swims in the pond. 3. A noun expressing an amount or measurement requires a singular verb. Examples: Thirty-five pesos is the amount we spend on biscuits and juice. One hundred thousand square meters is the estimated area of the forest. 4. With compound subjects joined by or/nor, the verb agrees with the subject nearer to it. Examples: Neither the paints nor the brushes are in the studio. The book or the pen is in the drawer. His friends or the boy runs every day. Either a lantern or candles are used on the porch. Either candles or lantern is used on the porch. 5. A compound subject joined by and must have a plural verb. Examples: Eman and Rina visit their grandparents every month. The twins and Ryan are late. NOTE: Exceptions occur when the parts of the compound subject equal one thing and when the word each or every is used before a compound subject. Examples: Every boy and girl in the class does volunteer work. Bread and butter was all they offered us.

The present perfect tense expresses action that started in the past and is still continuing.it is also used to express action that has been completed at the time of speaking. The verb in the present perfect tense is formed by: has have + past participle

B. Past Perfect Tense The past perfect tense indicates the first of two past actions. The verb in the past perfect tense is formed by had with the past participle. (had + past participle) The time expression is a clause beginning with when or before. The verb in the time clause is in the simple past. The time clause may be placed either at the beginning or at the end of the sentence. Examples: The visitors had left when we cleaned the hall.

B. Future Perfect Tense The future perfect tense indicates a future action expected to happen before another future action. The verb in the future perfect tense is formed by: will have + past participle shall have The time clause in the future perfect tense begins with by the time or before. The verb in the time clause is in the simple present tense. The time clause may be placed either at the beginning or at the end of the sentence. Examples: We will have accomplished many things

IV. PROGRESSIVE FORM A. Present Progressive It is used to show continuing actions or conditions. It is formed with the present tense of the to be verb plus the present participle of the verb. am, is, are + present participle Examples: He is reading a novel. My brother is doing his homework now. B. Past Progressive It shows continuing action, something that was happening or going on at some point in the past. It is formed with the past tense of the to be verb plus the present participle of the verb. was, were + present participle Examples: They were working on a ranch that summer. She was writing her weekly column.

C. Future Progressive It shows continuing action, something that will be happening or going on at some point in the future. It is formed with will plus the present participle of the verb. will + present participle Examples: Some students will be attending the university where Einstein taught by next year. They will be visiting New York this fall.

*The present progressive can be used instead of the future progressive. Example: He will be going to a new school next September. He is going to a new school next September.

Present Perfect Progressive Present perfect progressive tense describes an action that began in the past, continues in the present, and may continue into the future. This tense is formed by using has/have + been and the present participle of the verb . Examples: Mikaela has been tutoring students who were older and taller that her. The CEO has been considering a transfer to the state of Texas where profits would be larger. She has been watching too much television lately. B. Past Perfect Progressive Past perfect progressive tense describes a past, ongoing action that was completed before some other past action. This tense is formed by using had been and the present perfect of the verb. Examples: She had been studying as a college freshman at the age of 11. They had been talking for over an hour before Tony arrived. She had been working at that company for three years when it went out of business. C. Future Perfect Progressive Future perfect progressive tense describes a future, ongoing action that will occur before some specified future time. This tense is formed by using will have been and the present participle of the verb. Examples: She will have been enrolling in high school by next year. I will have been waiting for two hours when her plane finally arrives. James will have been teaching at the University for more than a year by the time he leaves for Asia.
