SUMMERINTERNSHIPPROGRAM
1.

INTRODUCTION
TheSummerInternshipProgram(SIP)formsanimportantcomponentofeducationatIBS.Itisan
attempttobridgethegapinthestudentsperceptionbetweentheoryinbooksandpracticeinthe
corporateworld.Underthis,studentsundertakea14weekinternshipatanyorganization/company
duringtheinterveningperiodbetweencloseofSemesterIIandcommencementofSemesterIII.
SIP carries a weightage of 18 units, which is normally equivalent to six academic courses. The
internship, which would be a simulation of real work environment, requires the students to
undergo the rigor of professional environment both in form and substance. It exposes them to
technical skills, and helps them to acquire social skills by drawing them into contact with real
professionals.
Objective
SIP is a vehicle for introducing students to reallife situation, which cannot be simulated in the
classroom.Therefore,internshipassignmentsmustnecessarilybethoseofdirectinteresttothehost
organization.Studentsareencouragedtotakeuptimeboundmultidisciplinaryandgoaloriented
assignment involving team work. Solutions to various problems confronted in the assignment
mightbeopenended,involvinganelementofanalyticalthinking,processinganddecisionmaking
inthefaceofinsufficientdataparametersanduncertainsituations.Studentsareadvisedtoreadthe
contentsofthehandbookcarefullypriortocommencementofinternship.

2.

SIPATOTHERIBSCAMPUS
Students can pursue SIP at any city of 9 IBS Campuses (Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Dehradun,
Gurgaon,Hyderabad,Jaipur,Kolkata,MumbaiandPune)inareputedcompany.
Students desirous of undertaking SIP at other IBS Campus will submit an application as per the
formatgiveninAnnexureIalongwithacceptanceletterfromSIPorganizationtotheCampusHead
oftheirparentCampusonorbeforeFebruary11,2013.
Studentswhohavenotmetthefollowingacademicrequirementsshouldnotbeallowedtopursue
SIPatotherCampus.
StudentswhohavenotmetminimumacademicrequirementsinSemesterI.
Studentsinvolvedinanycaseofunfairmeans
Studentswiththebackgroundofdisciplinaryactionorpendinginvestigation.
SIPorganizationnotlocatedinthesamecityasIBSCampus.
NonSubmissionofacceptanceletterfromtheSIPorganization.
Studentshavingfeedues.

SIPABROAD
Students are encouraged to do SIP abroad. The student desirous of undertaking SIP abroad will
submitanapplicationaspertheformatgiveninAnnexureIIalongwiththeSIPacceptanceletter
from the SIP organization with the details of the organization, business and company guide, and
obtainedpriorpermissionfromtheCampusHead.
StudentswhowishtodoSIPabroadshouldmeetthebelowmentionedacademicrequirements.
Shouldhavemettheminimumacademicrequirementsattheendoffirstsemester.
Shouldnothavebeeninvolvedinanycasesofunfairmeansinprevioussemesters.
Shouldnothaveanybackgroundofdisciplinaryactionorpendinginvestigation.
Should have submitted SIP acceptance letter from the SIP Company with the details of the
companyandbusiness.
Shouldnothaveanyoutstandingdues.
ShouldhaveinternshipapprovedbytheAcademicCoordinator
IncaseastudentdoingSIPabroaddoesnotmeettheminimumacademicrequirementattheendof
second semester, he/she will not have the option to do Summer Term. It is the responsibility of
studenttonotethispointwhileoptingforSIPabroad.

4.

SIPREGISTRATION
Registration is a mandatory reporting of the student at the IBS Campus for undertaking SIP.
Registration to SIP2013 will take place at IBS Campuses on 11th March, 2013. All students will
positivelyreporttotheIBSCampuson11thMarch2013,pay3rdinstalmentoffeeandregisterforSIP
byfillinguptheregistrationcard.Awrittenacceptancefromtheorganizationwillbeattachedto
theSIPregistrationcard.
The students will report at their SIP Organizations only after completing the registration
formalities.

4.1

AtParentCampus
ThestudentundertakingSIPattheparentCampuswillregisterattheirrespectiveparentCampus.

4.2

ATOtherIBSCampus
The students whose request for SIP at other IBS Campuses is approved will obtain the No Due
certificatefromtheparentCampusandsubmitthesameattheSIPCampusandregisteratSIPIBS
Campusonly.NonRegisteringatSIPCampuswillleadtodeclarationofstudentasNoShowCase
leadingtoDP(DiscontinuedfromProgram).

4.3

AtAbroad
ThestudentsundertakingSIPabroadwillregisterfortheSIPattheSIPorganizationandintimate
AcademicCoordinatorofparentcampus.

5.

FACULTYGUIDEANDCOMPANYGUIDE
EverystudentwillbeassignedaFacultyGuideatthebeginningoftheSIP.TheroleoftheFaculty
Guideistoenablethestudenttoundertakeameaningfulproject,providethenecessaryacademic
guidance,andtofacilitateevaluation,withtheaidofthecompanyexecutives.TheFacultyGuide
wouldbeinvolvedatallstagesoftheSIP,beginningfromdefinitionoftheworkcontenttoproject
completion.
Every student works under the counsel of a Company Guide, who supervises and evaluates the
performanceofthestudentateverystageoftheSIPandgivesfeedbacktotheFacultyGuide.Itis
theresponsibilityofthestudentstoutilizetheknowledgeandexperienceoftheCompanyGuideto
completetheSIP.
ItisthereforenecessarythatthestudentsinteractwiththeFacultyGuideandCompanyGuide
regularly to update them about the progress and seek guidance on SIP. The responsibility of
contacting and interacting with the Faculty Guide vests with the students only. During these
interactions, the student would be informed about his/her performance, progress in the project,
his/her strengths and weaknesses, as observed through various evaluation components and also
ways for improvement. However, the student also has the responsibility to seek clarification
regularlyfromtherespectiveFacultyGuideontheseaspects.
The students undertaking SIP at overseas locations should be in touch with the Academic
Coordinator who will act as Faculty Guide through email for submitting the reports for
evaluationasperthescheduleinadditiontothementoratcompany.

6.

DISCIPLINEANDCONDUCT
Attendance
100%attendanceduringSIPismandatory.However,ifforanygenuinereasonastudentisnotina
positiontoreporttotheSIPorganizationonanyday,he/sheshouldobtainformalpermissionfor
leave of absence as per the rules and regulations of the SIP organization. Such leave of absence
shouldnotbetakenformorethanoneweekintheentiredurationofSIP.
ConductandBehaviour
ThestudentsduringSIPareplacedintheroleofambassadorsofIBS.TheInstitutewouldalways
expectstudentstomaintainprofessionalandsocialimprintsofhighstandardsintheorganization.

IBSexpectsthestudentstoconformtotherulesandregulationsoftheplaceofworkduringSIP.It
isparticularlyimportanttoberegular,punctualandwellmanneredatwork.Duringtheperiodof
SIPthestudentshallbesubjecttotheleaverulesoftheSIPorganizationandshouldensurestrict
adherencetothetimingsoftheorganization.
Unprofessional behaviour, misconduct, indiscipline, irregularity at work and unsatisfactory
performance will lead to cancellation of SIP or award of Not Cleared report (NC). Consequently
students will not be permitted to register in Semester III resulting in the loss of at least one
academicyearbesidesanyotherformofacademicactionIBSmightdeemfittoimpose.
The student will indemnify, defend and hold IBS harmless from and against any and all losses,
damage,liabilityandexpensesarisingoutofanythirdpartyclaim,actionsorproceedingsbyhim
orbyanyagents,duringtheperiodofInternshipprogram.

Evaluation is done at various stages of internship by both the Company Guide and the Faculty
Guide.Thedetailsare:

7.2 EvaluationProcess
The details of evaluation parameters, reports to be submitted and the details of seminar
presentation are described in the following paragraphs. The Faculty Guide and Company Guide
willratetheperformanceofthestudentoneachparameter,ateachstageofevaluation.

InitialInformationReport(IIR)
ThisreportistobesubmittedbythestudentaspertheformatgivenatAnnexureIII.Caremustbe
takentoensurethatallinformationprovidedinthisreportisaccurate.
TheIIRisnotacomponentofevaluationbutitismandatoryandsubsequenteventsareexecuted
onthebasisofinformationprovidedintheIIR.AllstudentsmustsubmitcopiestoFacultyGuide
andCompanyGuide.
StageI:ProjectProposalEvaluation
TheProjectProposalmustcoverthefollowingaspects:
i.

Synopsis:Astatementofabout1000wordsdescribingwhattheprojectisabout.

ii.

Objective:Statingwhattheprojectwillaccomplishandthevalueadditiontotheorganization.

iii. LimitationsoftheStudy.

Schedule:Atimeframeindicatingstepsthatwillberequiredandtheexpecteddatewhenthey
willbecompleted.

vi. References: Initial list of bibliographic and Internet materials that would be used to complete
theproject.
Copies of Project Proposal should be submitted as per the format given at AnnexureIV to both
FacultyGuideandCompanyGuide.

Further,thestudentsareadvisedtoretainacopyofthisExecutiveSummaryReportwiththemfor
futureuse.

9.

SIPCOMPLETION
SIPwillendon1stJune,2013.
OnsuccessfulcompletionoftheinternshipProgram,thestudentmustcollectarelievingletterand
noduescertificatefromtheSIPorganization.

10.

SIPGRADING

The grading of SIP is done on the basis of marks obtained by the students in various evaluation
parameters. As the Faculty Guide and Company guide both will be awarding the marks at each
stage of evaluation, average of total marks given by Faculty Guide and Company Guide will be
consideredforgrading.

11.

SIPNOTCLEAREDREPORT
ThefollowingcaseswouldbeawardedNotCleared(NC)report:
a)

The student who does not give opportunity for evaluating as per the evaluation schedule
wouldbeawardedNotCleared(NC)reportinSIP.Thesestudentswouldberequiredtorepeat
SIPinnextacademicyearwhenitisoffered.

b) ThestudentswhoarenotabletocompletetheSIPwithintheschedulewillbeawardedNC
report.
12.

IBSAFAWARDSFOREXCELLENCEINSIP

IBSAFAwardforExcellenceinSIPhasbeeninstitutedforstudents.Awardwillcarryacashprize
ofRs.10,000/perprojectandaCertificateforthestudent.Thestudentswillbegivenawardinthe
ratio of 1 out of each 60 students. Detailed guidelines for the Award will be issued separately.
However,theexecutivesummarywrittenbythestudentwillbeastartingpoint.

IMPORTANTTIPS

Beforebeginningtheassignment,checkifanyoftheseniorshadearlierundergoneSIPatthe
same organization. If yes, do collect the report submitted by those interns and study them
carefully.CopiesofsuchreportswouldbeavailableatrespectiveIBSCampuses.

Apartfromprovidinganexposuretorealworksituations,theSIPisalsoanopportunityfor
learning the art of information/data identification, classification, acquisition, processing and
presentation.

ProjectsundertheSIPcouldbeofsignificantimportancetothehostorganizationintermsof
their objective of Technical Documentation aiming at updating or modernizing of
informationsystems.Therefore,propercareshouldbetakenwhiledocumentingtheproject.

DuringSIPstudentsareplacedintheroleofambassadorsofIBS.Thestudentsareexpected
to maintain professional and social imprints of high standards in the organization. Good
behaviour and manners would help in nurturing a longterm relationship with the
organization,whichcouldeventranslateintoplacementopportunity.

The students are advised to submit the project report to the host organization for scrutiny
before submitting at the campus. This gives assurance to the host organization about
maintainingsecrecyofconfidentialdata.

In an effort to strengthen and improve the SIP Program, the IBS campus collects feedbackon the
projectfromthestudents.ThefeedbackontheSIPprojectworkistobesubmittedtotheAcademic
CoordinatoraspertheformatgivenatAnnexureVII.

Thefeedbackformaimsatcollectingthestudentsviews,comments,opinionsandsuggestionson
thebasisoftheirexperiencesregardingvariousaspectsduringtheSIPProgram.Italsoforeseesthe
chances for converting these fruitful experiences into a longterm relationship with the corporate
world.

GuidelinesforWritingaProjectReport
A Project Report is a written presentation of the work done by the student on a given assignment. It is
importanttobearinmindthateventhoughtheprojectreportissubmittedonlyattheendofanygiven
assignment,inrealityitisaculminationofcontinuouseffortsonthepartofthestudent.
Writing a Project Report: The SIP requires submission of project report not just to IBS but also to the
organization where the student is undergoing SIP. What follows are general guidelines on writing a
projectreport.
The parts included in a report depend on the type of report you are writing, the requirements of your
audience,theorganizationyouareworkingfor,andthelengthofyourreport.Inageneralizedsense,an

Cover: This is the first page of the report. It should contain the title of the report, name(s) of the

grammatically correct sentences and properly spelled words. While writing these papers/ reports, we
