INTRODUCTION This booklet describes the diagnostic pages and codes of the Collins Avionics System. This publication is intended to help the flight-line technician use these built-in diagnostics to test and troubleshoot the avionics units. QUICK TEST: Show the CURRENT FAULTS page and look for fault messages. NO FAULTS means all monitored units are normal and no messages exist. This is an overall system check; refer to page 3 for instructions. FCS DIAGNOSTICS: Use the FCS diagnostics to isolate an autopilot or yaw damper engage/ disengage problem. The Report Mode codes identify what is currently preventing the AP or YD engage and what caused the last disengage. Refer to the Report Mode pages.

Enter MDC Diagnostic Pages 1. Apply power to avionics. The system becomes stable in approximately 5 minutes. 2. When stable, push the CCP STAT button. 3. If the STATUS MENU DOESNT SHOW, push the CCP MENU button. STATUS MENU shows on the MFD. 4. Turn the CCP MENU ADV knob, until the focus indicator shows around the MAINTENANCE MAIN MENU. 5. On the CCP, push the PUSH SELECT button. The MAINTENANCE MAIN MENU page shows on the MFD. 6. Push either the MFD UP or DOWN line select key to move the cursor (>) to: CURRENT FAULTS, AIRCRAFT HISTORY, ATA INDEX, LRU INDEX OPERATIONS, MDC SETUP, CONFIGURATION DATA, or REPORT DOWNLOAD line. 7. Push the MFD SELECT line select key to show the menu item page.

CURRENT FAULTS Page 1. Show the MAINTENANCE MAIN MENU page. 2. Move the cursor to the CURRENT FAULTS line. Push the SELECT line select key.

NO FAULTS means all monitored units OK This page lists each currently non-functioning LRU that is monitored by diagnostics. Other information can also show on this page. A FAULT MESSAGE line describes the detected problem (or information) for that LRU. The STATUS column indicates one of the following, required actions: 4

FAILED Replaces this LRU. OFF/NO OUTPUT - Check power to LRU. OVERHEAT - Check fan/cooling system. LRU OK/INFO - No fault, information only. MAINTENANCE - Perform unusual maintenance. DEFERRED MAINT - LRU is good, but unusual maintenance (for example, changing a battery) will soon be required. The CURRENT FAULTS page is useful as a quick system test and should be used to verify proper system operation after a maintenance action is completed. Remember to allow the system to stabilize for at least 5 minutes before using the diagnostics. (See page 2.) Check the CURRENT FAULTS page when a problem is first suspected. NO FAULTS annunciates when no diagnostic messages show. If the diagnostic system has detected a failure, this page shows the problem LRU name with a descriptive FAULT MESSAGE and STATUS condition. Check these displays and do the required action as defined in the previous paragraph. For example, the fourth fault listed in the sample display means: The number 1 communications management unit (CMU 1) is diagnosed as NO OUTPUT. Since there is no CMU 1 output, (NO OUTPUT), the required action (OFF/NO OUTPUT status) is to check the power (input) to the CMU 1. The CURRENT FAULTS page is an active display that automatically updates as fault conditions appear or clear. Most fault entries show on this page between 0 and 30 seconds after they are first detected. Some monitors provide a time delay to prevent nuisance display of transient conditions. When there are multiple pages, to show the previous or next page, push the PREV or NEXT line select key. To show the MAINTENANCE MAIN MENU page again, push the RETURN line select key. 5

ADVANCED DIAGNOSTICS Page 1. Select an LRU field on the CURRENT FAULTS, FAULT HISTORY (page 95), or FLIGHT LEG DETAIL (page 99) pages to show the ADVANCED DIAGNOSTICS page.

This page shows, under the ADVANCED DIAGNOSTICS title, LRU, LRU STATUS, ATA chapter, and COMP ID. Under the VIEW DETAILED DIAGNOSTIC DATA, this page shows a plain-English description of the problem, and lists the diagnostic words for the selected LRU. The top portion of the display lists the reporting 6

LRU along with a description of the current problem and the display format selection lines. The lower portion shows the diagnostic word fields and associated diagnostic data. This display is active and updates as new data is received. If a fault message is gone after a REFRESH command, MESSAGE NO LONGER ACTIVE shows at the bottom of the page. The SHOW MESSAGE DATA (or SHOW LRU DATA) line is used to change between the LRU DIAGNOSTIC DATA display and the DATA USED TO DETERMINE MESSAGE display. The ADVANCED DIAGNOSTICS page shows active data words and status conditions, as well as the diagnostic words that caused the fault message to be recorded. The diagnostic words can be from other LRUs. The DATA USED TO DETERMINE MESSAGE display shows all the diagnostic words that were used in the MDC logic equation. The LRU DIAGNOSTIC DATA fields show the octal label and diagnostic word received from that LRU. A maximum of ten diagnostic words can be shown. The field shows dash lines if the associated word is not received. Each diagnostic word contains useful information that may simplify troubleshooting effort. The diagnostic words show in either binary or hex format. The SHOW IN HEXADECIMAL or SHOW IN BINARY line is used to change between the formats. In the binary format, the diagnostic words show the word label and then bits 31 thru 9. The bit numbers are read from left to right in vertical pairs (3 over 1, 3 over 0, etc. thru 0 over 9) for bits 31, 30, etc., ending at the right with bit 09. 7

Refer to the Diagnostic Word Bit Definitions table to decode the information contained in these bits of the diagnostic word. A Sign Status Matrix (SSM) indication of failure warning does not always mean a bad unit, but could simply mean that a bit is set in the diagnostic word. The SHOW IN HEXADECIMAL format shows the word label, the source LRU NAME, and the sixdigit DATA columns. Push the TAB line select key to toggle the cursor between the selection lines of the display and the diagnostic words. When the cursor is on the diagnostic word field, push the SELECT line select key to access the DATA READER page. The DATA READER page shows the bit state and the definition for each bit in the applicable label. Push the RETURN line select key to show the CURRENT FAULTS page. Continue to push the RETURN line select key to show the MAINTENANCE MAIN MENU page.

DIAGNOSTIC DATA Page On the ADVANCED DIAGNOSTICS Page, the cursor is always defaulted to VIEW DETAILED DIAGNOSTIC DATA. Push SELECT line select key to show the DETAILED DIAGNOSTIC DATA page.

The DETAILED DIAGNOSTIC DATA page options are the REFRESH, DATA FORMAT, DATA VIEW, and diagnostic word lines. Use the UP and DOWN line select keys to move the cursor to the desired line. When the desired line is highlighted, push the SELECT line select key. The bottom of the page shows the instructions USE TAB TO SWITCH BETWEEN FIELDS. The TAB button moves the 9

cursor from the operation button lines to the diagnostic word labels. The REFRESH line causes the MDC to update the data on this page. The LRU diagnostic words are updated. If the fault or service message is gone, the MDC shows MESSAGE NO LONGER ACTIVE. The message shows on the dashed line at the bottom of the page. The DATA FORMAT line is used to change between the diagnostic words being shown in a hexadecimal or binary format. Select the DATA FORMAT line and use the TAB button to show the hexadecimal or binary format. The hexadecimal format shows the diagnostic word label, the LRU NAME, and the six-digit, hexadecimal, diagnostic word. The binary format shows the diagnostic word label and bits 31 through 9 from left to right. Refer to the Diagnostic Word Bit Definitions table to decode the information contained in these bits of the diagnostic word. A Sign Status Matrix (SSM) indication of failure warning does not always mean a bad unit, but could simply mean that a bit is set in the diagnostic word. The diagnostic word lines are used to view the DATA READER page. The diagnostic word lines show the current diagnostic words received from other LRUs. A maximum of ten diagnostic words can show. The diagnostic word bits do not show (dash lines), if the word is not received. 1. To show the ADVANCED DIAGNOSTICS page, push the RETURN line select key. 2. To show the MAINTENANCE MAIN MENU page, push the RETURN line select key again.

10

DATA READER Page 1. On the DETAILED DIAGNOSTIC DATA page, push the TAB line select key to move the cursor to the diagnostic words. 2. On the DETAILED DIAGNOSTIC DATA page, use the UP and DOWN line select keys to move the cursor to the desired diagnostic word label. 3. Push the SELECT line select key to show the DATA READER page for that label.

11

The DATA READER page contains more data about the diagnostic word label that was selected on the DETAILED DIAGNOSTIC DATA page. The top line shows the diagnostic word label and the LRU name. This page contains one line of data about each bit for the applicable label. It shows the state of each bit.(1, 0, or a dash). It shows a dash if it receives no data for an applicable bit. 1. To go back to the DETAILED DIAGNOSTIC DATA page, push the RETURN line select key. 2. To show the MAINTENANCE MAIN MENU page, push the RETURN line select key again. DIAGNOSTIC WORDS The following pages define the information contained in the LRU diagnostic words. Each word shows in binary or hexadecimal format, and can be easily interpreted to read the data contained in that word. Read a diagnostic word as follows: 1. Show the word or words of interest on a data bus reader. 2. Mark 1 or 0 on each line on the Diagnostic Word Bit Definitions page. Each line defines one bit of the diagnostic word. The description of each line marked with a 1 is true. 3. If only hexadecimal format is available, convert each hexadecimal digit to binary format (that is. 6 = 0110) as shown below.

The LOAD FILES FROM DISK page is used to make the selection of the type of files to install from the Data Base Unit. The LOAD FILES FROM DISK page has the DIAGNOSTIC TABLES line, ALL CHECKLIST FILES line, and USER CHECKLIST FILES ONLY line. The Data Base Unit disk drive operates with two types of 3.5 in. diskettes. The two types are high density (2 MB unformatted, 1.44 MB formatted) and double density (1 MB unformatted, 720 kB formatted). Note: If a 2 MB diskette is formatted to the 720 kB format (or a 1 MB diskette is formatted to the 1.44 MB format), the Data Base Unit will not recognize the diskette as valid. The Data Base Unit reads directories; reads, writes, or renames files; and delete files stored on diskette. Personnel can format the diskettes on IBM-compatible PCs with MS-DOS 3.30 or later. The MDC diagnostic fault logic is operated from a set of tables that are stored in the disk loadable files. The DIAGNOSTIC TABLES operation installs new maintenance tables and the MDC automatically erases all flight leg history in storage in the NVM (Nonvolatile Memory). FCS DIAGNOSTICS Pages The FCS DIAGNOSTICS pages provide a means to isolate faults within the flight control system. Use these diagnostics if an autopilot or flight director problem is suspected. The FCS DIAGNOSTICS are controlled by the Flight Guidance Computers (FGC). The FCS DIAGNOSTICS consist of three basic modes: The REPORT MODE shows selected internal FCS monitor information. The INPUT MODE shows selected inputs to the FGC Flight Guidance Computers. The OUTPUT MODE shows and controls selected outputs from the FGC Flight Guidance Computers. The FGCs DO NOT store the diagnostic codes in nonvolatile memory. The FGCs begin recording data at power up and retain this data only while power remains on. When the airplane is powered down, all accumulated data is lost. When investigating an FGC problem, write down all nonzero REPAIR, AP ENG, AP DIS, YD ENG, YD DIS, and STEER codes before power shutdown. Record all six digits of each non-zero code. Certain FGC diagnostic codes are sent to the MDC computer and may be stored in the MDC nonvolatile fault memory. The FGC outputs the REPAIR, AP DIS, AP ENG, YD DIS, YD ENG, and BOOST code fault data to the MDC. These codes show in the Report Mode. If the MDC fault memory is not full when FGC codes are sent, this data is recorded in memory. The information is now retained after power down. The information shows on the AIRCRAFT HISTORY page as FGC (350 and 351) diagnostic words. If the MDC fault memory is full when the FGC codes are sent, the data is not stored. 148

How to enter FCS DIAGNOSTICS: 1. On the Cursor Control Panel (CCP), push the STAT button to show the last displayed STATUS format. 2. If the last displayed STATUS format is not FCS DIAGNOSTICS, push the MENU button on the CCP. Status Menu shows on the MFD. 3. Turn the MENU ADV Data knob to highlight the FCS DIAGNOSTICS. 4. Push the PUSH SELECT button on the CCP, to access the FCS DIAGNOSTICS page. 5. The REPORT MODE shows on the FCS DIAGNOSTICS page. Push the NEXT MODE line select key to change the display to the INPUT MODE, OUTPUT MODE, and then back to the REPORT MODE display. 6. A blue arrow on the FCS DIAGNOSTICS page points to the (left or right) FGC that controls the MFD display. Push and hold the MOVE CURSOR line select key (on MFD) to change the FGC source of display data. How to exit FCS DIAGNOSTICS: 1. Push the STAT button on the CCP to return to the navigation display.

149

150

REPORT MODE Page 1. On the Cursor Control Panel (CCP) push the STAT button to show the last displayed STATUS format. 2. If the last displayed STATUS format is not FCS DIAGNOSTICS, push the MENU button on the CCP. STATUS MENU shows on the MFD. 3. To highlight the FCS DIAGNOSTICS, turn the MENU ADV DATA knob. 4. To access the FCS DIAGNOSTICS page, push the PUSH SELECT button on the CCP. The REPORT MODE shows on the FCS DIAGNOSTICS page. 5. Push the NEXT MODE line select key once to change the MFD display to the INPUT MODE, once again to display the OUTPUT MODE, and once again to return to the REPORT MODE page. This page reports the status of internal monitors in the FGC computers. Five selectable parameters show LEFT FGC and RIGHT FGC data. Use the MFD line select keys to select the REPORT MODE operations. Push the LEFT SUMMARY or RIGHT SUMMARY line select keys to show a summary explanation of left or right codes of the cursor line. Use the SCROLL UP or SCROLL DOWN line select keys to change the parameter on the line with the cursor.

151

RECORD ALL NON-ZERO CODES BEFORE POWER SHUTDOWN A Report Mode Parameter List is provided that gives each parameter available for display. Parameter names that denote errors show the total number of errors that have occurred since power-up. Parameters that denote codes are given below. If any code is non-zero, use the LEFT SUMMARY or RIGHT SUMMARY line select keys to show a left or right summary screen to interpret that code. The summary screens are dynamic displays that 152

show code explanations in order of priority (top line is highest priority). If there is more than one problem, solve the highest priority first; related problems may also go out of view. This publication also provides tables to interpret these codes.

REPAIR CODE is an error summary of events that occurred after power up. If the code is 000000, no faults have been detected. AP ENG CODE explains why the autopilot does not engage. The code names all the conditions that currently prevent the AP engage. 153

AP DIS CODE explains why the autopilot disengaged itself. This code latches to identify the cause of the last AP disengage. YD ENG CODE explains why the yaw damper does not engage. This code names all conditions that currently prevent the YD engage. YD DIS CODE explains why the yaw damper disengaged itself. This code latches to identify the cause of the last YD disengage. STEER CODE explains why Flight Director (FD) fail is annunciated on the PFD. This code names all conditions that are currently causing the flight director to fail. BOOST CODE explains why a rudder boost failure was detected. The code names all the conditions that are currently causing the rudder boost to fail. Report Mode Parameter List

INPUT MODE Page 1. On the Cursor Control Panel (CCP) push the STAT button to show the last displayed STATUS format. 2. If the last displayed STATUS format is not FCS DIAGNOSTICS, push the MENU button on the CCP. The STATUS menu shows. 3. Turn the MENU ADV knob to highlight FCS DIAGNOSTICS line. 4. Push the PUSH SELECT button on the CCP. The STATUS menu shows on the FCS. 5. To change the MFD to the INPUT MODE, push the NEXT MODE line select key. The page lists input signal information that is received by the FGC computers. This mode is especially useful to isolate a failed unit that supplies data to the FGCs. Five selectable parameters show signal data inputs to the LEFT FGC and to the RIGHT FGC. If applicable, units of measure show adjacent to the parameter. Use the MOVE CURSOR line select key to select the input-mode parameter line. Use the SCROLL UP or SCROLL DOWN line select key to change the input signal parameter on the line with the cursor.

168

The Input Mode Parameter List shows all available input signal parameters. The most useful inputs are decoded and show with a unit of measure (for example, feet or degrees) so that this value can be easily compared with related displays/indications in the aircraft. The SOURCE LRU column names the unit that generates that input signal and the source word label. This column also names the data bus (IOC-3, AHC-1, etc.) that supplies this information to the FGC. ARINC data words are organized as follows:

169

ARINC WORD BITS 1-8 9-10 11-13 14-29 30-31 32

DESCRIPTION Label (octal) SDI (source ident) Pad/secondary data Primary data SSM (status) Parity bit

External (non-FGC) data shows as two input signal parameters. One parameter is a descriptive name and the other is an SSMPSI parameter. The SSMPSI parameter shows the SSM, Pad data, and SDI values. These two parameters show all pertinent information provided in the input data word. For example, preselect altitude information is provided in the 102 word. This information is presented in the ALTPRE and 102 parameters. The ALTPRE input parameter shows the preselect altitude setting in feet. This information is decoded from the primary data (bits 14 through 29) of word 102. Some primary data is not decoded into a signal value, but instead shows as a hexadecimal value. The unit of measure for these signals show as 29-14H. The 102 input parameter shows the remaining pertinent information in three digits. The unit entry on this line is SSMPSI. This means the three displayed digits are (in order): the SSM, Pad data, and the SDI. The SSM digit is 0 (failed), 1 (no computed data), 2 (unit in test), or 3 (normal). This digit is decoded from bits 30 and 31 of the input word. The Pad digit lists miscellaneous information that is normally pad (0 = not used) or secondary data. This digit is decoded from bits 11, 12, and 13 of 170

the input word. The SDI digit is 0 (not used), 1 (left LRU), 2 (right LRU), or 3 (not used). This digit is decoded from bits 9 and 10 of the input word. SSM

To simplify diagnostics usage, a capability to quickly swap between these two parameters is available. When the cursor is positioned on a serial bus input, a data/status swap can be done by pushing the lower left line select key on the MFD, labeled SWAP DATA. This label only shows when the cursor is positioned on an ARINC bus input parameter. For example: if the cursor is positioned at the IAS parameter, push the SWAP DATA line select key to change the parameter at the cursor to 103. Push the SWAP DATA line select key to return to the IAS parameter. Input Mode Parameter List

OUTPUT MODE Page

1. On the Cursor Control Panel (CCP) push the STAT button to show the last displayed STATUS format. 2. If the last displayed STATUS format is not FCS DIAGNOSTICS, push the MENU button on the CCP. The STATUS MENU shows. 3. Turn the MENU ADV DATA knob to highlight the FCS DIAGNOSTICS Line. 4. Push the PUSH SELECT button on the CCP. The REPORT MODE FCS DIAGNOS-TICS page shows. 177

5. Push the NEXT MODE line select key twice to show the OUTPUT MODE. This page lists the selected outputs from the FGCs. These outputs may be controlled if both FGCs are in diagnostics mode and the airplane is on the ground. Five selectable parameters show output signals from the LEFT FGC or RIGHT FGC. Use the MOVE CURSOR (L-LSK1) to select the desired output mode. Use the SCROLL UP (L-LSK2) or SCROLL DOWN (L-LSK3) to slew the output signal parameter on the line with the cursor. The Output Mode Parameter List describes each parameter available for display. This table lists a signal description and the modification range for each parameter. The display source indicator is an arrow that points left or right to indicate which FGC is providing the display data to the MFD. In the output mode, this indicator is especially useful. Both FGCs must be in the output mode (not just in diagnostics) to fully utilize the modify options. Since only one FGC provides the display data to the MFD, it is helpful to push and hold the MOVE CURSOR line select key and check the selected mode of the other FGC before beginning troubleshooting effort using the output mode. The arrow also indicates the (controlling) master FGC when both outputs are synchronously changed. MODIFY column heading shows if the active (cursor) line can be modified. The LEFT, RIGHT, EITHER, or BOTH legends show on the active line in the MODIFY column. When LEFT shows in the MODIFY column, only the left FGC output can be modified. Push TOGGLE LEFT (L-LSK4) to change the logic 178

output or push and hold SLEW LEFT (L-LSK4) to synchronize both linear outputs to the master FGC value and then change both outputs in the minus direction.
When RIGHT shows in the MODIFY column, only the right FGC can be modified. Push the TOGGLE RIGHT (R-LSK4) to change the logic output, or push and hold the SLEW PLUS (R-LSK4) to synchronize both linear outputs to the master FGC value and then change both outputs in the plus direction.

The EITHER and BOTH modify options are not available unless both FGCs are in the OUTPUT MODE (not just in diagnostics). Push and hold the MOVE CURSOR line select key to alternately select left and right side display data, and ensure that both FGCs are in output mode. When EITHER shows in the MODIFY column, the left and right FGC logic outputs can be modified independently. Modify using the TOGGLE LEFT and TOGGLE RIGHT as described above. When BOTH shows in the MODIFY column, the left and right FGC linear outputs can be modified synchronously. Modify using the SLEW MINUS and SLEW PLUS as described above.

Modify the FGC Servo Outputs Control of the FCS outputs is only possible when both channels of the FCS are receiving a valid IAS of under 60 knots, on-the-ground logic, and flightguidance-panel control of diagnostics is enabled for both channels. 1. Disengage the autopilot. 2. On the Cursor Control Panel (CCP), push the STAT button to show the last displayed STATUS format. 3. If the last displayed STATUS format is not FCS DIAGNOSTICS, push the MENU button on the CCP. 4. Turn the MENU ADV DATA knob to highlight FCS DIAGNOSTICS when the STATUS menu shows. 5. Push the PUSH SELECT button on the CCP to access the FGS DIAGNOSTICS page. 6. The REPORT MODE page of FGS DIAGNOSTICS shows on the MFD. The word TEST shows on the left and right PFD. 7. Push the NEXT MODE line select key twice to show the OUTPUT MODE page. Both FGC computers have to be in the OUTPUT MODE. 8. Push and hold the MOVE CURSOR line select key to switch the blue arrow to the other FGC. Push the NEXT MODE line select key to show the OUTPUT MODE page. 9. On the Flight Guidance Panel (FGP), push at the same time, the left FD button and any two mode select buttons. The word TEST (yellow) shows on the pilot and copilot PFDs. 10. On the flight guidance panel, push at the same time, the right FD button and any two mode select buttons. The word MODIFY shows as a column heading. If the active (cursor) line can be modified, then the word EITHER, BOTH, LEFT, or RIGHT shows on the cursor line in the MODIFY column. 181

11. Set the 65APMN, 65YDMN, 86APEN, and 86YDMN parameters to TRUE. This sets the FGC internal monitors to a valid condition. 12. Set the AILCUT, ELECUT, and RUDCUT parameters to FALSE. This sets the FGC cutout logic so that the system can engage. 13. Engage the yaw damper and autopilot. 14. Select the AILCMD (or ELECMD/RUDCMD) parameter and move the cursor to this line. WARNING: WARNING: ADJUSTING THE SERVO COMMAND VOLTAGE CAUSES THE CONTROL SURFACES TO MOVE.

15. Push the SLEW MINUS or SLEW PLUS line select key to change the servo command voltage. The control wheel (or control column/rudder pedals) move as the servo runs. The MN and CUT parameters must remain set as described above or the system will not engage. The AILCUT, ELECUT, and RUDCUT outputs cannot be set to FALSE if the FGC I/O processor sets them to TRUE. The 65APMN, 86APEN, 86YDMN must be true, and AILCUT, ELECUT, RUDCUT must be false, to engage. Exit DIAGNOSTICS 1. Push the STAT button on the CCP to return to the navigation display.
