SMALL SCALE WIND ENERGY SYSTEMS

BUILDING INTEGRATED WIND POWER SYSTEMS

NISHA.K (M.ARCH) GEN 1350007 2013-15

INTRODUCTION
A small wind turbine is a wind turbine used for micro generation, as opposed to than large commercial wind turbines, such as those found in wind farms, with greater individual power output. These turbines may be as small as a 50Watt generator for boat, caravan, or miniature refrigeration unit. It is becoming more common to incorporate wind turbines into buildings as a way to increase a buildings sustainability . The effective use of wind turbines in an urban environment is very different from the use of turbines on traditional wind farms.

Considerations and Challenges for any Building-integrated turbine project:

The effects of the urban surroundings and building aerodynamics on wind conditions at the turbines The effects of those wind conditions on optimal turbine placement The accurate prediction of wind power output for building-integrated turbines Compared to the regional wind conditions, the winds near the building surface will typically be gustier and more uneven across the turbine blades, which will affect the turbines performance. the influence of neighbouring structures and the effects of the building itself. Noise inside the building Vibration transmitted through pole Structure borne noise caused by vibration Structural damages if supporting elements not strong enough for turbine weight Turbulence due to interaction of wind with buildings increases stress on turbine blades and noise levels

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES BUILDING INTEGRATED WIND POWER SYSTEMS

The wind is free and with modern technology it can be captured efficiently It csn be used possibly along with solar or biomass, provide a decentralised supply of energy They are available in a range of sizes to allow supply to a range of demands. This means that turbines can be installed locally to provide energy On top of all of this, using wind power to meet your energy demand can dramatically reduce energy bills . urban installations on top of buildings help reduce the reliance on the grid. . Once the wind turbine is built the energy it produces does not cause green house gases or other pollutants. The strength of the wind is not constant and it varies from zero to storm force. Wind turbines are noisy with level of noise as a family car travelling at 70 mph. When wind turbines are being manufactured and transported to the location it consumes quite a bit of energy. it has been difficult to understand how the wind behaves in built up areas, resulting in low power outputs and ultimately, bad reviews. urban and suburban areas include considerable turbulence and turbines mounted there have simply not been capturing enough laminar wind. Predicting wind-energy quality and density is more complicated in built up areas, such as cities, than in rural plains where there are few obstacles upwind of the turbine.

STRATA LONDON

The building exceeds current UK building regulations on sustainability by 13%, and the turbines are expected to generate up to 8% of the buildings energy needs an innovation that translates directly into electricity bill savings for every of the 408 apartments. Embracing sustainable design and renewable energy technologies Strata has become the first building in the world to have integrated wind turbines.

STRATA LONDON

Located in one of the Mayor of Londons Energy Action Areas, the 148m high 43-storey residential development is a new landmark on London skyline. It has three five-bladed, 9m diameter integrated wind turbines, and a high performance unitized aluminum curtain wall system and low energy landlord areas. This arrangement will help generate 50 mega watt hours of electricity per year for the landlords supply. It is believed that Strata SE1 will achieve a predicted 73.5% reduction in CO2 emissions when compared against the Building Regulations NISHA.K (M.ARCH) GEN benchmark. 1350007 2013-15

GREENWAY SELF PARK

It is a partially self-powered, 11storey parking garage in downtown Chicago designed by HOK. The buildings dozen verticalaxis wind turbines, which are stacked in two double-helical columns along the southwest . The design makes intelligent use of passive as well as active technologies for harnessing natural energy flows. Ventilation, for example, is accomplished without a mechanical plant because the garages porous skina tapestry of vertical cast-glass planks spaced at varying widths and overlapsis at least 20 percent open on every level, meeting local code requirements. The 12 self-starting, lightweight aluminum S594 turbines, manufactured by Helix Wind, were selected for the relatively low wind velocity (11.1 mph) at which they start producing usable electricity,

Vertical-axis turbines can exploit wind from any direction at a wide range of velocities, a strong bonus for harnessing the fickle breezes of urban microenvironments. Each turbine rotates independently and is capable of producing up to 4.5kW of power. The Greenway Self Parks two-way power meter allows the garage to give and take, redirecting electricity back to the Chicago utility grid whenever there is more energy produced than consumed. By positioning them as two continuous vertical stacks against a chamfered corner facing the intersection of West Kinzie and North Clarke streets, the chamfer increases the turbines wind exposure. Each modular unit, measuring 16 feet high and 4 feet in diameter, is clipped in to a dedicated support column, or spine tube, which transfers the turbines weight to the garages precast concrete structure.

Harvesting Wind Power from Tall Buildings Shaping of tall buildings to enhance the performance of wind turbines.

The Bahrain World Trade Centre Tower is formed to create a Venturi effect, placing the horizontal axis turbines between two wings of the building. This approach clearly works for only a limited number of wind directions, but may be useful in a location with a very dominant prevailing wind direction. Restricting the orientation of horizontal axis turbines, however, severely limits the efficiencies gained from using this type of turbine.

The Pearl River Tower slots through the tower are used to relieve the pressure between the front and rear faces of the tower with these slots being aerodynamically shaped to increase flow through them. Again, this approach is most efficient for only a few wind directions, but has the advantages accelerating the flow while likely reducing the turbulence approaching the turbines.

The turbines, each 18 feet tall, stand in three parallel rows and are mounted in a specially designed hood that crowns the roof of OMRFs 130-foot-tall research tower. The helical turbines, reminiscent of the shape of DNA, will create an estimated 85,500 kilowatt hours of energy annuallyenough to power seven average-sized homes for a year The turbines are constructed of aluminum and steel, making them heavyduty enough to withstand the Oklahoma elements but light enough to harness the maximum amount of wind power. The energy they create is fed directly into the towers grid in a system that uses wind-generated power when available but seamlessly switches to OG+E power when necessary.
