AE 4350 Aircraft Design Project #1 -2013 Information Gathering Objective

This project challenges students to take an example vehicle from one of a range of vehicles classes and perform an in-depth investigation of the characteristics and performance of that vehicle as well as other similar vehicles within that class, and then compile that information into an example requirements document.

Project Description
Before undertaking any design project it is critical to first understand what has been done before. For this exercise each student has been assigned a vehicle from one of the following classes: commercial airliner, military transport, military fighter, business jet and military bomber. For their respective airplane the student should gather as much information as possible. The parameters listed below are critical and need to be included. All of the numerical information gathered should be presented in a table or series of tables. Critical Information: Geometry: Wing Area Wing Aspect Ratio Wing Taper Ratio Wing Sweep Weights: Maximum Takeoff Weight Empty Weight Maximum Fuel Weight Maximum Payload Weight Performance: Range Cruise Speed/Mach Maximum engine thrust

In addition, the other information should be used to prepare a brief description of the airplane, its mission, a history of its development, where it fits into the market, and how and where it is manufactured. This section should be at least 500 words in length, and demonstrate knowledge beyond what can be gained from Wikipedia (not a valid reference, though you can look at their references for links). The student should also provide a standard three-view of the airplane.

For the second part of the project, students must select five airplanes similar to the assigned one (not including derivatives). For each airplane there must be a paragraph explaining why it is similar and the critical information listed above should be compiled and presented in a table or series of tables including the original aircraft. The final part of the project is to write a set of requirements for the assigned airplane. Examples of the type of data to be included can be found in examples from Roskam Part I as well as Andersons Performance and Design book. At minimum, a design mission must be designed, as well as any other performance requirements, but additional non-performance requirements should be included. It is not expected for the student to include every possible requirement (a requirements document can run hundreds of pages), but the most important requirements should be included. The requirements should be organized hierarchically like the examples shown in the lab exercise.

Deliverables
A bound project report must be submitted no later than 3:05 pm on Friday September 13th in paper form outside of Weber 322. No late submissions will be accepted. If the report is unbound, stapled, paper clipped, or held in a three-ring binder then 10 points will be deducted from the score. This report must be written in Microsoft Word using the template provided in the class website, or similar, and the formatting guidelines specified therein. The contents of the report must address all of the requirements, questions and issues described in the sections above. Your report quality should adhere to "best commercial practices," which will be expected for all assignments from this point on. It must be concise, written with a professional tone and avoiding wordiness and grammatical / spelling mistakes. All sources must be adequately cited. See honor code statement. Images must be in color and all plots must be legible (labels, axes, units, etc). The report should not exceed 20 pages of content including images (does NOT include cover page, list of figures, references, etc). The report section names do NOT need to follow the names given to each of the requirements. Each report should have a cover page with the title of the assignment, Instructors: Neil Weston and Carl Johnson, name of the student, date the assignment is due, and the following signed statement: "I certify that I have abided by the honor code of the Georgia Institute of Technology and followed the collaboration guidelines as specified in the project description for this assignment."

Suggested Resources
See the Tsquare site for a report template. For gathering information on aircraft the library has current and past copies of Janes All the Worlds Aircraft, which is an invaluable resource.
