LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT IN BRIDGE BUILDING AWARD

Honorable Jerry Brown Governor of California

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT IN COMMUNITY BUILDING AWARD

Mrs. Laura Lai

DISTINGUISHED ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Mr. Zheng Chongbin

Governor Brown is a dear friend to the Chinese community and has made unparalleled contributions in bringing forth Californias awareness of acupuncture, a key component of traditional Chinese medicine. His leadership was critical in legalizing acupuncture for licensed practioners in 1975. In 2012, he signed two bills placing acupuncture on the list of essential health benefits, making it affordable and accessible for all Californians. Under Governor Browns leadership, more women, Asians, Latinos and African Americans have been appointed to high government positions than any other chief executive. The Chinese Culture Foundation is proud to honor Governor Brown with our 2013 Lifetime Achievement in Bridge Building Award.
!

Laura and Him Mark Lai have done more to rescue Chinese American history from oblivion and give voice to Chinese Americans than anyone we know. As a team, they crisscrossed the country and China to collect original records. In 2013, Laura Lai established the Him Mark Lai Learning Center as the education and youth hub at the Chinese Culture Foundation. The legacy of Him Mark Lai lives on with activities designed to empower the families and young generation from all backgrounds. The Chinese Culture Foundation is honored to present Laura Lai with our 2013 Lifetime Achievement in Community Building Award.
20136 2013!

A long time friend and collaborator of the Foundation, Zheng Chongbin exhibited his work here in as early as 1999. A decade later as our Xianrui artist 2011, he launched a brand new body of work indicating a transformative vision, which embodies completely divergent trajectories that subvert the dominant understanding of artistic form and motion. His visionary work breaks both traditions of ink and abstract painting, and is collected by the British Museum, Asian Art Museum and other prestigious private collections. Zheng Chongbin is one of the most important artists in abstract painting of our time. The Chinese Culture Foundation salutes Zheng Chongbin for his artistic excellence with our 2013 Distinguished Artistic Achievement Award.

CCC ON THE GO
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MESSAGE
Dear Members and Friends, The Chinese Culture Foundation was created during the Civil Rights era to preserve and promote our heritage. For over forty years, leaders of the Foundation built on that legacy and explored the rich cultural nexus between tradition and innovation. Our mission today is to spark intercultural discovery through art, education and engagement. We are united in our vision to inspire dialogue locally, nationally, and globally.

FROM

Culture embraces many aspects of our lives. The Chinese Culture Foundation (CCF) has continued to evolve to bestow and compare our heritage in traditional, contemporary and intercultural forms. CCF offers exciting activities that reach into our communities and touch people of all ages. And I am honored and thrilled to be part of these innovative experiences.

On October 5th this year, we celebrate 48 years of service with our Harmony and Bliss dinner gala. We invite you to join us in honoring 3 distinguished individuals whose legacy has transformed the political landscape, fostered community cooperation and exemplified artistic achievement. We salute Governor Jerry Brown, Laura Lai and Zheng Chongbin for their extraordinary contributions. As we reflect upon 48 years of service, we are proud to report our impact is continuing to grow. Over 60,000 people engage with our programming this year, including 10,000 audiences in Hangzhou, China. WOMEN, which started as an exhibition about feminism and sexual minorities, has become a movement that connects Shanghai, San Francisco, and Miami with excitement from New York, L.A., Hong Kong and more. The founding of the Him Mark Lai Learning Center, the hub of youth empowerment and community engagement, has consolidated our education programming. Over 40 schools and 4,000 students took part in the Chinatown Democracy Walk to learn the contributions of Chinese in shaping Americas understanding of civil rights. More than a hundred people will join the Roots California - Discover Locke expedition on October 12. The success of the Chinese Culture Foundation belongs to you and the community. I hope you will set aside October 5th to celebrate another milestone year with us! Sincerely,
