NARRATOR: The year was 1939.

Albert Einstein and other physicists explored nuclear energy and the possibility of an atomic bomb. At the same time, German physicists pursued atomic weapons to defend his master race. Einstein decided to write a letter [*SWITCH SLIDE] to President Roosevelt, encouraging the president to support the development of atomic weapons. EINSTEIN: Reads a section of his letter NARRATOR: It took two years for federal interest to catch on. [*SWITCH SLIDE] NARRATOR: Two years after Einsteins letter to Roosevelt the U.S. launched the Manhattan Project. Robert Oppenheimer was the director, [*SWITCH SLIDE] working alongside Enrico Fermi, Hans Bethe, Edward Teller, Victor Weisskopf, and Richard Feynman. After three years at hard work, the scientists had finally developed and exploded a small atomic device. [*SWITCH SLIDE] A month later, they had succeeded in creating the two atomic bombs, dubbed Little Boy and Fat Man. [*SWITCH SLIDE] NARRATOR: The bombs were ready to be used and the only thing that was left to do before dropping them was obtaining federal consent. President Truman was the one to make the ultimate decision. The most difficult decision of his life, Truman finally decided to drop the bombs. [*SWITCH SLIDE] TRUMAN: The United States has come into the possession of extremely powerful atomic bombs. By dropping them on Japan, we will hopefully end the war and spare the lives of thousands of U.S. soldiers. Our targets are purely militaristic, and we will attempt to not harm any innocent citizens. By dropping these bombs, we will be benefitting the rest of the world as well as ourselves. The Soviet Union will see our extreme power in action and World War II will be over. [SWITCH SLIDE] Narrator: After Truman made the decision to drop the bomb, the crew of the Enola Gay was chosen to go up into the air. A few

You will leave tonight. Pilot: Yessir. (getting things together while the commander changes hats) Soldier walks in Pilot: Are you and the crew ready? Soldier: Yessir. (pulls up chairs and sits down. After a few silent moments .. ) Pilot: (gets up and turns around) For the few that may not have heard, this mission is to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. You in the back, ready to drop the bomb? (Soldier gasps but doesnt say anything) (Silence for the next minute while different facial expressions appear and disappear on the soldiers face) Pilot: Ok, prepare to drop the pants. Soldier: (Turns around to an empty seat): Good luck. (closed eyes) [*SWITCH SLIDE] Soldier: (opening eyes after explosion sound) My god, what have we done? Narrator: Then Bocks Car dropped a bomb on Nagasaki [Switch Slide] 100,000 Japanese died in the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. [End DRAMATICALLY, Gabe]
