HD 050 Controller
The HD 100 Controller is suited for the operation of
Slide bars
Turntables
and equipment which is developed customer-specific.
It permits the operation of these devices
Manually
Semi-automatically
and remote-controlled via the IEC bus.
In manual operation, the devices connected can be moved by using arrow keys, for example
the antenna can be moved up or down.
It is also possible to input target positions with the numerical keyboard and to start the
movement.
A STEP mode facilitates the movement of the device stepwise.
F or masts, turntables and slide bars, there are SET UP menus which permit initialisation
and the displacement of the limits of movement. Here the rotating speed of the drive motors
can be changed in several levels.
Individual positions can be stored in a memory and approached automatically again by
calling up the number of the memory.
Several such stored positions can be joined together in a SEQUENCE which is then carried
out simply by pressing a button.
All inputs are subject to a syntax check and displayed as an error if appropriate. Erroneous
commands are not carried out.
All commands except STEP and SEQ can also be transmitted via the lEe bus.
Switch-on Menu
After switching on, the Switch-on menu appears in the display:
I-------HD-- 050
GPffi",Adr: 7
MM5014.4
This menu remains displayed for 3 sec., after which the main menu is displayed.
Adress Menu
If the REM key is pressed when switching on, the GBIP address menu appears:
! GBIP!
ADRESS: 7
By inputting a number and transferring with ENTER (yellow key), a new IEe bus address
is set. The controller then goes into the main menu automatically.
General Set Up
If the SET UP key is pressed when switching on, a complete set up is started. The
description of the different set ups see at the special chapter.
If the general set up is finished, the display shows the main menu.
-------------------------------------i-I:)N-_-2---------
Direct Positioning
The arrow keys <-- --> can be used to move the devices selected directly. It is possible
to travel only within the limits of movement which have been set. If the end position is
reached, the movement is stopped and the display blinks.
Position Assignment Using the Keyboard
The numerical keys can be used to assign a target position (setpoint). The POS Key is to
be pressed first for this. The following appears, for example (antenna mast mode of
operation):
345 em
em
The cursor is located on the first position of the input field < Setpoint >. By pressing on
one of the number keys, the display of the input field < Setpoint > can be changed. Only
whole cm can be input.
By pressing the <ENTER> Key, the verification and implementation of the command are
initiated. It is first checked to determine whether the input is valid or not, meaning that the
value may not be smaller than the lower reference point (depending upon the KMS, this
value is stored in the SETUP menu) or larger than the KMS length. If the value is wrong,
the Error menu is called up and the message appears in plain language (Code 01/02). If
the value input is correct, the antenna support travels to the setpoint and the actual value
is measured continuously and displayed in the input field <Actual value>. After reaching
the target position, the value in the input field <Setpoint> is deleted.
i-I:)N-.-3----------
Step Mode
Every device can be operated stepwise, meaning in steps. To do this, the STEP Key is to
be pressed first. For example, the following appears: (Turntable)
I
Requ.
. Step
523 em
. 6 em
A minimum step width is prescribed for every device. With the numerical keys, every step
width can be set, which is larger than the minimum value and smaller than the maximum of
the line. The value is transferred with ENTER.
"CONTINUE" is used to select whether the device is operated continuously or in the
step mode. In the step mode, the step width set appears in the STEP field. Otherwise, this
field remains blank.
f-i:)N-_-4---------
Storage of the Device Setting
Press the STO Key
Storage of a position setting
Storage Number: n
A position will be stored. The number "n" identifies the memory number under which the
setting is stored. The memory places must be filled continuously. For this reason, the
largest possible memory number is displayed. It can be accepted with ENTER. By
inputting a number which is smaller than the one displayed, the setting can be stored under
any desired number.
The following appears next:
I
Save
_ No.: 1
The desired position can now be input. It is then stored under the memory number
selected.
F or example,
I Save
Requ. 120cm
The desired position can now be input. It is then stored under the memory number
selected.
A maximum of 20 settings can be stored.
Call-up of Stored Positions
Press the RCL Key
Setting
No.: n
After inputting a memory number under which a setting has been stored, the values stored
appear in the first line.
If ENTER is pressed as long as this value appears on the display, the device moves to the
position stored.
Sequence
Press the SEQ Key
I SEQUENCE:
To store a sequence, enter the numbers of the desired settings, separated by a"-". After
the last setting, the input is concluded with ENTER. A maximum of 10 steps can be
input. If a sequence has already been input, it appears on the display. It can be accepted
with ENTER. Every other key deletes the sequence stored.
The following appears:
I SEQUENCE
1-2-3
By pressing ENTER, the values of the settings are transferred to the controller as the
setpoints and the device moves to the position stored. The initial menu appears during this
sequence and the actual values and the setpoints are displayed. When the device reaches
the desired position, the above menu appears again. The next setting appears at the first
position. All further settings input are called up again using ENTER.
With STOP, it is possible to terminate the sequence and the device is back in manual
operation again.
------------------------------------i-I:)N---6---------
STOP the movement
Press the STOP Key
The motor can be stopped at any time by pressing the STOP Key and the device remains
standing still. Work can continue as usual afterwards.
REM
Press the REM Key
In manual operation, this key has no effect. In IEC bus operation, the yellow LED lights
up. Pressing on this key switches to manual operation.
Error Messages
With inputs which are syntactically incorrect or unknown, a switch is always made to the
Error menu. The error messages are identified with a code.
ERROR-NR: 1

Valid numbers are 1 to 8.
After the initialisation, work can continue manually or via the IEe bus.
lEC Bus Commands
General
- All outputs through the IEC bus are five characters long,
followed by Line Feed (OAR). Missing positions are filled
with blanks (20H).
- All values are transferred in CM.
- Negative values are not allowed.
- The commands, values and units must be transferred in
capital letters and separated by blanks.
- No more than 32 characters may be sent in one transmission.
- The Line Feed or the EOI can be used as an end character
(CR will be ignored).
Registers
The IEC bus interface of the control device has several registers
available. By transmitting the register name, the register is made
the current register. If the device is addressed as TALKER, it
outputs the contents of the register set.
If a value has been loaded previously with LD, it is accepted into
the next following register.
Input and output Registers
These registers can be assigned a value with the LD command. They
can be read out when the register name is received and the control
unit is then addressed as TALKER.
FL
BL
CP
GP
NP
SP
Front Limit
This cannot be larger than the physical lenght of the
slide bar and may not be smaller than o.
Back Limit
This cannot be smaller than 0 and may not be larger than
the front limit.
Current position
Glider position
Switches the IEC bus interface to slide bar, so that
every command following which is not clearly refered to
a specific device is refered to the slide bar.
Next position
Setpoint for the GO command
(speed) speed with which the device moves
Valid numbers are 1 to 8
(e.g.: "LD 5 SP")
output Register
This register can only be read.
BU (Busy) Motor status
0: Motor is off
1: Motor is on
This register indicates whether the motor and thereby
also the glider are presently being moved. For mechanical
reasons, the motor cannot start immediately after the
receipt of a start command. It is therefore necessary to
wait until the motor moves (BU = 1), before it is
possible to enquire with BU whether the previous command
has been completed. If the glider is already located in
the desired position when a GO command is received,
BU will nevertheless be set on 1 for approx. 0.5 sec.
Command to Load the Registers
LD nnn eM - Load the value nnn into the register following.
Commands to Control the Slide bar
FO
BA
GO
Moves the glider forward until the front limit is
reached or a STOP command (ST) is received.
Moves the glider backwards until the back limit is
reached or a STOP command (ST) is received.
Moves the glider to the position which is in the
setpoint register (NP). In the calculation of the
distance to travel, the run-out of the last movement is
taken into account, so that the positioning is more
accurate than it would be through a continuous evaluation
of the current position.
Error Messages
E - P:
E - S:
E - V:
E - D:
(Power) Is sent after a loss of mains power
(syntax) Is sent when an invalid command is received
(Value) Is sent when a value does not lie within the
valid limits
(Device) Is sent when the device no longer reacts,
meaning that the motor does not move in spite
of the control.
Operation of More Than One Device with One control unit
Similar commands and registers exist for all devices which can be
operated with the control device. Some of them are identical for
all devices (LD CP NP GO BU) .
If more than one device is operated with the same control unit
(e.g. antenna mast and slide bar), the control device must first
be informed of the device to which the following commands apply.
This is done by transferring a register or a command which refers
clearly to this device.
For the slide bar, they are the following:
BL FL BA FO GP
A command sequence such as
"BL LD 140 CM NP CP GO"
has the effect that the glider moves to 140 CM and the current
glider position can be read out, even if another device (e.g. the
table) has been addressed previously.
program Example (for HP-87 GPIB)
The following small program loads the front and back limits,
then travels to 140 CM:
OUTPUT 708,"LD 534 CM FL"
OUTPUT 708,"LD 0 CM BL"
setting of the limits
Load the setpoint, set CP as the current register for the output,
travel to the setpoint
OUTPUT 708,"LD 140 CM NP CP GO"
Indicate the current position on the screen
LOOP: INPUT 708,A$i DISP A$
IF VAL(A$) <> 140 THEN GOTO LOOP
It is better to interrogate the Busy Flag (BU). Because of the
correction of the mechanical run-out, the setpoint might not be
reached exactly.
The program would then read as follows:
OUTPUT 708,"LD 534 CM FL"
OUTPUT 708,"LD 0 CM BL"
setting of the limits
Load the setpoint, set BU as the current register for the output,
travel to the setpoint
OUTPUT 708,"LD 140 CM NP BU GO"
wait until the motor moves
WAIT: INPUT 708,A$
IF VAL(A$) <> 1 THEN GOTO WAIT
wait until the command is carried out
LOOP: INPUT 708,A$
IF VAL(A$) <> 0 THEN GOTO LOOP

SET-UP AND COMMISSIONING OF THE SLIDE BAR
Set up the slide bar at the location of the measurement.
Set up the drive foot and free the toothed belts from the
transport attachment.
Lay the upper part of the toothed belt toward the back and pull
the lower part through the first part of the rail. Place the rail
onto the drive head and attach the connecting plates, supporting
the rail end thereby. Follow the same procedure with the other
rail parts and the end foot. The slide bar can be adjusted
horizontally on the centre feet. Tighten the positioning screws
afterwards.
Attach the absorber clamp to the toothed belt.
Adjust the tension of the toothed belt with the tensioning screws
on the end head. The belt tension is correct when the absober
clamp can be raised approx. 10 cm in the centre of the slide bar
without great effort.
After connecting the power supply line and control line to the
control device, the slide bar is ready for operation and can be
operated in accordance with the instructions.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE
If dirty, clean the surfaces with a household plastic cleaner and
a soft cloth.
After lengthy use, tracks from the runners can be seen. These
should be removed with spirit occasionally.
Attention: Do not use solvents for cleaning!
Pay attention to dirt on the toothed belts and clean when
necessary. The toothed belts must be operated without lubrication.
After lengthy use, the transport toothed belt at the reversing
foot needs to be tightened. For that purpose, loosen the 4 bearing
screws and remove the tensioning screws until the belt tension is
correct. Thereby the absorber clamp should be moved. Tighten the 4
bearing screws afterwards.
ATTENTION!
Approx. every 200 operating hours, the axles of the runners on the
absorber clamp and on the drive head and reversing head must be
lubricated with a conventional machine oil, whereby no oil should
reach the running surfaces of the wheels.

We would like to make an Emission-Measurement with the

System Meyer de Stadelhofen/Llithi
The measuring device for the interference capability in the
metric wave-band (30 ... 300, 1000 Me respectively) of mains-
operated electrical appliances
In connection with a measuring receiver according to CISPR, the
absorbing clamp MDS enables to measure the interference capability of radio
interferers, such as domestic appliances, electric tools etc. directly; viz.
by measuring the power generated by the interferer and fed to its supply
cable.
At the plenary meeting in Stresa in 1967, the International Special Commit-
tee on Radio Interference (CISPR) adopted the measuring method developed by
Mr. Meyer de Stadelhofen and his staff in the department for research and
development of the Swiss PTT (1) as a standard for the metric wave-
band. It has decided to insert same as paragraph 4.1. 3 in its Pub1. 2.,' The,
relevant text makes part of Doc. CISPR (Bureau Central) 338 published in
January 1968, describing the new measuring device as well as the method of
calibrating it. Exact instructions for procedure are given as well. In addi-
tion to that, Doc. CISPR (Secretariat) 727 states the history of the develop-
ment of this new device and also mentions the investigations made in various
countries.
The measurement'of the interference power is substituted for the measurement
of the interference voltage at the terminals of the interferer connected to
an artificial mains network, and for the field-strength measurement resp.ect-
ively.
Measuring with the absorbing clamp MDS is simple, reliable and, if the inter-
ference source is constant, well reproducible. It is easier to measure the
power generated by the interferer than the field-strength. As the absorbing
clamp MDS is not influenced by the presence of stray interference from other
sources, no screening cabin is necessary. It is especially noteworthy that a
changement of the surroundings of the appliance to be measured, which was
/
essential for the previous procedures, is no longer influencing the test re-
sults.
Principle
The interference energy is mainly radiated from that part of the mains cable
which is next to the interferer. By convention, the interference capability
is defined in terms of the power which would be radiated by a tuned aerial
located in the same place as the mains cable. This power is almost equal to
- 2 -
that fed to an absorbing device joined to the mains cable and distanced
from the interference source so that it absorbes the maximum power at the
specific frequency the receiver is set at.
When a generator with a source impedance of 50 ohms supplies a suitable load,
its terminal voltage expressed in dB (pV) has the same numerical value as
the power input in dB (pW) increased by the constant 17. If the measuring
device between interference source and receiver effects a damping of 17 dB
over the whole measuring range the power generated by the interferer can be
read in dB (pW) directly on the measuring receiver calibrated in dB (pV).
The absorbing clamp MDS is based on these considerations and enables to
measure the interference power in the frequency range from 30 to 300 (1000
respectively) MC directly. The exactitude is within 3 dB, which is suffi-
cient in most cases. Whenever an especially exact measuring is necessary, a
correction can be taken out of the calibration curve supplied together with
the device.
The absorbing clamp is calibrated in accordance with the substitution method.
construction
The device consists of a great number of ferrite rings surrounding the inter-
ferer's mains cable. These rings are arranged in a straight row, and some of
them are components of the coupling transformer. The output voltage is pro-
portional to the high-frequent current in the cable. The voltage is measured
by an interference measuring receiver. The result is uninfluenced by the
operating current in the mains cable as the currents, being in opposite di-
rections, compensate. A coaxial filter stops the high-frequent interference
currents which could circulate via the screen of the cable between the ab-
sorbing clamp and the receiver.
The ferrite rings are split into half-rings, one half being fitted into the
lower part of the body of the device and thus forming a channel in which the
mains cable of the appliance can be laid. The other half of the rings are
arranged in the hinged top part of the clamp. Each half-ring is set in a re-
silient plastic-holder moving in guide slots. As soon as the clamp is locked
with the. handy eccentric closures providing the necessary pressure, the mag-
netic circuits around the cable are closed. The clamp is equipped with four
rollers which guarantee a slight shifting for regulating to the maximum.
Other possibilities of application
The absorbing clamp MDS can also be used for investigating the effectiveness
of the screening on coaxial cables (2).
Moreover, it can be used in the reverse direction to inject a jamming signal
into the screening of a receiving aerial cable in order to measure its im-
munity to external fields.

Device in the form of a clamp. It is suitable for interference measuring
services and laboratries which have to measure the interference capability
of numerous various appliances. The hinged top part of the clamp can be
opened and the mains cable of the interferer be laid in the channel formed
by the split half-rings. After locking the device the magnetic circuits are
closed, and the arrangement is ready for measuring. For regulating to the
maximum the clamp is equipped with four rollers for a slight shifting.

1. The bipartite bushing fastened to the absorbing clamp has to be removed
for measuring interferers with a mains cable whose diameter exceeds
10 mm. This bushing '.::hQ exactitude when measuring interfer:ers
with thin cables.
2. The interferer 1 is placed or: an insulating base (measuring bench). The
mains cable 2 has to be extended to the length of at least Ll according
to the lowest interference frequency to be measured and must be laid in
a straight line. It must be located at a distance of at least 0.7 m from
any conducting wall or above conducting floors. After having laid the
cable into the channel of absorbing clamp 3, the latter is locked
with the two eccentric closures. Turn the transformer side (green mark,
bushing) towards the interferer.
3. Set the measuring receiver 4 at the relevant frequency (for example the
lowest) and set the interferer in operation.
4. Move the absorbing clamp away from the interferer until the greatest de-
flection is obtained on the indicator of the receiver.
The person who is moving the clamp I'.'ill grip same at the side turned
away from the interferer. In case of a permanent installation it is re-
commendable to move the cl amp en \\'ooden <]uide rails by the help of a
string.
5. On princi.ple, the first :r.aX:dm;m observed on the way from the i.nterferer
ought to be measured. At frequencies exceeding about 150 MC, however,
the maximum often occurs in the handle of the interferer. In this case
the distance L2 is adjusted to the second maximum, provided that this
results in a higher value than the measurement with the absorbing clamp
pushed close to the interferer.
6. Read the interference capability on the instrument of the receiver.

7. Practical directions
7.1 Measurement of an interferer whose interference voltage is unstable or
discontinuous.
In this case the mains cable of the interferer must be inductively coupled
with an auxiliary interference source of a continuous and constant inter-
ference voltage. A battery-operated shaver 5, for example, is suitable
for this purpose.
The auxiliary source of interference is installed at a distance of about
15 cm from the mains cable and about 10 cm from the interferer.
After having adjusted the receiver to the frequency to be measured, the
distance L2 of the absorbing clamp is set for the maximum interference.
For this purpose the mains p l \ ~ of the interferer has to be removed from
the mains socket.
Switch off the auxiliary source and set the interferer in operation. Carry
out the measurement of interference in accordance with Point 6.
7.2 For measurements to serve as a general gUlae where space is limited the
interferer's mains cable is pulled through the stationary clamp, and the
lengths of the cable on both sides which cannot be straightened are put
together to form tangled heaps (this means to say that no coil must be
formed). Using this method the measuring result is between 0 and 3 dB
too high depending on the frequency.
If a mains plug connection or a coupling prevents the determination of
the maximum two measurements are carried out: once with the plug close
to the right, then to the left side of the clamp. The interference capa-
bility corresponds to the tligher reading increased by 2 dB.
