Department of English
English being a compulsory subject the Department was established in 1963 with
the college itself. Mr. V.R. Raut worked as the first Head of the Dept. of English. He
worked from 17-06-1968 to 31-08-1987. After his retirement Mr. V. S. Bedre worked as
the Head of the Dept during 01-09-1987 to 30-09-2003. Since then Dr. A.V.Kulkarni has


been working as the Head, Dept. of English. Presently English Dept. is the largest Dept. in
the college having more than 2057 students in Arts, Commerce, Science & Home Science
Faculties. The Dept. has been running the courses like B.A., B. Com., B.Sc., M.A.
(English) and Certificate course, Diploma Course and Advance Diploma Course in
Functional English. In last year we have fulfilled the requirements recommended by
Reaccreditation Peer Team, New Delhi by Establishing Advance Language Laboratory and
well-equipped E-Seminar Hall in the Dept. All these facilities are availed by students of all
the Faculties and by all Teaching and Non-teaching staff of the college. Presently Eight
Faculty members are working in the Dept. Out of them four members have been awarded
PhD and M.Phil while other three have completed their M.Phil. Out of eight members two
members have cleared NET/SET Exam. Two members have been registered for PhD.
Five M.R.P. were sanctioned by UGC to the Faculty members of the Dept. and the total
outlay is 3, 25,000 Rs. Dr.Kiran Khandare is a member of BOS and member of
Faculty of Commerce in SGB Amravati University. Mr.V.H.Hiware is a member of BOS in
Science Faculty in SGB Amravati University. Dr. K.S. Khandare is recognized PhD
supervisor in English by SGB Amravati University, Amravati.

Department of Botany
The Department was Established in 1967 with the UG course in the subject under
the headship of Dr. E. V. Upadhye.
In Early days, Department has three faculties, Dr. E. V. Upadhye, Head of the
Department and Master in Palaeobotany. The other faculties, Dr. M. K. Day was
brilliant academician and gold medalist in subject. Dr. Azhar Hussain, a renouned
adademician later enter in politics and worked as minister of state.
The PG Course was started in 1993 and Departmental Laboratory was recognized
by SGB Amravati University, Amravati for Ph. D. research in 2000.
Currently the Department is running successfully under the leadership of Dr. D. G.
Bhadange. He had also worked as Dean Faculty of Science, Amravati University,
Amravati and member of other University bodies like BCUD, BUTR, BOE etc.
(2007-2012)
He is currently, a member of BOS and Faculty of Science, Amravati
University, Amravati.
He is also working as member of Secondary & Higher Secondary Board of
Edcucation, Pune.
For his contribution in academics and societal work, he was awarded with

The Department of Chemistry is rated as one of the best in Vidarbha for its teaching
and research
Activities.
The Chemistry Department was established in 1967 and since then the Department
has made an
all round progress in all directions.
The Post Graduate Department of Chemistry came into existence in 1992. Chemistry
laboratory is
recognized for Ph.D. Research by SGB Amravati University in 2000.
Certificate course in Analytical Chemistry started in 2006.

Department features a dedicated and experienced 12 member faculty with
expertise in Chemistry.
Five Faculty Members are Recognized Research Supervisors of S.G.B. Amravati
University, Amravati.
Ten research projects have been completed successfully and work on One minor
research project and Two Major research projects are in progress of total cost of
Rs.36, 16, 600 /-.
16 students have completed Ph.D.
More than 172 research papers have been published in peer reviewed journals.


Active participation of Faculty members and research students in Indian Science
Congress, Annual Convention of Chemist, Council of Chemist and other National
International seminars and workshop
Award winning participation of students in various intercollegiate seminars and quiz
competitions.
Department regularly organizes intercollegiate seminar, quiz competition and
Chemistry talent search
examinations, Aptitude test for UG and PG students.
Twelve text books based on the under graduate syllabus have been written by
faculty members as authors and Co-authors.

Department of Home Science
The department Of Home science emerged as an individual faculty in the year 1978.
Previously Home science was one of the subject of the Arts faculty and the department
was a part of Social Science.
Further the Masters Degree was introduced in 1983 with two post graduate courses in
1.Textile and Clothing & 2.Human Development.
The infrastructure of the department wasset in an area of approximately 193.63sq meter
In the year 1978. Further it was extended up to 289.43sq meter in 2003. Now the
department has a spacious area of 322.15 Sq meter with all the laboratories and a staff
room.
Vacational courses in M.Phil counducted by Amravati University were organized by the
department from 1986 to 87 for three years. Short Term courses were under taken in 2003-
04, at minimum charges. Carrier oriented program in Fashion designing is carried out from
2006 until today.


The laboratory is recognized for under taking research leading to Ph.D. Two staff
members are recognized Supervisor as well as Referees in SGBAU,Amravati and
RSTMNU,Nagpur. All most all the faculty members have been awarded Ph.D. except one
who is on the verge of completion. The staff is actively involved in research activities and all
have worked on research project, presented and published research papers on National
and International levels.
The department has organized various workshops, seminars, and conferences among
which a Vidharba level conference was hosted in 1991 and Mahila Pradhyapak Parishad in
2003.The Home Science Association was established on 28th Dec 1992.
Extension Activities are under taken by the Department from1978 regularly among which
the major activities are-
Organization of Health Camp
Immunization and Distribution of medicines.
Demonstrations of Balanced Diet and Food Packets
Consultancy and Counseling in the area of Health, Nutrition, Psychology and Textile
& Clothing.
Skill Development Workshops.
Exhibition & Display of Products for Self Employment for Women and Girls from
Slum Area.
The poor and needy have been benefited from these services.
Extracurricular activities are undertaken by the Department each year for the benefit of the
students : a few to mention are- Guest Lectures, Educational Tours and Visits, Social and
Cultural Programs, Promotion of Values of National integration and environment, Debate
elocution, Quiz and Seminars,etc.
Industries implant training and Entrepreneurship Devlopment Programmes are carried out
for students.
The staff has a history of membership in University Bodies such as BOS, BOE,
Academic Council, Subject expert, 32(5), 64, syllabus restructuring in SGBAU ,Amravati


and RSTMNU Nagpur. Dr. Rekha Lande is elected as a Dean of the Faculty of Home
Science in Jan 2013.
The Staff membesr work as Coordinatosr and members of major committees like-Steering
committee for NAAC, Grievance Redressal, Entry in service for MPSC & UPSC, Guest
Lectures, CAS, Health Unit, Canteen, Girls common room, Admissions, Extension Activities
and Contribute to College Administration.
The staff members visit Abroad for Carrier advancement from time to time.
The Best Teacher award and the best non teaching award of 2012-13 of the
institution was bagged by the department.
The students have bright history of University Rank Holders and students actively
participate in Sports.
In the year 2009-10 and 2012-13, four students have passed the SET Exam. And
the year 2012-13 has witnessed the Head of the Department being elected as the Dean of
Home Science Faculty of SGBAU, Amravati.





Department of Physics
Physics department was established in the year 1967. Post-graduation in Physics
was started in 1993 on permanent no grant basis and affiliated to SGB Amravati University,
Amravati. The students of this department are well placed in the private as well as govt.
sector. Four Minor Research Projects have been successfully completed from the
department. The department has modern equipment for experiments and a good core
library consisting of about 250 titles and more than 100 e-books. The department has got
the broadband connectivity. The department is presently headed by Assoc.Prof. R. V.
Salodkar, who is also the coordinator for PG Physics.At present department of has five
teching staff members and four non-teaching members.


The department has successfully organised UGC Sponsored National Seminar
in Current Trends in Physics and Electronicson 28 March2010.

This Year Ku. Huma Kausar Khan, Awarded Gold Medal and secured 1st Merit in
M.Sc.(Physics) examination of Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University .Two of our PG
students Ku. Bina Chandak M.Sc-II - Passed NET &SET-2008 and Mr. V B Bhise also
cleared NET- 2012 Examination.

UGC Sponsored Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Study Centre, has run under the
Scheme of Epoch making Social Thinkers of India in Shri Shivaji College of Arts,
Commerce & Science, Akola. The progress Report of Programmes, Field Work, Lectures,

DBAS Centre started its extension activities from 2008-2009 to till Date in the rural
and urban areas of Akola District.

H) Establishment of Library and Documentation :
A library consisting of about 2500 books and a few journals is established. Besides
this reports of different organizations and government documents have been collected and
compiled. It is an ongoing process.
I) Collection of News paper Clipping :
All the press clipping related to the issues of scheduled castes, scheduled tribes,
other backward classes, minority and women have been collected. This will help in further
research. It is also be an ongoing activity.
J) Publications/Reports :
Three proceeding (SOUVENIR) of the National Seminar & Two proceeding Of Inter-
National Conference are published. These are available at the Centre Office. Two Books
are Published with ISBN no. by the Director Of Study Centre. The News Paper cutting as a


report of the various programmes are also available and placed in the Documentation
Centre of the Centre Library.

Department Commerce

The Department of commerce established in 1963. There are highly qualified and
experienced teaching faculties and about 2000 students are taking quality education in
Marathi and English medium at under graduate and post graduate level.
Commerce Department have well equipped computer laboratory with broadband facility.
Teachers are always engaged in ICT based teaching. Recently, there are two UGC
Sponsored Career Oriented programs i.e E Commerce and Insurance.
The Department organised two national level conference and seminar form time to time.
