SEMINARS AND FIELD TRIP REPORT

I.

Plant Company Visit: JJ Horizon Plant July 26, 2013 Observation and Lesson Learned: Rectangular beam- for PCC pavement only. Cylindrical for structural purposes. Slump test- this measures the consistency of the concrete mixture. Wet Mix- involves the pumping ready mixed concrete to the nozzle. Compressed air is introduced at the nozzle to impel the mixture onto the receiving surface. It is more favourable for large volume placements. Dry Mix- the dry cementations mixture is blown through a hose to the nozzle, where the water is injected immediately. It appears to be better for a low volume placements.

II.

Design Mix- where the contractor is responsible in selecting the mixture proportion to achieve the required strength and workability. Admixture- chemicals which is added to the mixture for increasing or decreasing the time of settlement of the concrete. Curing of Sample: a. Covering after finishing. To prevent evaporation of water from the unhardened concrete, the specimens shall be covered immediately after finishing, preferably with a non-absorptive, non-reactive plate or a sheet or bag of tough, durable, impervious plastic. b. Initial Curing. During the first 24 to 48 hours after moulding, all test specimens shall be stored under conditions, representative of the concrete in the structure or pavement. Standard Testing: a. Cylinders (7 days,28 day break) b. Air test c. Slump test III. Summary and Recommendation Concrete mixture serves a very important role in the construction so concrete mix should be tested and should have a proper ratio of its mixture for safety and for the consistency and workability. I could recommend to the school that they should purchase additional laboratory materials in order that the students could also experience some testing of the concrete mix like slump test and etc.

I.

Plant Company Visit: Philippine Ports Authority August 16, 2013 Observation and lesson Learned Harbour- any protected water area affording a place of safety for vessel or a shelter of the vessels from storms and etc. Port- a location on a cost or shore containing on or more harbour where ships can dock and transfer people and cargoes. Pier- is a structure extending out into the water from the shore to serve as a landing place for vessels; it constructed perpendicular to the shore line. Wharf- a structure built on shore parallel to the shoreline so that vessels may lie alongside to receive and discharge cargo and passenger.

II.

Coastal area- the land and see area bordering the shoreline. Coastline- line that forms the boundary between the land and water. Pile- a long or section of concrete or metal to be driven or jetted into the earth or sealed to serve as a support or protection. Revetments- a facing of stone, concrete, etc. built to protect a scarp, embankment or shore structure against erosion by wave action or currents. Coast way- a raised road, across wet or marshy ground or across water. Cylindrical Fenders- Fenders are used to prevent damage to boats, vessels and structure.

III. Summary and Recommendation Port plays a very important role to the country in terms of economy and transportation. The more ports the much easier for the transportation of people and goods to any location of a certain country so the government should build or construct ports for its own benefits. I could recommend to the school that the school should purchase additional transportation services for the students like buying buses especially for the field trips of the student.
