Unfolding Fundamental Research Design As the society is moving in the direction from less developed to more developed, the

community of researchers are trying to document this transition in their respective research works. If we look at the daily augmenting volume of academic literature, either it can be visualized that the research papers are trying to answer to a question, which is persistent for a longer while, or those are trying to initiate a new question. Both of the categories are imperative given the research setting or the problem to be addressed. In the community of the researchers, the latter one is considered as a seminal work, and the former one is considered as an incremental work. However, from ontological perspective, their nomenclatures are different. The former one is called as Deductive study, and the latter one is called as Inductive study. Both of these two aspects differ from each other fundamentally. Here we will discuss about both of these aspects. Deductive study: Many researchers consider this approach as a bottom-up approach. This approach starts with the conceptual hypotheses development. A relational aspect contained by a particular setting is observed. Subsequent to that, the validity of that observation is looked up by means of the existing body of literature. Based on the literature, the epistemological foundation is formed and replication of the observation in diverse settings gives birth to the ontological foundation of the study. Operationalization of the hypotheses is carried out by the constructs and variables already taken up in the former studies in different settings, and then they are either transformed or rejected in accordance with the setting in hand. Then the hypotheses are proved or disproved based on the methodological analysis of the data. Inductive study: By far, this is considered as the classical approach. Researchers also call as the top-down approach. Based on a generalized observation, the ontological foundation is built. To boil down the foundation for operationalization purpose, it goes though the stage of epistemological survey of existing body of relevant literature. Based on that, the hypotheses are made. Constructs are taken from the abstract ontological ground and are validated against the epistemological survey. Then the hypotheses are proved or disproved based on the methodological analysis of the data, just like the previous case.
