Programs
July has been a time of continued implementation combined with preparations for the end of Grant Year 5 in September.

South African Ofce

Dr. John Hodgson, Takahiro Ohki and Karen Powell visited South Africa in mid-July for the second meeting of our South African board, to conduct the nancial audit of our South African ofces, and to assist and build capacity among local staff. While there, they were also able to hire a nance ofcer, Najendren Govender, who comes as a very welcome addition and support to the team. iMatter activity has slowed somewhat during the month of July, as we waited for the schools to reopen after a holiday. There was nevertheless some notable progress. We were able to begin the training of Master Trainers in Gauteng Province, which has been a challenge up until now. We trained Department of Education ofcials in Gauteng who will in turn have the ability to not only train teachers, but also to train other trainers. This increases the programs chances of continuing in Gauteng past our involvement.

FMP!s wave 4 began with low registration numbers, but it was completed with an overall retention rate of 92%. While recruitment remains a difculty at some sites, our managers continue to encourage the site staff to implement a fourpronged recruitment strategy, and we have seen improvements. The Orange Farm site particularly showing a 40% increase in their recruited participants for Wave 5 as compared to Wave 4. In addition to these improvements, we now have one facilitator who is certied to train new facilitators. This is a step in the right direction towards being able to certify facilitators more quickly as needed. Project AIM is still going strong, with both sites operating according to targets. We also had a training for AIM, in which 4 new facilitators were certied. This will enable us to double our reach at each of the sites.

Hygiene Matters
The search for research consultants located in both the US and Togo has been completed, and work has intensied on our evaluation protocol. The protocol will be submitted to the IRB review at the beginning of September, with implementation still intended to begin when the new academic year starts in October. The pilot will be implemented among 100,000 children, approximately 3,000 of whom will be surveyed to determine the effect that the educational component has had on knowledge, attitudes, intentions, practices and reinfection rates among program participants.

Immediate Needs
$20,000
We are very excited about Hygiene Matters and very much desire to see this program grow to its full potential. Rapidly approaching us is the training of the teachers who will use Hygiene Matters in their classrooms. We currently need a little less than $17 per teacher to cover the costs of training 1,200 teachers over the course of 2 weeks.

Highlights & Opportunities

Anna Chard for Hygiene Matters, iMatter lesson plan booklets, and HEF on Wikipedia.

Highlights
Anna Chard, a recent graduate of the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, has just joined our Hygiene Matters team as our Research Consultant. She is bringing much-needed research and data analysis skills that will enable us to accurately assess the effectiveness of the Hygiene Matters program among school children in Togo. The iMatter lesson plan booklets have been nalized and printed! This means that they will be going out to teachers to assist them in working iMatter into the strict framework of the current South African national curriculum. Last but not least, we are excited to say that Hope Education is ofcially on Wikipedia. While this may seem like a small step, it is in fact a signicant step forward in increasing Hope Educational Foundations visibility. We are very grateful to Media Connect Partners for their work on this!

FMP shows lower spending due to the fact that there are currently fewer facilitators than projected at this point in the year. Project AIM shows higher spending than expected due to the CDC training of facilitators which took place this month. Overall, we are slightly under budget for programs for the month of July.

Administrative Costs
While we are very grateful for continued donations towards specic programs, we are in need of undesignated donations to support our administrative needs. These funds are used to cover the development of new programs, grant writing, donor management and materials such as this newsletter. Without general funds, it will be impossible for Hope Education to expand according to our mission as intended. Please consider how you may be able to assist us in increasing our general funding. Contact info@hopeeducation.org for more information on how you may assist us in our efforts.

Opportunities
The grant extension application was nalized and submitted, and we are now waiting to receive notication of CDCs decision. This extension would allow us to continue FMP! and Project AIM activities until March 2014. We are continuing to work towards the establishment of iMatter Kenya, Beyond the Present in India, and Project AIM in the United States. Funding is being sought for all of these endeavors.
