He is an Associate Professor of Electrical
Engineering and Researcher in Lightning
Protection at University Putra Malaysia,
Professor of Physics at University of Colombo,
Sri Lanka, Associate Professor at Patten
University (USA) SL Branch, Visiting Professor
of Meteorology at COMSATS University, Pakistan,
Head of The Centre for Electromagnetics and
Lightning Pro tection Research, Malaysia,
Senior Advisor to the National Lightning Safety
Institution (NLSI), USA and the Team Leader of
South Asian Lightning Awareness Program (SALAP)
and an o ice bearer of many other institutions at international
level. He has pioneered in establishing lightning and EMC
research centers in many countries during the last few years.

Apart from his academic career Dr. Gomes is the Technical

As an engineering professional Dr. Gomess has experience in

Dr. Gomes obtained a First Class Degree in Physics from the
University of Colombo in 1993. He has done his PhD Degree
(1999) and postdoctoral research on lightning protection and
high voltage experiments at Uppsala University, Sweden. In
addition to lightning protection, grounding and bonding, he is
also an expert in electromagnetic compatibility, occupational
safety, atmospheric physics and research methodology. For the
last ten years he has conducted over 100 training programs on
lightning and transient protection technologies and several
other topics on electrical safety to the engineers in Saudi
Arabia, Sweden, Dubai, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan,
Pakistan, Nepal, Indonesia, Malaysia and Colombia. Dr. Gomes
has published over 100 research papers and several books on
lightning protection.
