VEGETABLE Asparagus SOURCE Peru September 13, 2013 With volume from Peru ramping up and the Fall Mexico deals starting up we should see a more stable supply of asparagus for the next several weeks. Well see markets slowly come off as field production continues to increase. We should see an improvement in sizing and quality from both regions. We are seeing a wide range in Broccoli markets overall. Markets are stronger, particularly crowns. Supplies are arriving from Canada. Quality is good. Market conditions are stable. Cauliflower markets are softer and supplies are good. Supplies and quality are good from the Michigan and California areas. Product is harvesting in New York. Demand has increased strengthening the market. Quality is good. Markets are steady and quality is fair. Product is from Michigan. Markets are steady and quality is fair. Product is from Michigan. Markets are steady and quality is improving. Supplies are from Canada and Michigan. Watercress ALERT Persistent rains curtailed harvest, but supplies are expected to increase slowly. Cilantro (California) quality and supplies are tight due to weather. All other herbs are in good supply from South America. Iceberg markets are slightly up but steady. All lettuces are showing increased quality with stronger demand being met with ample supplies. Leaf markets have softened. Romaine markets are slightly up but steady. Spring mix quality has been consistent. Supplies will improve with the quality as warmer weather spreads over the area this past week. Stable supplies of most mushrooms with good quality. Washington, Oregon and Idaho are reporting good quality and volume. Markets are stable with adequate volumes.

Quality is good with tighter supplies. Canadian and Michigan Green Pepper markets have firmed up. Colored Pepper markets remain strong. New crop potatoes are holding steady and quality is good. Markets have softened on smaller sizes. Larger sizes remain steady. Supplies are short on #2s. Red Potatoes have started in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Texas and markets are easing. Supplies are better as drier weather improves conditions. Quality issues affecting arrivals are due to summer weather. Squash markets are stable. Product is from Michigan and Georgia has started. Quality is good. Round markets remain strong. Cherry markets are gaining strength and supplies are limited. Roma markets have gained strength.

The Apple season continues with lower than average supplies especially on smaller fruit. Eastern crops have begun and are promising a 20% increase in volume over last season. Quality is good. Markets continue to strengthen with no relief expected. Quality and demand are strong. The supply has stabilized in the various growing regions. Quality is good. Markets are firm as supplies remain light. Product is from Guatemala. Demand is higher and markets are strong. Fields will transition from British Columbia to Argentina. Both quality and supplies from California and Mexico are better. Demand is stronger.
Supplies are better; however, we are seeing a wide range in markets and quality issues as fruit is weak. We recommend that you keep your inventories tight and only order what is needed. We expect improvement when areas transition into Santa Maria, followed by Oxnard.

Citrus - Grapefruit Citrus Lemons ALERT CA CA Quality is good. Supplies are better on larger sizes. All sizes and grades are limited and markets are firm as demand exceeds supply. Quality is fair at best. Light volumes of imports have started, but not enough to ease markets until the District 3 area starts up in a few weeks. Markets have eased and supplies are better; larger sized markets remain high. Overall quality is fair with color light as summer limes usually represent. Valencia Orange quality is fair. Markets have increased as smaller sizes are shorter in supply. Overall, Grape markets are stable, quality is good and demand is steady. Quality and volume are fine. Cantaloupe markets remain firm with good demand. Smaller sizes on Cantaloupe predominate. Honeydew markets are steady. Supplies are tightening as product is harvested from Indiana. Quality has improved but past rains have limited the available product. New crop Anjou will be in September. California Bosc and Bartlett have arrived. Markets are stable with quality fruit. Supplies are consistent with good quality. Brix has been averaging 13-14% with average internal gold color.
