From The Editor
4 Big Lake Chamber Community Guide 2013-14
I heard an encouraging report out of Big Lake
City offices recently.
Six single family housing permits had been
let for the past month. Nothing to brag about,
compared to those years not long ago when
the city and township were building 500-plus
homes.
But encouraging, nonetheless, because in
recent years, due to the Depression, we were seeing only one
home built per month.
Homebuilding - and all that goes into it - comprises 40% of
Big Lakes economy.
That includes owners of raw land being paid for their prop-
erty, developers stepping forward to zone and plat, engineers
to shape new roads, contractors to build those roads, the
realtors, carpenters to build the houses, electricians, HVAC
people, plumbers, concrete people, the lawns outside, floor-
ing, window treatments, paint, painters, appliances, security
systems.
Dont forget the lenders.
If you want to understand how large a whack against the
side of its economic head Big Lake (and all other similar
growing communities) have taken due to this Depression,
just stop and think about the effort our merchants have had to
put forth to climb out of that big hole.
Remarkable, I say.
Countless times I have talked with merchants over the past
few years, when they complained about having to cut costs,
cut costs, stay alive.
My response to them has always been, Make sure in the
end it is you who remains standing.
Im proud of them for their diligence, their sense of duty to
the community.
And I urge you, the customer, to give them every chance to
serve your shopping needs.
Its not the out-of-town big box whos paying taxes to send
your kids to school.
Its your local businesses. Please remind yourself of that.
Thats how communities are made - and kept.
In This Guide
Were proud to bring you another Big Lake Community
Guide, with the support and cooperation of local businesses
and organizations.
We trust you will find it interesting and informative. And if
there is a newcomer to the community who may not have
received one, pick up a copy at the banks, Chamber office or
Tribune.
Features included in this Guide include a look at city parks,
the local seniors movement and the new Legacy Foundation,
by staff writer Jennifer Edwards, the Big Lake youth football
program, by Ken Francis, and an update of the proposed Big
Lake Rail Park, by me.
Thank you for doing your share to support Big Lake.

6 Big Lake Chamber Community Guide 2013-14
The Big Lake Legacy
Foundation is an organization
dedicated to strengthening the
fabric of the Big Lake
Community, boosting local pride
and community spirit.
The organization is the brain-
child of lifelong Big Laker Doug
Hayes, who was looking for a
way to bring people together.
In the early 1900s, when Big
Lake was at a low point, the
civic leaders got together and
created an amusement park,
said Hayes. People would come
on the train from miles around to picnic at the lake, enjoy
baseball games, fish, swim, ride the carousel and dance at the
pavillion, he said.
I wanted to recreate that and one of the things which
brings people together is music, he said. I want Big Lake to
be a destination.
H a y e s
shared his
idea with
others and
soon the
new com-
mittee was
formed. Led

Dave Gast
from Klein-
Bank, John
Uphoff, Rick Schroeder from The Friendly Buffalo, Pastor Kyle
Sidlo from Saron Lutheran Church, Brad Johnson from the Big
Lake Lakes Association, City Administrator Todd Bodem,
Mayor Raeanne Danielowski, Gene Earney from the Big Lake
Lions, Laura Hayes from Big Lake Township, Big Lake
Chamber of Commerce President Tricia Skodje and others
began to meet regularly.
They first got together in March and Music in the Park, a
series of 12 concerts held in Lakeside Park was born.
Attendance at the event has been outstanding.
Based on the results, Id say we were correct, said Hayes,
who already has nine acts booked for 12 of next summers
performances.
Lakeside Park has been packed every Thursday night.
Admission is free to the concerts.
The Farmers Market is starting to grow, adding vendors and
a greater variety of merchandise.
Sometimes the parking lot is overflowing and cars have to
be parked in the old A&W lot. An evening with Bob and the
Beachcombers included an old car show. Committee mem-
bers expected 15 vehicles. Almost 60 showed up.
Residents who live around the lakes jump on their pon-
toons and head for the beach to join the fun. The Legacy Cafe
serves hot dogs or burgers, chips and pop for $3 or $10 for
four, making the evening out affordable for everyone.
But the Legacy Committees plans dont just begin and end
with a great season of music and family fun at Lakeside Park.
What really inspired me was a fascination with Big Lakes
history, said Hayes.
I thought if people knew more about Big Lake they would
be more supportive.
One of the ambitions of the Legacy Committee is to create
a walking history tour of Big Lake, so newcomers to the area,
and even some long-time residents, can find out more about
the town they live in.
Big Lake does have a long history. It is located on an
ancient trail travelled by millions over the years. The trail fol-
lows the Mississippi north to the Winnipeg area in Manitoba.
For a while it was known as the Red River Ox Cart Trail, and
the Metis, from Canada, would bring furs and other trade
goods south along the trail to trade in Minneapolis or St. Paul
for other goods. The wooden carts were noisy and could be
heard coming from miles away.
The first person to settle in the area was Joseph Brown, who
built a hotel, located about where Lake Street North is today.
Joseph was killed by a stage coach outside his hotel, but
Browns Hotel was a fixture in Big Lake for many years, even
after his death.
Another activity in the works is a Christmas tree lighting
ceremony by the outside skating rinks behind City Hall. The
rinks are being repainted, thanks to a group of volunteers led
by George Quinn and a grant from Valspar, written by Public
Works Director Mike Goebel for 90 gallons of paint.
A long term goal is the creation of a lighted ballpark com-
plex with at least four fields.
All of these activities require funds and some local busi-
nesses and organizations have been quick to respond.

This summer was amazing, said Hayes. I really want to
thank all the local businesses and people who helped to make
it come together. I was very blessed by their response.
The Legacy Foundation is still seeking donations to fund
future activities and is looking to the community for help to
make it all happen. Donations can be made at KleinBank or

Hayes. Dads are out there, dancing with their daughters and

Gridders start young in Big Lake
Every Friday night during football season, fans from all over
the state pack their local high school stands to cheer for their
team.
Many of those players probably had a long career on the
field long before they ever put on a high school football uni-
form.
In Big Lake, kids start as early as the second grade, learning
about the game while developing their skills along the way as
players in the Big Lake Youth Football Association.
On average, more than 150 kids from beginners through
eighth grade have taken part in youth football over the past
five years.
This year, there are more than 190, with 51 kids comprising
four teams in the introductory division for second and third
graders. Those kids dont travel to other areas to play. Instead,
they play against each other while learning the game.
Its tackle, but were basically just teaching them funda-
mentals - proper stances, how to block, how to tackle, says
association treasurer Patti Bottema.
Patti, who had one son go through the association and has
another playing now, says its more important for them to
learn the game than to be concerned about competing
against teams from other towns.
The coaches are on the field with them. Theyve got their
clipboards. They walk them through basic formations, she
says. If Johnny is out of line, the coach will walk out there
and actually move him into position. Its on-field coaching,
teaching them on the field. Its not that crazy die-hard com-
petitiveness that you can get.
The middle division has kids in fourth, fifth and sixth grade
playing against kids at their own grade level.
Those age groups play in the Twin City North League
against teams like Andover, St. Francis and Blaine. Back in
2009, fourth and fifth graders played together. But Patti says
that made it difficult for some of the fourth graders, especial-

Their practice begins much earlier - in mid-July with condi-
tioning, then formation practice without equipment before
putting on the pads in the second week of August.
Volunteers are an integral part of the association. Coaches,
assistant coaches and board members are all parents of the
players. No one gets paid for anything.
In the Big Lake Association, parents dont have to pay for
equipment. The association buys equipment using funds from
the Hornet Classic, a tournament that can draw a few thou-
sand players from across the Midwest. Last year the tourna-
ment drew more than 40 teams, some from Iowa, Wisconsin
and even Canada.
We brought in enough revenue that we spent over
$20,000 over the past two years just for equipment, says
Patti. A lot of associations dont provide equipment. So par-
ents are looking at another $200-plus in equipment costs for
something theyre kids are going to outgrow. It can become
very expensive.
As the kids get older, competition gets better.
Seventh graders play in the North Suburban League
against teams like Anoka, Rogers and Cooper, says Patti. Its
pretty good competition.
By seventh grade, many players have passed through the
ranks and have learned the game well enough to compete.
Everybodys learning, so by the time they get to JV and high
school they should have it down, says Patti. Hopefully,
were growing a better program for our school.

In addition to being locat-
ed close to the Sherburne
National Wildlife Refuge
and the Sand Dunes State
Forest, the City of Big Lake
has 19 parks, 14 miles of
trails and a number of green-
ways around Big Lake and
Lake Mitchell.
Some of the parks are
small, neighborhood parks
with playgrounds for chil-
dren. A few are undevel-
oped. Some are larger, with
more room for games and
activities. Many have play-
ground equipment and other
amenities, such as links to
trails.
Lakeside Park, visible from
Hwy. 10, is the crown jewel
of Big Lakes park system,
with a boat launch, fishing
dock, swimming beach, free
exercise equipment and a
skate board park. It is the
only Big Lake park with an admission fee for vehicles.
It is the home of the Big Lake Farmers Market every
Thursday from late May through October. This summer it has
also been home to Music in the Park and a number of other
events such as the Granite Man race and the Big Lake Women
of Today annual Easter egg hunt. The park admission fee does
not apply for events like these.
The most recent acquisition is the 30-acre River Oaks Park,
located on Eagle Lake Road North (Co. Rd. 5). This park is
largely undeveloped and offers easy access to the Elk River.
Presiding over the city parks is Public Works Director Mike
Goebel, who works with the city council appointed parks
committee to develop them.
Parks committee members include Janae Stern, Renee
Rossman, Katrine Nau, Scott Marotz, Eugene Earney, Denise
McDowall Seyko and City Council Liaison Nick Christenson.
Much of the parks committees funding comes from devel-
opers in the form of park dedication fees. Other funding
comes in the form of grants, gifts and donations.
The parks committee is working on a survey to find out
what residents would like to see in their parks and how they
should be developed. They also had an open house at River
Oaks Park.
In addition to amenities and the budget, the parks commit-
tee considers a number of different criteria for park develop-
ment, including what residents would like to see and the ease
and cost of maintaining the park and its equipment.
The plan for River Oaks Park is to keep it more natural,
SCOUT GARRETT MORAN
from Big Lake Troop 93 posed
for a picture by a mounted
wood duck nesting box in River
Oaks Park. (Submitted photo).

said Katrine Nau. We will probably have frisbee golf, nature
trails, a playground and river access points. We would like it
to become a canoeing destination.
Deer and wild turkeys are often seen in the park, especial-
ly in the early morning hours and at dusk. Geese, ducks and
songbirds take advantage of the wooded riverside.
In line with those plans, when Garrett Moran, an Eagle
Scout candidate with Big Lake Troop 93, was looking for a
project, he elected to do some things for River Oaks Park.
With the help of some scouting friends and parents, he
stained 19 picnic tables for the park. He applied to the Big
Lake Lions for funds to build wood duck house. Now five
wood duck houses have been constructed and placed along
the river bank.
Moran and his team also
built a bat house to encour-
age the bats, which provide
natural mosquito control.
Bats eat millions of mosqui-
tos and help to keep the pop-
ulation down.
I set that up in a quiet
place back behind some
trees, said Moran. Bats like
it quiet during the day.
There are other projects in
the works for River Oaks
Park, which was once a camp
ground. Nothing remains
from that era. Facilities cur-
rently include a satellite.
More durable restroom facili-
ties are in the works.
The parks committee,
which meets monthly, intends to apply for some grants to help
develop the park while still keeping the back-to-nature feel.
We want people to go there and check it out, said
Committee Chair Janae Stern. We want them to go and see
what is there already.
It is a nice, quiet park with lots of wildlife close to the
downtown area, said Moran. It would be a nice place to go
and have lunch.
Anyone interested in visiting one of Big Lakes parks can
find a complete, interactive map to all of them on the City of
Big Lake website. Click on the names of the parks and infor-
mation about what amenities each one contains pops up.
THE BIG LAKE PARKS COMMITTEE is dedicated to
improving the parks and trails around Big Lake. Pictured
from left to right are Public Works Director Mike Goebel,
Katrine Nau, Janae Stern, Scott Marotz, who also serves on
the planning commission, Renee Rossman, Denise McDowall
Seyko, Gene Earney and City Council Liason Nick
Christenson. (Photo by Jennifer Edwards).

This Big Lake Rail Park
By Gary W. Meyer
Editor
Supporters of the proposed Big Lake Rail Park are hoping to
have positive reports on its progress this fall.
Denied a state DTED grant in the amount of $3.29 million
this summer, they are waiting for an answer to their request
for federal startup funds.
Word from the Federal Transit Administration on a TIGER
Grant application for $3.2 million should come this fall.
The numbers are huge - because the proposed rail park is
huge in scope.
The proposed park encompasses 278 acres along the north
side of the BNSF Rail tracks stretching easterly from Midwest
Lumber to Co. Rd. 15.
Fully developed, firms within it could employ up to 2,000
people. Property tax receipts would be commensurate with
the quality of the buildings constructed, but in any case, it
could be huge.
The proposed project includes construction
of a portal (a pass through) under the Hwy. 10
overpass, 10,400 foot rail spur capable of
handling a full train off tracks, and a circular
spur extending northerly on the east side of
the overpass.
The portal construction could cost about
$710,000; the spur construction, another
$4.7 million; other infrastructure, to include
roads, electrical and rail remodeling, could
cost another $6.7 million.
About 220 of the 278 acres of property, in private hands,
lies in the city; the remainder in the township.
But the city, township and county have cooperated in a land
use measure to rezone all properties to Industrial IV, meaning
they could not be used for anything but the intended rail park.
That work has been of great importance, says
Commissioner Ewald Petersen, who helped guide it through
county channels.
Sen. Mary Kiffmeyer, who has championed the project to
the St. Paul capitol for financing at least twice, says the local
property owners are asking when the project can get going.
She accepts that as a positive thing.
So, what if the federal financing effort falls through?
Mayor Raeanne Danielowski addressed that issue, saying it
would be incumbent on the city, township and county to raise
the funds to finance the first stage of the work - the portal.
That would be the sure sign to state and federal authorities
that Big Lake officials are serious about the project.
As importantly, it would assure the railroad people there is
potential for them to help create the park, meaning more
business for them in the future.
Danielowski said BNSF drew in officials from Ft. Worth, TX,
Fargo and the Twin Cities for a meeting at Big Lake in
February to get a preview of the project.
They flew in because they were interested, Danielowski
said. But they wont get financially attached to the project
until the portal goes in.
The chicken or the egg thing, the mayor said.
(Further infrastructure, such as roads, would be the respon-
sibility of firms developing in the park.)
Unique Property
Danielowski has supported the rail park because it can be
something good that results from the railroad slicing the com-
munity in two parcels.
She says the open spaces proposed for the park could be
Big Lakes key to financial stability in the future, through
industry growth and resulting employment opportunities.
The I-94 corridor with Monticello has helped them with
business (retail). Its something we cant compete with. But a
rail industrial park is something nobody else will have.
Petersen agrees: I think it would change Sherburne
County, he said. It would bring in economic development
we now dont get a smell of.
Surrounding communities have also provided letters of sup-
port to the rail park proposal, knowing rail shipments to this
community would help businesses in theirs.
Big Lake could be a geographic hub for that growth, as
Hwys. 10, 169, 25, 101 and I-94 lie close by.
This is a game-changer for the community, said
Danielowski.
It would also be a game-changer for BNSF. The open spaces
of the proposed Big Lake park are more attractive than any
other lands along BNSF lines, from Chicago to Seattle.
For The Future
City officials have noted the inquiries coming in over the
park from possible developers. One was lost this past month,
because the park wasnt operational.
But they expect the inquiries to continue.
And Sen. Kiffmeyer expects, even if the pending federal
funding goes down, that the group remain confident and pre-
pared.
Well keep our eyes wide open, she said. We have a
wide array of support.
We need to be masters of our fate. We need to turn this
railroad into our strength.
Our strength is in rail service, said Danielowski.
Concluded Kiffmeyer: Our goal is to have jobs.
MEMBERS OF THE PARK support group met in
August to give updates on progress in securing its startup
financing. They included Laura Hayes, township clerk,
Mayor Raeanne Danielowski, Sen. Mary Kiffmeyer and Town
Chair Bob Hofer. (Photo by Gary W. Meyer)
THE ABOVE MAP shows the configuration of the
proposed Big Lake Rail Park (in blue) which extends easterly
from 172nd Street (at Midwest Lumber) to Co. Rd. 15. The
entire park space runs to the north of the BNSF Railroad.

DESIGNING FOR A BETTER TOMORROW

WELCOME TO BIG LAKE!
As the Mayor of the City of Big Lake, it is my
honor to welcome everyone to live, work and
play in a city where community matters. With
its great parks, trails, organizations, and
school district, Big Lake is a wonderful city
with a strong sense of community. Big Lake
has many opportunities for recreation and
community involvement through summer events such as
Music In The Park, Farmers Market, Spud Fest, and Fire
Department Dance, as well as winter events which include
snowmobile races and ice fishing contests. Big Lakes past
and future successes depend greatly on people volunteering
and becoming involved in the community.
The Big Lake City Council and City Staff are very support-
ive of our local businesses and encourage everyone to buy
local or think local first to enhance and bring stability to
our community. Big Lake is poised for future business growth
with our Shovel Ready industrial park site, modern waste-
water sewer treatment plant, and excellent sewer/water distri-
bution system. Also on the horizon is a possible rail park
which could potentially bring jobs into the community and
provide for the development of a 300-acre transit-oriented
development site, a historic walking tour, and a multiplex
sports facility.
I encourage everyone to visit the Citys website at
www.biglakemn.org to find out what is happening in the city
and what Big Lake has to offer.

gramming for students 4 years old through 9th grade that
includes before and after school programs, a full day
Kindergarten program, full day preschool childcare option
and programming on non-school days.
We are open from 6 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday.
During our programs we offer a wide variety of recreational
and educational activities that may include arts and crafts
projects, languages, planting and potting, and various indoor
and outdoor sports.
We have a site at Liberty Elementary School, servicing stu-
dents 4 years old to 5th grade. Our Independence Elementary
School site services students 4 years old to 9th grade. Kids
Club also offers programming during the summer for students
4 years old to 9th grade.
Summer Kids Club allows students to participate in field
trips, a variety of theme days, special events, a chance to par-
ticipate in Big Lake Summer Recreation programs and much
more. Students can attend just one day or the whole summer.
It is a great way to spend the summer.
For rates and availability, or if you have further questions
about Kids Club, please feel free to contact: Independence
Site: 763-262-7168, Liberty Site: 763-262-8284 or visit our

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) is a special pro-

ages birth to 5, as well as parenting books and videos on
every aspect of child development from prenatal through the
early years... all available for check-out. Our ECFE classes are
taught by licensed teachers whose first priority is you and your
child. Come check us out... see what ECFE has to offer you

Senior Living
Jennifer Edwards
Staff Writer
Big Lake is home to a growing number of retired people and
senior citizens, who find the community has a lot to offer.
While many are attracted to the city because of its small
town atmosphere, getting to St. Cloud or the Twin Cities is
easy, thanks to the Northstar Commuter Rail line and the
Northstar Link bus service.
Access to other towns, like Monticello and Elk River, is pro-
vided by the River Rider, a rural bus company which charges
$1.50 per ride, all their buses are handicap-accessible with
room for wheel chairs.
Seniors can find affordable housing in the area. Keller Lake
Commons on Lake Street South offers senior only apartments
and town homes.
Cherrywood offers more assistance in a home-like setting
for those who need more care. Autumn Winds is a low-
income apartment complex for seniors.
Guardian Angels out of Elk River has senior living facilities
in all ranges of care. In Monticello, St. Benedicts is an assist-
ed living facility owned by CentraCare Health, which also
runs the Monticello Nursing Home.
Big Lake has good access to health care with the
CentraCare Health Big Lake Clinic and a dialysis unit in the
Big Lake Marketplace. CentraCare Health Monticello is a crit-
ical care access hospital less than five miles away with a reha-
bilitation unit and a cancer center attached.
There are lots of activities for seniors in the Big Lake area.
The towns oldest chartered senior group meets every Tuesday
in the senior room at City Hall, to play cards, visit and cele-
brate birthdays.
Catholic Charities Senior Dining has a site at Keller Lake
Commons which serves hot, tasty and nutritious lunches
every day. They also offer meals on wheels service.
Seniors are invited to Valentines Day lunches at Saron
Lutheran Church and Thanksgiving dinner, cooked by the stu-
dents, at Big Lake High School.
Seniors are invited to join SALT, a triad of seniors and law
enforcement groups which meets twice per year, once for a
golf outing and once to share information.
Law enforcement officers from Big Lake, Elk River and
Becker join with the Sherburne County Sheriffs Dept. for a
fun and informative day out, learning about scams targeting
seniors, safety information and volunteer opportunities.
Seniors are the backbone of many local volunteer agencies,
including RSVP. Some work with the sheriffs dept. as bailiffs
in the court system, freeing up time for deputies.
The Big Lake Lioness and Big Lake Legion Auxiliary have
many seniors among their members. They organize blood
drives, dinners and Christmas activities which draw the whole
community.
CentraCare Monticello Hospital Auxiliary is made up most-
ly of retirees who run the hospital gift shop, select the mer-
chandise and staff the little store, among many other activities.
Active seniors like Wanda Nelson and Delrose Stein play
golf regularly. Nelson, now in her mid 80s, still teaches 12-
year olds the rudiments of the game at Pinewood Golf course
near Elk River.
Seniors march in the Memorial Day parade and last year it
was the seniors of the community who were honored as grand
marshals of the Spud Fest parade.
Many local establishments offer some kind of senior dis-
count.
Seniors are vital part of the Big Lake community
Seniors are celebrated in Big Lake
Choice in how to live each day to the fullest.

Call me. Making big transitions like this takes a lot of time
and planning. I work with a lot of seniors, boomers &
estates. I can recommend tradespeople who can make
affordable changes to help your home sell faster. Not all
transitional housing is an apartment or assisted living. You
have lots of options. The sooner you start, the sooner you
can sit back and breathe easier!
It May Be Time for Transitional Housing If...
...Upkeep on your yard gets put off.
...The bills dont always get paid on time.
...Taking the stairs is painful so you avoid it.
...You are seeing family less and less often.
...Falling in the shower or tub is a concern so your hygiene suffers.
...Cooking for yourself rarely happens anymore.
