The Sentiments of John Weley

I am to how that it is the duty of every Chritian to receive the Lords Supper as often as he can. Firt, that if we conider the Lords Supper as a command of Chrit, no man can have any pretene to Chritian piety, who does not receive it (not once a month but) as often as he can. Secondly, that if we conider the intitution of it, as a mercy to ourelves, no man who does not receive it as often as he can has any pretene to Chritian prudence. Thirdly, that none of the objections uually made, can be any excue for that man who does not, at every opportunity, obey this command and accept this mercy. I BELIEVE there is no LITURGY in the world, either in ancient or modern language, which breathes more of a olid, criptural, rational piety, than the COMMON PRAYER of the CHURCH of ENGLAND: and though the main of it was compiled coniderably more than two hundred years ago, yet is the language of it not only pure, but trong and elegant in the highet degree. I myelf find more life in the Church Prayers, than in any formal extemporary prayers of Dienters. Nor is it expedient for any Methodit Preacher to imitate the Dienters in their manner of praying; either in his tone, all particular tones both in prayer and preaching hould be avoided with the utmot care; nor in his language, all his words hould be plain and imple, uch as the lowet of his hearers both ue and undertand; or in the length of his prayer, which hould not uually exceed four or five minutes, either before or after ermon. And we advie every one who preaches in the church hours to read the Palms and Leons, with part of the Church Prayers; because we apprehend this will endear the Church ervice to our brethren, who probably would be prejudiced against it, if they heard none but extemporary prayer. 5

AN ORDER for Midnight Prayer, at the Vigils. At midnight, having risen from thy bed, thou shalt bless thyself with the Holy Cross, saying: In the name of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall show forth thy praise. O God, make speed to deliver me; O LORD, make haste to help me. Glory be to Father, &c. As it was in the beginning, &c. Hallelujah! The Lords name be praised. Then shall Psalm 95 be recited, and the Gloria Patri afterwards. Then, this hymn shall be sung: Ye watchers and ye holy ones, Bright seraphs, cherubhim and thrones, Raise the glad strain, Alleluia! Cry out, dominions, princedoms, powers, Virtues, archangels, angels' choirs: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! O higher than the cherubhim, More glorious than the seraphim, Lead their praises, Alleluia! Thou bearer of th'eternal Word, Most gracious, magnify the Lord. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Respond, ye souls in endless rest, Ye patriarchs and prophets blest, Alleluia! Alleluia! Ye holy twelve, ye martyrs strong, All saints triumphant, raise the song. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! O friends, in gladness let us sing, Supernal anthems echoing, Alleluia! Alleluia! To God the Father, God the Son, And God the Spirit, Three in One. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Then shall Psalms 90, 119:57-64 & 134 be recited, each followed by the Gloria Patri. And then shall Acts 16:16-34 & Matthew 26:36-44 be read, after which shall the Kyrie eleison be said and the Pater Noster be sung, after which shall follow this prayer; Abba, B'yad'cha af'qid ruhi . Amen. Which meaneth, Father, Into thy hand I commend my spirit. Then one returns to sleep. 7

O Lord, open thou my lips; &c. O God, &c. Glory be to Father, &c. As it was in the beginning, &c. Hallelujah! The Lords name be praised. Then this hymn shall be sung: When morning gilds the skies my heart awaking cries: May Jesus Christ be praised! Alike at work and prayer, to Jesus I repair: May Jesus Christ be praised! The night becomes as day when from the heart we say: May Jesus Christ be praised! The powers of darkness fear when this sweet chant they hear: May Jesus Christ be praised! No lovelier antiphon in all high Heavn is known Than, Jesus Christ be praised! There to the eternal Word the eternal psalm is heard: May Jesus Christ be praised! In Heavns eternal bliss the loveliest strain is this, May Jesus Christ be praised! Let earth, and sea and sky from depth to height reply, May Jesus Christ be praised! Be this, while life is mine, my canticle divine: May Jesus Christ be praised! Sing this eternal song through all the ages long: May Jesus Christ be praised! Then shall follow the Psalms in order as they be appointed in order: on the Lords Day, Psalms 113, 24 & 117; on Monday, Psalms 117, 48 & 8

135; on Tuesday, Psalm 135, 82 & 147; on Wednesday, Psalms 147, 94 & 148; on Thursday, Psalms 148, 81 & 149; on Friday, Psalms 149, 93 & 150; and on Shabbath, Psalms 150, 92 & 113. After each Psalm shall the Gloria Patri be recited or sung. And then shall be read distinctly with an audible voice the First Lesson of Morning Prayer, taken out of the Old Testament, as is appointed in the Calendar, except there be proper Lessons assigned for that day : One that readeth so standing and turning oneself, as one may best be heard of all such as are present. Then shall be said the Sh'ma Yisrael. EAR, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD. After which shall be read distinctly with an audible voice the Second Lesson of Morning Prayer from the New Testament. Then shall be said the Apostles' Creed. BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholick Church; The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body, And the Life everlasting. Amen. Then shall be said the Kyrie eleison: Lord, have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord, have mercy. And then shall be sung: UR FATHER which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. 9

Then shall follow three Collects; the first being the Morning Prayer of Martin Luther; The second for Peace; The third for Grace to live well. These three Collects shall never alter, but daily be said at Morning Prayer throughout all the year, as followeth, all kneeling. The first Collect, for Protection E thank thee, our heavenly Father, that thou this past night hast guarded us from all harm and danger; and so we beseech thee that thou wilt protect this day even us from sins and evil, and that all our doings and our lives may be pleasing unto thee. For we commit ourselves, our bodies and souls, and all in thy hands; may thy Holy Angel be with us so that the evil enemy will find no power over us; through Jesus Christ, thy beloved Son. Amen. The second Collect, for Peace. GOD, who art the author of peace and lover of concord, in knowledge of whom standeth our eternal life, whose service is perfect freedom; Defend us thy humble servants in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in thy defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries, through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The third Collect, for Grace. LORD, our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day; Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by thy governance, to do always that is righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Then followeth this hymn: Be thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that thou art. Thou my best Thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. Be thou my Shield and my Sword for the fight; Be thou my Dignity and my Delight; Thou my souls Shelter and my high Tower: Raise thou me heavenward, O Power of my power. 10

Riches I heed not, nor mans empty praise, Thou mine Inheritance, now and always: Thou and thou only, first in my heart, High King of Heaven, my Treasure thou art. High King of Heaven, my victory won, May I reach Heavens joys, O bright Heavens Sun! Heart of mine own heart, whatever befall, Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all. AN ORDER for Mid-morning Prayer, at Terce. At mid-morning, thou shalt stand and bless thyself with the Holy Cross, saying: In the name of God the Father, &c. O Lord, open thou my lips; &c. O God, &c. Glory be to Father, &c. As it was in the beginning, &c. Hallelujah! The Lords name be praised. Then shall follow the Psalms in order as they be appointed: on the Lords Day, Psalm 119:1-24; on Monday, Psalm 119:25-48; on Tuesday, Psalm 119:49-72; on Wednesday, Psalm 119:73-96; on Thursday, Psalm 119:97-120; on Friday, Psalm 119:121-144; and on Shabbath, Psalm 119:145-176. After eight verses of each Psalm portion shall the Gloria Patri be recited. Then the lesson from 2 Thessalonians 3:6-16. And then shall be sung the Pater Noster, after which shall follow the Prayer of Sir Jacob Astley. ORD, thou knowest how busy I must be this day. If I forget thee, do not forget me. Amen.

Then shall follow these three Psalms in order as they be appointed every day of the year: Psalms 54, 55 & 91, the Gloria Patri being recited or sung after each Psalm. Then the lesson from St. Matthew 4:1-11. And then shall be sung the Pater Noster, & this prayer: GOD, whose nature and property is ever to have mercy and to forgive, receive our humble petitions; and though we be tied and bound with the chain of our sins, yet let the pitifulness of thy great mercy loose us. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those, who are any ways afflicted, or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; [*especially those for whom our prayers are desired;] that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them, according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ his sake. Amen.

ATHER, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy child. LORD Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me and remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. HOLY Spirit, help me in mine infirmities, for I know not what I should pray for as I ought; intercede thou for me, I beseech thee, with groanings which cannot be uttered. God be merciful to me a sinner. Amen. 12

AN ORDER for Evensong, at Vespers. In the evening, thou shalt stand facing Jerusalem and bless thyself with the Holy Cross, saying: In the name of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. A general Confession to be said by all those present, all kneeling. LMIGHTY AND MOST MERCIFUL FATHER; WE HAVE ERRED, AND STRAYED FROM THY WAYS LIKE LOST SHEEP. WE HAVE
FOLLOWED TOO MUCH THE DEVICES AND DESIRES OF OUR OWN HEARTS. WE HAVE OFFENDED AGAINST THY HOLY LAWS. WE HAVE LEFT UNDONE THOSE THINGS WHICH WE OUGHT TO HAVE DONE; AND WE HAVE DONE THOSE THINGS WHICH WE OUGHT NOT TO HAVE DONE; AND THERE IS NO HEALTH IN US. BUT THOU, O LORD, HAVE MERCY UPON US, MISERABLE OFFENDERS. SPARE THOU THEM, O GOD, WHO CONFESS THEIR FAULTS. RESTORE THOU THOSE WHO ARE PENITENT; ACCORDING TO THY PROMISES DECLARED UNTO MANKIND IN CHRIST JESU OUR LORD. AND GRANT, O MOST MERCIFUL FATHER, FOR HIS SAKE; THAT WE MAY HEREAFTER LIVE A GODLY, RIGHTEOUS, AND SOBER LIFE, TO THE GLORY OF THY HOLY NAME. AMEN.

Arbhith

Then the Pastor shall say: O LORD, we beseech thee, absolve thy people from their offences ; that through thy bountiful goodness, we may be delivered from the bands of those sins, which by our frailty we have committed. Grant this, O heavenly Father, for Jesus Christ's sake, our blessed Lord and Saviour. Amen. Then shall be said: O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall show forth thy praise. O God, make speed to deliver me; O LORD, make haste to help me. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Hallelujah! The Lords name be praised. Then this hymn shall be sung (except in Advent and Lent): 13

Now, on land and sea descending, Brings the night its peace profound; Let our vesper hymn be blending With the holy calm around. Jubilate! Jubilate! Jubilate! Amen! Let our vesper hymn be blending With the holy calm around. Soon as dies the sunset glory, Stars of heaven shine out above, Telling still the ancient story, Their Creator's changeless love. Jubilate! Jubilate! Jubilate! Amen! Telling still the ancient story, Their Creator's changeless love. Now, our wants and burdens leaving To God's care who cares for all, Cease we fearing, cease we grieving, Touched by God our burdens fall. Jubilate! Jubilate! Jubilate! Amen! Cease we fearing, cease we grieving, Touched by God our burdens fall. As the darkness deepens o'er us Lo! eternal stars arise; Hope and faith and love rise glorious, Shining in the Spirit's skies. Jubilate! Jubilate! Jubilate! Amen! Hope and faith and love rise glorious, Shining in the Spirit's skies. Christ, to thee with God the Father, And, O Holy Ghost, to thee, Hymn and chant with high thanksgiving, And unwearied praises be: Jubilate! Jubilate! Jubilate! Amen! Hymn and chant with high thanksgiving, And unwearied praises be. Or this hymn be sung during Advent and Lent: Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me. Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; Earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see; O Thou who changest not, abide with me. Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word, But as thou dwell'st with thy disciples, Lord, Familiar, condescending, patient, free. Come not to sojourn, but abide with me. Come not in terrors, as the King of kings, 14

But kind and good, with healing in thy wings; Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea. Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me. Thou on my head in early youth didst smile, And though rebellious and perverse meanwhile, Thou hast not left me, oft as I left thee. On to the close, O Lord, abide with me. I need thy presence every passing hour. What but thy grace can foil the tempter's power? Who, like thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. I fear no foe, with thee at hand to bless; Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness. Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if Christ abides with me. Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies. Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee; In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. Then shall be sung the 23rd Psalm, The Lords my Shepherd, Ill not want. He makes me down to lie In pastures green; he leadeth me The quiet waters by. My soul he doth restore again; And me to walk doth make Within the paths of righteousness, Even for his own Names sake. Yea, though I walk in deaths dark vale, Yet will I fear no ill; For thou art with me; and thy rod And staff my comfort still. My table thou hast furnishd In presence of my foes; My head thou dost with oil anoint, And my cup overflows. Goodness and mercy all my life Shall surely follow me; And in Gods house forevermore My dwelling place shall be. All glory be to God, the Father, Son and Holy Ghost; I bless thy name with all on earth and with the heav'nly host. 15

Then a Lesson of the Old Testament, as is appointed. And after that Magnificat (or the Song of the blessed Virgin Mary):.

16

Then a Lesson of the New Testament, as it is appointed. And afterwards Psalm 67, after which will the Gloria Patri be recited. Then the Sh'ma Yisrael shall be recited and then shall the Pastor say: NEW commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. Then shall be sung the following Affirmation of Faith. We believe in one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Ever present help in need, praised by all the heavenly host; By whose mighty power alone all is made and wrought and done. We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Marys Son, Who descended from His throne and for us salvation won; By whose cross and death are we rescued from sins misery. We confess the Holy Ghost, who from both forever proceeds; Who upholds and comforts us in all trials, fears and needs. Blessed and Holy Trinity, praise forever be to thee! Then shall be said the Kyrie eleison and be sung the Pater Noster, after which shall follow three Collects; the first being the Evening Prayer of Martin Luther; The second for Peace; The third for Aid against all Perils, as hereafter followeth : which two last Collects shall be daily said at Evening Prayer without alteration, all kneeling. The first Collect, for Protection E thank thee, our heavenly Father, that thou this day graciously have protected us, and so we ask that thou wilt keep forgiving all our sins, where we have done wrong, and this night also graciously protect us. For we commit ourselves, our bodies and souls, and all in thy hands; may thy Holy Angel be with us so that the evil enemy will find no power over us; through Jesus Christ, thy beloved Son. Amen. The Second Collect at Evening Prayer. GOD, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of 17

our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. The Third Collect, for Aid against all Perils. IGHTEN our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. Then followeth this hymn: The day is past and over; All thanks, O Lord, to thee! We pray thee that offenseless The hours of dark may be. O Jesus, keep us in thy sight, And guard us through the coming night. The joys of day are over; We lift our hearts to thee, And call on thee that sinless The hours of dark may be. O Jesus, make our darkness light, And guard us through the coming night. Lord, that in death I sleep not, And lest my foe should say, I have prevailed against him, Lighten mine eyes, I pray: O Jesus, keep me in thy sight, And guard me through the coming night. The toils of day are over; We raise our hymn to thee, And ask that free from peril The hours of dark may be. O Jesus, keep us in thy sight, And guard us through the coming night. Be thou our souls Preserver, O God, for thou dost know How many are the perils Through which we have to go. Lord Jesus Christ, O hear our call And guard and save us from them all. A Prayer for the Clergy and People. LMIGHTY and everlasting God, who alone workest great marvels; Send down upon our Bishops, and Curates, and all Congregations committed to their charge, the healthful Spirit of thy grace; and that they may truly please thee, pour upon them the continual dew of thy blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our Advocate and Mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen. 18

AMEN.

Prayer For Pardon Pastor: ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of thy great mercy hast promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto thee; Have mercy upon us; pardon and deliver us from all our sins; confirm and strengthen us in all goodness; and bring us to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Then shall all rise. Hear what words of comfort our Saviour Christ saith unto all that truly turn to him, Comfortable Words for the Eve of & the Lords Day Pastor: Verily, verily, I say unto you, one that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 23

Comfortable Words for the Rest of the Week Pastor: For if you forgive people their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Words of Comfort for the Eve of Shabbath Pastor: Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Qiddush, For the Eve of Shabbat & the Eve of The Lords Day
The Pastor, (the Bread remaining covered) shall put wine into the Chalice, putting thereto a little pure and clean water. Then shall follow the Sanctification of the Day, the Pastor lifting the Chalice,

Pastor: Blessed art thou, the Lord our God, King of the Universe, Creator of the fruit of the vine; We give thee thanks, O our Father, for the holy vine of thy son David, which thou madest known unto us through thy Son Jesus Christ, our Lord. ALL: THINE IS THE GLORY FOR EVER AND EVER. AMEN.
Then shall all drink from the Chalice. And the Pastor shall then offer up, and uncover the bread and pour the wine prepared for the sacrament upon the Lord's Table, putting a little pure water into the Chalice: and shall say,

The Great Thanksgiving The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Answer. And with thy spirit. Pastor. Lift up your hearts. Answer. We lift them up unto the Lord. Pastor. Let us give thanks to our Lord God. Answer. It right and just. Pastor: We give thanks unto thee, 0 Lord (Holy Father), Almighty, Everlasting God. for the life and knowledge which thou didst make known unto us (through thy Son Jesus Christ); Answer. Thine is the glory for ever and ever. Pastor: Therefore, with the Cherubhim and the Seraphim, and with all the Angels and Archangels of heaven, we praise thee, and singing, 24

Prayer of Consecration Pastor: Holy art thou, and blessed is thy Son who cometh in thy Holy Name. Glory be to thee, 0 God our heavenly Father, which of thy tender mercy didst love the world, that thou gavest thine only begotten Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption, who made there (by his oblation once offered) a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world, and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, to celebrate a perpetual memory of that his precious death, until his coming again, so that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life; according to Christ's word and promise, when he saith, that where two or three are gathered together in his name, there he be in the midst of them, so that whoso eateth his flesh, and drinketh his blood hath eternal life, and will be raised by Christ thy Son at the last day, (and one that eateth his flesh, and drinketh his blood, dwelleth in Christ, and Christ in the same). 25

Hear us we beseech thee; and with thy Holy Spirit and Word, vouchsafe to bl ess and sanc tify these thy gifts, and creatures of br ead and wi ne, that they may be unto us the bo dy and blo od of thy most dearly beloved Son Jesus Christ. Who in the same night that he was betrayed: 1took bread, and when he had blessed, and had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

ALL: BLESSED ART THOU, LORD OUR GOD, KING OF THE UNIVERSE, WHO BRINGEST FORTH BREAD FROM THE EARTH. Pastor: Likewise after supper he 2took the cup of blessing, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying:

ALL: BLESSED ART THOU, LORD OUR GOD, KING OF THE UNIVERSE, CREATOR OF THE FRUIT OF THE VINE. Pastor: WHEREFORE, O Lord and heavenly Father, according to the Institution of thy dearly beloved Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, we thy humble servants do celebrate, and make here before thy divine Majesty, with these thy holy gifts, the memorial which thy Son hath willed us to make, having in remembrance his blessed passion, mighty resurrection, and glorious ascension, rendering unto thee most hearty thanks, for the innumerable benefits procured unto us by the same, And, although we be unworthy (through our manifold sins) to offer unto thee any Sacrifice, here we offer and present unto thee (0 Lord) our selves, our souls, and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and lively sacrifice unto thee. As this broken bread was scattered upon the mountains and being gathered together became one, and as this cup of blessing was scattered upon the fields and being trodden together became one, so may thy Church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into thy kingdom and become one.

Here the Pastor must take the Bread into his hands. Here the Pastor shall take the Cup into his hands.

26

For thine, our Father, is the glory and the power through Jesus Christ ALL: AMEN. in the unity of the Holy Ghost for ever and ever. Pastor: AS our savior Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to pray. ALL: OUR FATHER WHICH ART IN HEAVEN, HALLOWED BE THY NAME. THY KINGDOM COME. THY WILL BE DONE IN EARTH, AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD. AND FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS, AS WE FORGIVE OUR DEBTORS. AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION, BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL: FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM AND THE POWER AND THE GLORY FOR EVER. AMEN. Prayer of Humble Access
Then shall the pastor, kneeling down at the table, say in the name of all them that shall receive the Communion this prayer following; the People also kneeling.

WE do not presume to come to this thy table, O merciful Lord Jesus Christ, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy that thou shouldest come under our roof: nor are we worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy table as little dogs: but thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy; but speak the word only, and we thy servants shall be healed. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat thy fle sh and to drink thy blo od in these holy Mysteries, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by thy body, and our souls washed through thy most precious blood. [The Prayer of Hezekiah (for the unbaptized). To be prayed when there be pardon every one that prepareth ones heart to seek God, though one be not cleansed according to the purification of the sanctuary.]
present any who have not been baptized into the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, that they may partake of the Eucharist. The good LORD

[Spiritual Communion. If for want of time or by any other just impediment, one

cannot receive the Sacrament of Christ's Body and Blood, one may pray soon after the Words of Comfort the Pater Noster & these words: OUR Lord Jesus

Christ, we do truly repent of our sins, and steadfastly believe that thou both suffered death upon the Cross for us, and shed thy Blood for our redemption. We love thee above all things and we desire thee in our souls. Grant, we beseech thee, that earnestly remembering thy benefits 27

unto us with hearty thanksgiving, we may eat thy Body and drink thy Blood profitably to our souls' health, although we do not receive the Sacrament with our mouths. We are not worthy that thou shouldest come under our roof but speak the word only, and we thy servants shall be healed. Come at least spiritually into our hearts. Then to the hymn.] Agnus Dei ALL: AMEN. O LAMB OF GOD, THAT TAKEST AWAY THE SINS OF THE WORLD: HAVE MERCY UPON US. O LAMB OF GOD, THAT TAKEST AWAY THE SINS OF THE WORLD: HAVE MERCY UPON US. O LAMB OF GOD, THAT TAKEST AWAY THE SINS OF THE WORLD: GRANT US THY PEACE. Or the following may be sung after the Amen on
the Eve of Shabbath, the Eve of the Lords Day and on the Lords Day itself:

The Communion Rite Pastor: The peace of the Lord be always with you. Answer. And with thy spirit. Pastor: THE body of our Lord Jesus Christ which was given for thee, preserve thy body and soul unto everlasting life. The bread which we break, is the communion of the body of Christ. For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. 28

THE blood of our Lord Jesus Christ which was shed for thee, preserve thy body and soul unto everlasting life. The cup of blessing which we bless, is the communion of the blood of Christ, which cleanseth us from all sin, purging our consciences from dead works to serve the living God.
Then shall the Pastor first receive the Communion in both kinds himself, and then proceed to deliver the same to the others, or the Pastor may receive the bread and wine last.

Thanksgiving After the Meal Pastor: ALMIGHTY and everliving GOD, Holy Father, which by thy holy Apostle hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men: we most heartily thank thee for thy holy Name, which thou hast made to tabernacle in our hearts, and for the knowledge and faith and immortality, which thou hast made known unto us through thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; Answer. Thine is the glory for ever and ever. Pastor: Thou, Almighty Master, didst create all things for thy name's sake, and didst give food and drink unto people for enjoyment, that they might render thanks to thee; but didst vouchsafe to feed us, who have duly received these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food and drink of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and hast assured us (duly receiving the same) of thy favour and goodness towards us. Before all things we give thee thanks that thou art powerful; Answer. Thine is the glory for ever and ever. Pastor: Remember, Lord, thy Church to deliver it from all evil and to perfect it in thy love; and gather it together from the four windseven the Church which has been sanctifiedinto thy kingdom which thou hast prepared for it. Give grace (O heavenly Father) to all Bishops, Pastors, and Curates, that they may both by their life and doctrine set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments: and to all thy people give thy heavenly grace, that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear, and receive thy Holy Word, truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life; Answer. For thine is the glory for ever and ever. 29

Pastor: We therefore most humbly beseech thee, 0 heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works, as thou hast prepared for us to walk in: And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear; beseeching thee to give us grace so to follow their good examples, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom: May grace come and may this world pass away. Answer. Hosanna to the God of David. Pastor: If any one is holy, let that one come; if any one is not, let that one repent; And we most humbly beseech thee of thy goodness (O Lord) to comfort and succour all them, which in this transitory life be in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, world without end. ALL. MARANATHA! AMEN.
Then followeth this hymn (to be sung after either the Prayer of Thanksgiving or after the Prayer of Spiritual Communion):

All praise to thee, my God, this night, For all the blessings of the light! Keep me, O keep me, King of kings, Beneath thine own almighty wings. Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son, The ill that I this day have done, That with the world, myself, and thee, I, ere I sleep, at peace may be. Teach me to live, that I may dread The grave as little as my bed. Teach me to die, that so I may Rise glorious at the judgment day. O may my soul on thee repose, And with sweet sleep mine eyelids close, Sleep that may me more vigorous make To serve my God when I awake. When in the night I sleepless lie, My soul with heavenly thoughts supply; Let no ill dreams disturb my rest, No powers of darkness me molest. Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
And then the Pastor, if he see it expedient, may either put up a prayer extempore; or he may pray the following collect if pressed for time;

30

Pastor: ALMIGHTY GOD, the fountain of all wisdom, which hast promised to hear the petitions of them that ask in thy Son's name, who knowest our necessities before we ask, and our ignorance in asking: we beseech thee mercifully to incline thine ears to us that have made now our prayers and supplications unto thee, and grant that those things which we have faithfully asked according to thy will, may effectually be obtained to the relief of our necessity, and to the setting forth of thy glory: we beseech thee to have compassion upon our infirmities, and those things, which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask, vouchsafe to give us for the worthiness of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ALL. LORD, NOW LETTEST THOU THY SERVANT DEPART IN PEACE: ACCORDING TO THY WORD. FOR MINE EYES HAVE SEEN: THY SALVATION, WHICH THOU HAST PREPARED: BEFORE THE FACE OF ALL PEOPLE; TO BE A LIGHT TO LIGHTEN THE GENTILES; AND TO BE THE GLORY OF THY PEOPLE ISRAEL. GLORY BE TO THE FATHER, &C. AS IT WAS IN THE BEGINNING, &C. AMEN.
Then the Pastor pronounce this blessing.

Pastor: THE peace of GOD (which passeth all understanding) keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of GOD, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you and remain with you always. ALL.

Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. Amen.
Then may follow the Pater Noster if desired, after which shall follow this prayer;

Abba, b'yad'cha af'qid ruhi . Which meaneth, Father, Into thy hand I commend my spirit. Amen. Thus endeth the order of the Daily Office, through the whole year. 31
