Allstate and the Tom Joyner Foundation Partnering to Raise $150,000 for Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Show your school pride by getting a quote now and Allstate will donate $10 to the Tom Joyner Foundation to support students at HBCUs. Then vote to help your favorite HBCU win a $50,000 donation from Allstate.

Allstate and the Tom Joyner Foundation are asking alumni, students and supporters of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country to do their part to raise scholarship funds as part of the fifth annual Allstate Quotes for Education program. For every person who receives an insurance quote from a participating Allstate agent and mentions Quotes for Education between August 1 and Nov. 30, 2013, Allstate will donate $10, up to a total donation of $150,000. The funds will be donated to The Tom Joyner Foundation and earmarked for general scholarship funds to assist students attending HBCUs. For the third year, participants in this program will also have a chance to vote for the HBCU of their choice to receive an additional $50,000 donation for scholarships. "We know that cuts to student loan programs over the past few years are hurting students all over the country, but these cuts are particularly detrimental to students attending HBCUs," said Cheryl Harris, senior vice president at Allstate. "Allstate and The Tom Joyner Foundation are passionate about helping these students pursue their dreams as we continue to support programs like Quotes for Education." HBCUs are part of my DNA, and my foundation is dedicated to helping students complete their college degrees," said Tom Joyner, chairman and founder of the 15-year-old foundation. "Every dollar raised will go a long way to invest in these students' dreams and careers."

Academic Enrichment Guidelines (AEP)
To students registered for Academic Enrichment

The following guidelines should be adhered to if you desire a grade for Academic Enrichment: 1. To receive a grade for Academic Enrichment, you must be registered. Please check the class list in the Dean of Students Office to make sure you are registered for the course. If your name does not appear on the class list, please go to the Registrars Office to register. Students earn AEP points by attending assemblies and participating in other AEP approved events (Lyceum programs, Sunday school, etc.) 2. AEP cards are not issued to students after 2:50 p.m. during weekly assemblies. If you are late due to a conference with an instructor, a statement from the instructor is required. 3. Students are not permitted to stand in the doorway or sit in the aisles or on the steps. 4. Sleeping is not allowed during assembly and other AEP events. Students must sit up and be attentive. 5. DRESS CODE FOR ATTENDING ASSEMBLY: Males should wear suits with shirt and tie or slacks with a shirt and tie. Females should wear business attire (suits, dresses, or pants suits). Blue jeans, jogging suits, hot pants, short shorts, sneakers, or halter tops should not be worn by anyone. Males should remove their hats/headrags before entering the auditorium. Students who are not properly dressed will not be given an AEP card, nor will they be permitted to enter the auditorium while assembly is being conducted. This policy will be strictly enforced. NO EXCEPTIONS. 6. Loitering in the lobby is not allowed. If you are not attending the program, you must vacate the venue. Cards will only be accepted from students in attendance. Each student should turn in his or her own card. If two cards are turned in, neither will be accepted. 7. If you are a participant in an AEP program, you must pick up your card before the event begins. Cards will not be issued after the program is over. Please print your name on your card. 8. If you leave before the program is over, you will not be given credit for that date. Students leaving the program for practice of any kind without prior approval will not be given credit. 9. The grading system is as follows: Semester Attendance 15 points = A 12-14 points = B 9-11 points = C 6-8 points = D 5 or below = F

Students who register for the second module or fourth module must accumulate the required points to be given credit for the semester.

10. If you miss assembly due to illness, please submit a doctors statement to the Dean of Students Office. All excuses must be turned in before grades are completed. Academic Enrichment is a requirement. All students must complete and pass four (4) semesters of Academic Enrichment to graduate. If you receive an F for any semester, you must repeat that semester. If you are unsure of the number of semesters of AEP you have completed, please check your transcript in the Registrars Office.

President Obama: Making Higher Education More Affordable for the Middle Class
During his weekly address, President Barack Obama proposed major new reforms to make college more affordable for middle class families and those fighting to get into the middle class. We cannot price the middle class out of a college education. Thats why I proposed major new reforms to make college more affordable and make it easier for folks to pay for their education, President Obama said. First, were going to start rating colleges based on opportunity are they helping students from all kinds of backgrounds succeed, and on outcomes their value to students and parents. In time, well use those ratings to make sure that the colleges that keep their tuition down are the ones that will see their taxpayer funding go up. Second, were going to jumpstart competition between colleges over innovations that help more students graduate in less time, at less cost, while maintaining quality. A number of schools are already testing new approaches, like putting more courses online or basing course credit on competence, not just hours spent in the classroom. And third, were going to help more students responsibly manage their debt, by making more of them eligible for a loan repayment program called Pay-As-You-Earn, which caps your loan payments at ten percent of what you make. And well reach out directly to students to make sure they know that this program exists. President Obama said he realizes these new reforms will not be popular with everyone, but the path were on now is unsustainable for our students and our economy.

Social Work Program Director Receives National Appointment

Dr. Gemma D. Beckley, professor of Social Work and Chair of the Rust College Social Work program has been appointed to the Commission of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in Washington, D.C. CSWE is the U.S. Department of Education approved agency for accrediting college and university schools of Social Work. As a commissioner, Dr. Beckley will work with fellow commissioners in reviewing applications from schools throughout the United States seeking reaffirmation of the social work programs accreditation, as well as schools seeking recognition from the Council for initial accreditation. In 2000, Dr. Beckley led the Rust College faculty in gaining full accreditation of the Rust College Social Work program. Prior to returning to Rust College in 1991, Dr. Beckley was Director of the Masters program in Social Work at Grambling State University in Louisiana, Program Director with the ChilDr. Gemma D. Beckley drens Defense Fund in Washington, D.C., Social Work faculty member at the University of Mississippi, University of Tennessee and Wiley College. During the 2005-2007 academic years, Dr. Beckley served as visiting professor at Fordham University in New York in the School of Public Service. Dr. Beckley holds degrees from Dillard University in New Orleans, Atlanta University in Atlanta, a Masters of Social Work and the Doctorate of Social Work from Columbia University in New York. Dr. Beckley says she is very excited about this appointment, as she is the first appointed member from a Mississippi private college. I look forward to working with other commissioners in carrying out the process of assuring quality in Social Work programs throughout the country, she said. Other CSWE-approved programs in Mississippi are Jackson State University, Mississippi Valley State University, University of Mississippi and University of Southern Mississippi.

Parking Permits are available for purchase NOW! ALL VEHICLES MUST BE REGISTERED BY SEPTEMBER 13, 2013 You will need your Insurance Information and License Plate number! Parking permits may be secured in the Office of the Vice President for College Relations located on the 1st Floor of the McCoy Administration Building, across from the Presidents Office. If you have a Rust College Vanity Plate on your vehicle, you will not have to pay for the parking permit for that vehicle, but you must bring your vanity registration to secure your parking permit at no cost. Parking permits for other vehicles will cost $10.00 for the first vehicle and $1.00 for each additional vehicle. Faculty/Staff ONLY Reserved Parking is $50.00 without vanity plate and $40.00 with vanity plate. All Students operating a vehicle on campus (residing or commuting) must register vehicle with the Dean of Students Office in order the purchase a permit. Student permits are $5.00. All Faculty/Staff and Students operating a vehicle on campus are REQUIRED to purchase parking permits.
