Introduction to Homeopathy
Homeopathy takes a different approach to disease and remedies than that of conventional or
“allopathic” medicine. In the conventional approach, medicines are used that work against diseases
and their symptoms. A homeopathic medicines are used that work against diseases and their
symptoms, A homeopathic medicine is one that is capable of natural healing capacity, acting as a
trigger to the body to use its own resources to restore balance and health.

A Brief History Homeopathy

Homeopathy has existed for almost 200 years. Homeopathic practitioners have over 200 remedies
available to them, although most use less than 100 of these to treat current diseases.

Homeopathy was developed by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) although some credit must go
to Paracelsus, born around 1493, who put forward the theory. History tells us that Hahnemann was
translating a scientific paper by William Cullen, a Scottish physician, on his theory why Cinchona
bark (a source of quinine and popular at the time) was successful in treating Malaria. Hahnemann
found that he disagreed entirely with the findings. In his youth he had travelled in a particular area
of Hungary where Marsh Fever or Malaria had been rife. He had used the herb, Cinchina Bark, but
his experience did not support the conclusion of Cullen’s paper. He decided to carry out some
experiments of his own.

A Human Guinea Pig

First he took a dose of the herb himself and he found that he developed symptoms very much like
Marsh Fever. He realized that the cure of the disease could cause the symptoms of the disease. He
tried it on his family, friends, and volunteers and they all developed the same sort of symptoms. He
experimented with this one drug on many people and the majority of them told the same story.

Like Cures Like

So he developed the principle that a substance which will create the symptoms of a disease in a
healthy person will actually cure the symptoms of the disease in a sick person. Hahnemann called this
principle “similia similibus curentur” or “let like be cured by like”. He went on to “prove”, as it is called,
some 67 remedies on his many healthy students, family and friends. His findings were published
in Materia Medica of 1810. Many of the substances Hahnemann used were highly poisonous. For
example arsenic and mercury, and to avoid the toxic effect, he experimented with smaller and smaller
doses. By experimentation, he found that successive dilutions of a substance became progressively
more medicinally active, and less toxic.

Homeopathic Medicine Potency or Dilution
Homeopathic medicine are micro-dosed natural substances derived from botanical, animal or mineral
sources. A specific homeopathic medicine dilution is obtained by a precise and controlled process
of successive “homeopathic dilution”. The medicine is diluted or deconcentrated and then vigorously
shaken, traditionally referred to as succussion. This process transform the original substance into a
therapeutically active medicine.
Many, new to homeopathy, mistake potency or dilution with strength. There is actually no correlation
between potency and the strength of a homeopathic medicine. A homeopathic medicine at 30C
potency is not stronger than the same medicine at 6C or 3C. The difference is in their action. While
a 6C potency is better suited for a local symptom, a 30C or higher potency is more appropriate for
general conditions such as allergy, stress or sleep disorders.
Homeopathic medicine potency in the U.S.A. is described by a two part number and letter designation.
Potencies will be referred to as 12X, 6C, 30C, 10M or 6LM. The number part indicates the number of
times the source substance has been homeopathically diluted. The letter portion indicates the dilution
rate. X being the roman numeral 10, is the slowest dilution rate of 1/10 and LM is the fastest dilution
rate of 1/50,000.

Homeopathic Medicine Dosage and Form
Oral homeopathic medicine is available in many forms including the traditional homeopathic pellets,
liquid dilution, tablets and mother tincture.
• Homeopathic Pellets, by far the most popular and traditional form of homeopathic medicine,
are spherical in shape, like small white beads. The homeopathic active ingredient is infused is a
lactose and sucrose base which have a mild sweet taste. These pellets are made in several sizes
the most common sizes are #38 as in a typical MultiDose tube and #20 as in the Unit-Dose tube.
o A Boiron Multi-Dose tube, for example, contains approximately 80 granules (pellet size #38),
where each dose consists of four to five pellets or granules, for a total of 16 doses in each
multi-dose tube.
o As an example, the Boiron Unit-Dose tube contains approximately 200 globules (pellet size
#20), where the entire contents of the unit- dose tube is taken all at once. The globules in the
Unit-Dose tube are much smaller in size than the granules in a Multi-Dose tube, specifically
designed for fast absorption.
Homeopathic pellets are taken sublingually (under the tongue) and allowed to dissolve for optimal
absorption and utilization. They should be taken in the absence of other substances in the mouth
such as food, residues of tooth paste, mouth wash or gum etc. If already eaten or have had
something in the mouth you should wait approximately one hour before taking homeopathic
medicine.
• Liquid Dilution homeopathic medicine is usually dispensed in an amber glass bottle with a
dropper. These are the same homeopathic single remedies but in a liquid form. Liquid dilution
remedies are typically in a purified water and alcohol mixture. The amount of alcohol contained
in these remedies is usually 20% by volume; however, some of the newer prepackaged liquid
dilutions have less alcohol, about 10%, but have an additional ingredient, Glycerin. Liquid dilution
remedies are usually available in sizes of: 0.5 fl oz. (15 ml), 1 fl oz. (30 ml), and 2 fl oz (60 ml).
A single dose of the liquid dilution homeopathic remedy is usually 10 to 20 drops. Now this can
be either taken directly under the tongue, or it can be placed in a cup of room-temperature water. If
taking the remedy in water, take small amounts and swish it around in the mouth before swallowing.
• Homeopathic Tables are lactose based usually supplied in an amber glass bottle. These are fast
dissolving tablets also to be taken sublingually. One table is normally one dose.
• A Homeopathic Mother Tincture is the undiluted liquid extract of the original source. Salts,
minerals and other substances that are solid in their natural state do not have mother tinctures.
The least diluted form of such substance would be a 1X dilution in liquid form.

fold dilution of 3 CH potency.
DILUTIONS-DYNAMIZATION
Homeopathic dilutions are prepared according to the Hahnemannian method. If the successive
dilutions are by tenths (one part of substance to nine parts alcohol), they are called decimal solutions.
They are labeled by the letter X or D, sometimes followed by H (Hahnemann). Thus, a third decimal
solution would be specified as 3X or 3D. If the successive dilutions are made to one hundredth they
are called centesimals. They are denoted by the letters C or CH or they carry no notation. The dilution
(potency) being given and the specificity of action discovered, the potentized substance should be
as pure as possible. No one should “contaminate” the solutions made. Each dilution is energetically
agitated: this is the “Dynamization process”. These dynamized solutions to one-tenth or one-
hundredth, serve as the base for preparing homeopathic medications.
GALENIC FORMS
All of the galenic forms may be used in homeopathy. Based upon the fact that the sublingual route
is the most common, there are dosage forms which are distinctive to homeopathy; Sublingual Drops,
Granules and Globules.
-Drops: Generally presented in amber glass bottles of 30ml (1fl. oz.) or 60ml (2fl. oz.). Most often the
dosage is ten to twenty drops, directly under the tongue or in a little water, very pure, to be kept in the
mouth for a few seconds before swallowing.
-Titurations: These are tablets or medicated powders whose excipient is lactose. Titurations are
generally reserved for insoluble substances. The bottles come in different sizes, e.g.: 1oz, 2oz,
and 4oz. The tablets or powders are placed under the tongue, and allowed to melt slowly before
swallowing.
-Granules are small spheres made from a mixture of saccharose and lactose.
-Globules are also small spheres of the same mixture, saccharose-lactose, but much smaller, around
two hundred per gram. They are usually reserved for high dilutions (30X and higher).
Basically, granules and globules are neutral. They are rendered medically efficacious only upon
impregnation with potentized dilution.

Total Tincture or Mother Tincture:
Well they are both prescribed in two completely different clinical situations. Total Tincture is a
Homoeopathic remedy, and Mother Tincture is not.
A Mother Tincture is a solution of a botanical substance and alcohol made according to standards
set by the HPUS (Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States).Depending on the properties of
the substance, a mother tincture is either a 1x or 1c potency. All higher potencies are derived from the
mother tincture.
There’s a really interesting point behind all this atomic science.
Regardless of its molecular weight, every mole of every substance contains exactly the same
number of molecules. This is called the Avogadro number. So, one mole of water, or iron, or salt,
or carbon dioxide each contains the same number of molecules. Having this information enables
us to calculate the exact vanishing point of the presence of the mother tincture. That is, we know
exactly when we have entered the homeopathic ultra molecular range, where there is no longer
any presence of the original mother tincture. All that remains is an electromagnetic imprint of
the mother tincture (the homeopathic remedy).
Homeopathic remedies are classified into three levels of potencies. X, C and M refer to 10, 100 and
1,000 in terms of the amount of dilution. The confusing and amazing aspect of Homeopathy is that the
more a tincture is diluted, the more potent it becomes. So, while a C is more dilute than an X, the C is
more potent. The M classification is very potent and is usually prescribed by Homeopathic physicians.
Homeopathic remedies begin with part of the original substance dissolved in alcohol, called the
Mother Tincture. The Mother Tincture is then diluted many times. After each dilution the solution
is shaken or “succussed”, this shaking activates the remedy. The solution is then made into pills,
powders, tinctures or creams. A 1X potency is created by mixing 1 part of the mother tincture and 9
parts alcohol or distilled water. In each successive number (increasing the potency 2X, 3X, 6X), 1 part
is taken from the previous potency and diluted according to the new potency.
Example: A 3X remedy (10x10x10=1000) has one part of the 2X remedy to 999 parts of alcohol or
distilled water.
Total Tincture is a combination of multiple potencies of a substance, more likely to be used for
allergies.
Mother Tincture is more likely to be used for food or chemical sensitivity.
Always start with Total Tincture. It is very difficult to distinguish an allergy from sensitivity. With time you
will be able to differentiate with reasonable accuracy.
