Celebrating 80 Years of Exceptional Cab
BY: ALEXANDRA CHARSLEY
Open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 254 St Helena Hwy St Helena, CA 94574 (707) 968-3362 | www.louismartini.com
September 19 marked the 80th anniversary of Louis M. Martini Winery crafting exceptional Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Located just off Highway 29 in St. Helena, Louis M. Martini created his winery in 1933. With the simple, honest premise that the best grapes make the best wines, Louis M. Martini set out to acquire the finest vineyards in what is now one of the worlds most renowned wine-producing regions. This pursuit led him to purchase the Goldstein Ranch on the Sonoma side of the Mayacamas Mountains in 1938, securing one of the most coveted grape growing sites in California. Once an active volcano, he aptly renamed the property Monte Rosso Vineyard for its mountaintop setting and red, volcanic soil. With Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel vines planted as early as 1890, the historic vineyard would become the foundation for Louis M. Martini wines and help place Northern California on the world enological map. Their legacy continues with Winemaker Mike Martini at the helm. Since the beginning of his tenure in 1977, he brought a new winemaking philosophy while honoring the winerys roots and commitment to delivering big, unforgettable wines. He has expanded the winerys high end capabilities with the addition of Cellar 254, a small micro-winery allowing Mike and his team the ability to achieve a new level of finesse and style. Using family traditions, international style, and cutting edge technology, he is continuing the long success of the Louis M. Martini wines. Come taste celebrated wines from a family winery with 80 years of winemaking history! The Louis M. Martini tasting room showcases at least ten different wines from their familys cellar year-round, including their award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, small lot Petite Sirah and Cabernet Ros, the unique Moscato
22
Amabile, and their legendary Lot 1 Cabernet Sauvignon. This traditional tasting room is luxurious, warm and unpretentious so as not to detract from their focus on wine. Here, you are surrounded by deep red walls, velvet curtains and a dark wood bar which is very evocative of their rich Cabernets. Bring a picnic lunch from nearby St. Helena and relax on their outdoor shaded piazza while sipping their wines. Each of their tasting flights features three of their best wines from the most prestigious growing regions in Napa and Sonoma, including their renowned Monte Rosso Vineyard. Bottle service is also offered and their friendly staff will guide you through their wines so you can enjoy an afternoon spent on their estate. If you would like to experience the full history of this distinguished winery, for $50 you can reserve a wine tasting and tour of their estate. Delve into the winerys 80-year heritage and taste their hand-selected wines along the way. Learn more about the Martini familys pioneering history in Napa Valley, see where they craft their wines, stop by the barrel room and raise a glass in their underground cellar. Call (707) 968-3362 to reserve your tour or visit their website at www.louismartini.com. Sumptuous Cabernet Sauvignons are what people envision when they think of Napa Valley and Louis M. Martini wines consistently score 90+ points. Their wines have more of an international style than most California wineries and through collaborative endeavors and state-of-the-art facilities; the Martini family continues to build on a timeless tradition. With their extensive portfolio, you are sure to find a favorite wine here for every day enjoyment or entertaining friends. The winery celebrates their 80th Anniversary all year long so come by for a wine tasting or book a tour and experience notable wines from a historic, family run winery. The tasting room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

If you love premium spirits, or are a true connoisseur of the finest vodka ever produced, then, you dont want to miss Napa Valleys Distillery Vintage Bar Shop at the Oxbow Public Market in downtown Napa. The shop is reminiscent of an era long gone by where you can peruse and purchase award-winning brandies and fruit-based spirits such as NVD Vodka, Lemon Meyer Liqueur and Barrel Aged Cocktails. Here, youll find over 300 flavors of artisan bitters, shrubs, syrups and other culinary ingredients including White Truffle Bitters from England and an exact recreation of the original Abbotts Bitters called for in the Manhattan Cocktail. All the bitters in the store are available for complimentary sampling. You can also delight in their collection of authentic vintage bar and glassware for those nights of entertaining in the home. Founded in 2009 by Arthur and Lusine Hartunian, the Napa Valley Distillery grew out of their passion for premium small batch craft spirits and their love of Napa Valley. The micro-distillery is family owned and operated, and is the first in the City of Napa since prohibition. Napa Valley Distillery is best known for their vodka, lemon liqueur and barrel aged cocktails. The Vodka Vintage Reserve is handcrafted from 100% Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc and harvested from a single vintage and single estate. Less than 10,000 bottles are made every 18 to 24 months and each bottle is hand numbered. This extraordinary vodka has received international acclaim and was named one of the best vodkas in the world by Wine Enthusiast magazine. The Meyer Lemon liqueur was their first product release that Arthur and Lusine, and their three children, proudly used to make on their kitchen table. They now handcraft this same organic Meyer Lemon Liqueur in their distillery located near downtown Napa. Their Meyer Lemon Liqueur won a Platinum Medal at the World Spirits Competition. They make their Barrel-Aged Cocktails using their own award-winning craft spirits and all-natural ingredients. They combine the ingredients in tengallon, stainless-steel tanks and then transfer the un-aged cocktail into American White Oak Barrels for about ten weeks. During this time, the flavors are allowed to integrate, taking on much of the oak characteristics of the barrel. The end result is an extraordinary taste with character that no amount of shaking or stirring can offer. Barrel-Aged Cocktails are loved by true cocktail and premium craft spirit connoisseurs and by those individuals who understand the dedication required to craft something very unique and special. And, thats not all! The Napa Valley Distillery, with an eye on the future, plans to produce a variety of spirits, such as the California Cowboy and Son of a Bourbon whiskey as well as a delicious Old Hollywood Gin. With so much to see and sample, dont miss shopping at their vintage bar shop in the Oxbow Public Market for their one-of-a kind Napa Valley Distillery Vodkas, Lemon Meyer liqueurs and Barrel Aged Cocktails, as well as other culinary and cocktail delights!

A Testament to What Napa Valley Does Best
Situated in the heart of Napa Valley, ZD Wines carries historical significance for several reasons. Four-and-a-half decades ago ZD produced the first wine ever to have an official Carneros designation on its label. The wine was a Pinot Noir, crafted in the Burgundian style that originally sparked ZD co-founder Norman deLeuzes desire to pursue winemaking. ZD also falls among a rare breed of Napa Valley wineries that are still family-owned and operated. Today, three generations of the deLeuze family are committed to a remarkable standard of quality, consistency and style that began in 1969. Out of that tradition comes another exclusive piece of ZDs repertoire: a solera-style wine called Abacus. The literal definition of solera is a base, or a foundation of support. In winemaking terms, the idea behind ZDs solera-style Cabernet Sauvignon is to produce a blend that includes fruit from every reserve vintage, the first of which was 1992. This method showcases how the complexity and elegance of award-winning, aged Cabernets can support the intense, beautiful fruit of younger vintages. On the verge of releasing their fifteenth bottling of Abacus, ZDs ability to seamlessly blend past and current vintages of reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is markedly apparent. Abacus XV features 21 consecutive vintages of reserve fruit, from 1992-2012. With only 200 cases produced, this wine is a testament to what Napa Valley is best known for: premier Cabernet Sauvignon. But its a rare privilege to encounter ZD Wines Abacus. One way is to secure a reservation at ZDs annual Winter Wine Escape. Every year, ample time is set aside to plan this elaborate weekend with the deLeuze family and their winemaking team. Taking place in January, it never fails to boast the valleys most sophisticated cuisine and top-notch lodging experiences not to mention an abundance of world-class ZD wine. The next Winter Wine Escape is set for January 10-12, 2014. Guests will stay at The Carneros Inn for the weekend, and Morimoto Napa will host a ZD wine-paired dinner with a menu crafted by chefs Morimoto and Kang. If you really cant wait to get ZDs solera-style Cabernet in your glass, try an Abacus tour and tasting at their Rutherford winery. This comprehensive experience focuses on reserve wines, including the Cabernet Sauvignon that gets blended into each bottling of Abacus. After exploring ZDs cellar and sampling reserve wines straight out of barrel, guests are welcomed to the Vineyard View Room. A bottle of Abacus is served alongside charcuterie and artisanal cheeses to cap off the event. One-of-a-kind experiences like these offer guests a sense of depth and breadth that only a winery with history as rich as ZDs can provide. Considering their first commercial vintage included just 300 cases of Pinot Noir made in a rented farm building, with an investment of only $6,000, its evident ZD has come a long way. Since 1979, their wine has been crafted fully in-house on their six-acre parcel in Rutherford. The property now features state-of the-art production technology, and its

Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard has been farmed organically since the early 1980s a commitment to sustainability that began with Founder Norman deLeuzes belief in biodiversity as the source of robust vineyards. Winemaker Chris Pisani, with ZD since 1996, notes, Its rare to see the level of commitment you find at a family-owned and operated business. I take pride in knowing our wines are produced using premium grapes, with an attention to winemaking rooted in 44 years of history and expertise. Those four-and-a-half decades have elicited remarkable results. Now known internationally for consistent, world-class wines and unmatched guest experiences, ZDs spot on the map is clear. BENNETT LANE WINERY Open Daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 3340 California 128, Calistoga, CA 94515 (707) 942-6684 | www.bennettlane.com
While Bennett Lane Winery, owned by Randy and Lisa Lynch, has only been in the wine business for a decade, their wines have made quite an impact throughout the wine world, with three dozen 90+ wines, two-thirds in the last five years. These folks know Cabernet in a few short years like few others ever have in the Valley, and theyve done so without pricing their wines through the roof or putting on airs in the process. The point, in other words, isnt just to make great wines the goal is to go above and beyond and give memorable experiences. The winery itself is positioned at the dove-tailing wedge of the eastern Vaca and western Mayacamas at the top of the Valley. The combination of soil, exposure and breeze makes about as perfect a spot for wine as exists anywhere on the planet, and the twenty-three acres of Cabernet vines produce those wines with all the high scores. The private lane which greets you is surrounded by vines, and the multi-story, artfully shaped winery feels set inside the land. The tasting room is contemporary and funky, a rustic Meditterranean seen through the lens of the North Bay. It gives a mix of natural stone and wood, and the Napa-typical red pine of the barrel room nicely accents the color palette. Outside are multiple decks and pergolas, each providing views of the Mayacamas, and the soft tinkling of the large water fountain accompanies all this, underlying the feeling of being in the Valley. The winerys iPad app adds a nice touch since its loaded with info yet unobtrusive for those who want their tasting sans the details. Everything, in other words, has definitely been thought out with the experience in mind. For your tasting, youve got quite a range of choices, too, especially

given the attention paid to Cabernet, obviously. There are three different Cabs, by the way, as well as the renowned Maximus Red Feasting Wine, which adds Syrah into the usual Bordeaux buddies along the way to being the best deal in the Valley for a red wine blend. The latest Maximus release would be reason enough to get up there, but theres plenty more: reserve Chardonnay; Merlot; Syrah; the white Maximus Feasting Wine with its Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Muscat blend; as well as a port-style dessert wine of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and, enjoyably, Carignane, that nowlittle-seen favorite of the original planters of the Calistoga area. Other tasting options include a unique Varietals Fruit Flavor Custom-Blending Experience; it needs reservations, but you drive away in your own personal stretch limousine with a custom-blended bottle of Maximus red. Bennett Lane also has its own, Valleyexclusive hot air balloon to take guests up, up and away at dawn. In conjunction with Calistoga Balloons, they offer standard and private flight packages, presenting lots of options for thrilling memories. Regardless of when or where you taste, General Manager Stefanie Longton says it perfectly, We want to offer the full hospitality experience so people feel welcomed to learn about the amazing wines in the Calistoga AVA. After all, some of the best reds in the valley come from here, and what better place to experience them than right here at Bennett Lane! If all Ive written still hasnt convinced you to come check these folks out, here are a few more inducements: the vineyards around you are sustainably farmed. Continuing the philosophy of honoring what works from the past, theres a very cool theme of Roman coins on the wine labels and in the wine names. Be true to who you are, regardless of what you enjoy, is basically the message since its the Lynches themselves who are into the Romanalia. In the same vein, theyre totally dog-friendly Like Ive been saying all along, run, right now to the friendliest tasting room in the Valley. You wont be sorry. Enjoy!

WCTW: Whats your favorite overall varietal and where do you like to go to taste it: SB: Pinot Noir is my wine of choice (today, anyway) and I would head to Hartford Family Winery in Forestville exceptional Pinots from the Russian River poured in their rather elegant but understated tasting room. Youll need to get your directions first your GPS may not work. WCTW: What winery do you think has the best over the top experience to offer visitors? SB: The mountain top tasting at Kunde Estate in Sonoma Valley or Michele Schlumberger in Dry Creek are two experiences not to be missed. WCTW: Where do you send guests that want to learn about wine? SB: For the novice wine taster, I would recommend the tour at Benziger Winery in Glen Ellen. Sitting on the mountainside just below Jack London State Park, youll be driven through the vineyards and see what goes into winemaking. WCTW: What area would you recommend that is not part of popular wine country: SB: Try Green Valley, you may not have heard of it, but you wont be disappointed when you visit it. WCTW: What is your favorite new hot spot? SB: ParTake by Kendall-Jackson in Healdsburg. WCTW: Where would you take friends to learn about/taste organic wines? SB: For an amazing look at the vineyard from the ground up, try the tour at Littorai Winery in Sebastopol. This Biodynamic vineyard uses a method of organic farming which emphasizes a sustainable approach to agriculture.
WCTW: Whats your favorite overall varietal and where do you like to go to taste it? LR: Im a sucker for an old standard Chardonnay with nice oak and creamy overtones. Rombauer has a wonderful bottle that hits home with me. But lately, Ive found myself with a bit of a purple tongue the sign of a good Petite Syrah, like those of David Fulton Winery. WCTW: Which winery has your favorite cave tour? LR: Palmaz! This family-friendly wine cave is 18 stories high with technology like no other! Your visit will be a private experience where they will dazzle you with excellent wine, beautiful views and an amazing food and wine pairing! WCTW: Tell us the best wineries to bring pets. LR: Lots of places love animals, but these are just a few places who have the grounds your pet will enjoy the most: Alpha Omega, Casa Nuestra, Titus Vineyards and Jericho Canyon, among others. Always check ahead for available appointments. The ideal doggie experience is at Raymond Vineyards, though. They have created Frenchie Winery, Napa Valleys first dog winery! You can watch your pet enjoy an outdoor dog suite from the Frenchie Cam while tasting Raymonds wonderful Biodynamic wines! WCTW: Where would you take friends to learn about/taste organic wines? LR: Frogs Leap, hands down. The relaxed atmosphere and natural setting just enhance their unique approach to winemaking. WCTW: What area would you recommend that is not part of the popular wine country? LR: Howell Mountain. Excellent, big Cabernets intimate experiences breathtaking views (some of my favorites are Cade, Cimarossa & Viader).

Hincapie the only man ever to ride in 17 editions of the Tour de France, ace cycling commentator Roll, Master of Wine Peter Marks, Celebrity Chefs gustavo Rios and Janet Sheehan, and amazing Napa Winemakers team up on a fundraiser for the Napa Cycling Community
The Napa County Bicycle Coalition has organized the ultimate wine country cycling experience for October 31 and November 1 in the heart of the Napa Valley. This exclusive event features a 55-mile bike ride with George Hincapie, considered the premier grand tour rider of his generation, and Bob Roll, the renowned American commentator covering all of cyclings grand tours. Im looking forward to being part of this unique event, especially because it benefits such a great cause, says Hincapie. It will be awesome riding in Napa Valley with a small group of cycling enthusiasts. For me, it isnt just another bike ride, it is a total Napa Valley experience. Limited to only thirty people, participants will enjoy an intimate and exclusive Napa Valley cycling, wine tasting and gourmet dining adventure tour. Each of the thirty riders will also be able to share part of their experience with a guest at the incredible welcome dinner with the Legends. The gourmet welcome dinner for riders and their guests is at Vineyard 29 on Thursday evening, where star Chef Gustavo Rios, of Michelin Star-winning Solbar will present a meal that is truly Legendary. Artfully woven in to the dining experience, Master of Wine Peter Marks will lead a one-of-kind tasting of world class reserve wines from some of Napa Valleys finest vineyards each made by Napa Valley winemakers who are cycling enthusiasts. On Friday the day begins with a delightful breakfast at Auberge du Soleil in Rutherford, from where the lucky group of riders will set off with George and Bob on the quieter roads of rural Napa County. Calistoga Bikeshop will provide their luxury van as SAG support for the entire ride. Pine Ridge Winery in Napa is the lunch rest stop where executive chef Janet Sheehan will present an amazing luncheon to fuel the riders for the final leg of their journey through Napa Valley to Velo Vinon the tasting room of the Clif Family Winery in St. Helena. Here Gary Ericksons crew will welcome the peloton and their families for a final session of story-telling and jersey signing by George and Bob all of which will be enjoyed with more great food and fine wine from Clif Family Vineyards. And Velo Vino has a special dessert food and wine pairing planned as the Grand Finale. I always love riding in Napa Valley, and frankly, the Legendary Tour is the best cycling event I have ever experienced. I am honored to be asked back as a guest rider with George Hincapie, says Bob Roll. And I know from last year that the special dinner, plus the beautiful ride through Napa Valley, will make this an unforgettable experience for everyone. I especially look forward to sitting around with a glass of wine with George and the group, to talk about bike racing and to share insights into pro cycling. Thats what makes this event so special. The cost is $1750 per rider, and all proceeds from this event benefit the Napa County Bicycle Coalition and its goals to make Napa County more bicycle-friendly for cyclists of all types and persuasions. Looking for more than a dozen tasting room-only, classicallystyled wines by the folks in the Valley who pioneered Napa Merlot? Wanting to try them in an atmosphere filled with knowledgeable hosts who, without any posturing, can address any inquiry you might make about the Napa Valley, wine styles, wine regions and wine country life? And hoping for unique memories to keep with you even after the wonderful wines have been taken home and enjoyed? Then Rutherford Hill is the place for you, and its the unique combination of small-release winery-only wines, wine education without pretense and an intriguing cave tour which makes it our Tasting Room of the Week. The winery was founded more than four decades ago by grape growers inspired by Bordeaux traditions. The Terlato family took over in the 1990s because, as John Terlato says, Our family is passionate and committed to crafting high-quality wines. Under their guidance, the winerys quality and range of wines have most definitely blossomed. In addition to benchmark releases of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Ros and Sauvignon Blanc, coming to the tasting room provides the only opportunity to taste and purchase a wide range of limited production wines, including Cabernet Franc, a Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Syrah, a Winemakers Blend, and a Zinfandel Port. The winerys state-of-the-art winery-within-a-winery, created by the Terlatos specifically to design greater quality wines, allows for the production of these limited releases, letting its winemakers stretch their legs a bit and use the new ideas and techniques developed on the winerys larger production wines. The just-released 2009 Reserve Merlot, another winery-only release, is further proof of how successful this planning has been. Part of the distinction in winemaking practices is the extent of the cave complex the winery has built. The cave tour and tasting show the degree to which wine education is integrated into all aspects of the winery experience for guests. As hosts guide visitors throughout the cave system, they receive an understanding of the way its design is reflected in the finished wines produced from within it. Enjoy the sights and taste fantastic wines on this well explained subterranean journey. Merlot has been the flagship varietal for Rutherford Hill over the years, and for those wanting an even more intimate discussion of and hands-on appreciation of what goes into creating some of the worlds finest small-production wines, there is the wineblending class, Blend Your Own Merlot, available by appointment. A winery host leads a guided tour of the property,

tasting several wines and discussing the blending process, and then sitting down in the caves and creating the blend for the 375ML bottle of wine you take home with you. The uniqueness doesnt end there. After youve toured the winery and learned what goes into its wine production, Rutherford Hill offers a final Napa Valley rarity: the ability to purchase wines and drink them onsite, enjoying the beautiful view of the Valley floor from the winerys vantage point. Guests are encouraged to use the picnic grove after visiting the winery, and there are plenty of terrific winery-only offerings to enjoy while there. Come see for yourself what others have known for more than forty years amazing wines from an amazing perspective both above- and below-ground! Youll be glad you did!

Napa Valley Open Studios Celebrates 26th Anniversary September 21-22, 28-29
Have you ever spent time in a painters studio? Watching as the artist mixes colors and applies paint to canvas, creating a work of art right before your eyes? Would you like to see how a sculptor creates a bronze statue or carves marble? Are you curious about how someone weaves a rug, makes a glass plate or creates a ceramic vase? Ever seen a jeweler or silversmith at work or wondered how a photographer captures that one-of-a-kind photograph? Whether youre a collector, an art lover or just curious about how various kinds of artwork are created, this is your once-a-year opportunity to meet Napa Valleys finest artists and experience their work spaces. Come and satisfy your artistic curiosity while enjoying all the beauty and sensual pleasures that a tour through California Wine Country has to offer. This is the 26th Anniversary of Napa Valley Open Studios a free, self-guided art discovery tour and it promises to be our best one yet! During the last two weekends in September, 84 participating artists at 52 different studio locations will be welcoming you into their creative spaces. From the City of Napa in the south to Calistoga in the north, all up and down the Valley, you can visit with artists working in every medium. Some will be giving demonstrations, but all will be glad to share how they do what they do, and show you the results. Studios will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both weekends. This years catalog cover artist is Michael Fitzpatrick. Michael is a figurative painter whose goal is to combine classical figurative realism with contemporary abstract design. Make sure to visit his Napa studio to view the painting he calls, Thats How I Roll. It is one in a series that deals with the subject of individualism. It was inspired partially by the young women in Japan called the Harajuku girls; young women who dress in elaborate, colorful costumes and parade around the Harajuku district in Tokyo. In this high-tech world we live in its important to remember that there are still talented people creating beautiful artwork the old fashioned way by hand. The mission of Napa Valley Open Studios is to create awareness and an appreciation of the painters, sculptors, potters, jewelers, photographers, and glass and fiber artists working throughout the Napa Valley. So come spend a day (or two or three!) exploring the artistic abundance of Open Studios throughout beautiful Napa Valley. There is something for everyone to marvel at and enjoy. Then look across the vineyards of the valley and take a deep breath. Life is good! For information regarding the work of individual artists, visit the galleries at www.NapaValleyOpenStudios.org For an overview of Napa Valley Open Studios and its artists, visit www.NapaValleyOpenStudios.info.

Sonoma-Enoteca is a truly unique wine country experience. Ten different California wineries within a 100-mile radius have collectively joined together to sell their limited-production wines. These ten different producers give guests a chance to taste many different wines of the same varietal by different winemakers and located in different AVAs. And, since the wine tastings here can accommodate every style, it is the ideal tasting room to visit when you are visiting the Historic Sonoma Plaza. At their spacious Mediterranean style tasting room, youll savor some of the best wine from Sonoma and Mendocinos boutique vineyards that can only be found here. On most days, you will find one of the local winemakers on hand pouring at the tasting bar, giving insight on their wines and the differences between varietals. They are also so knowledgeable about the area and will be more than happy to recommend other excursions during your stay. Wine flights include six tastes and since there are over 20 different wines, you can really choose to taste several single varietals or have fun and select a red or white wine tasting. The wines here are so distinct and offer guests a great opportunity to taste some of the lesser known producers around. So, if you are like me and are taking Ray Isles advice on how to restock your wine fridge, then this is one tasting room that shouldnt be missed when you are in Sonoma. In addition to tasting at the wine bar you can enjoy the most eclectic collection of wine accessories in town. Shop for art, glass wear, wine books, California olive oils and gorgeous furnishings that reflect the best in wine country living. Local chocolate truffles can be purchased and all olive oils, mustards and vinegars can be sampled as you peruse the shop. The Sonoma-Enoteca Tasting Room is open Wednesday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Their historic tasting room is the perfect getaway while visiting the Sonoma Plaza. Taste and experience these premium wines in one place.

Csaba Szakal and his wife Sandy opened their En Garde Winery Tasting Room in downtown Kenwood just over a year ago. Their wines have garnered serious attention in a short period of time. Csaba is a fourth generation Hungarian winemaker who came to this country to work in the Silicon Valley. His wife Sandy grew up in Sonoma County and is well-versed in the wine industry. With his impressive winemaking experience, and her numerous personal contacts, En Garde Winery turned from dream into reality. His winemaking style could be described as avant-garde and he is extremely passionate about producing extraordinary wines. Grapes are sourced from the most prestigious vineyards in California and since En Garde Winery is considered a micro-winery, this is an incredible accomplishment. Each varietal is carefully sourced from specific growers and he hand selects only the best grapes available that are consistent with the quality of wines he crafts. Csabas Hungarian influence comes through in his wines yet he puts his own California twist on them. This is essentially true of his Tempranillo. This wine has traditional vanilla notes as found in a Spanish Rioja but has more oak as it is aged in oak barrels for 1- years. His flagship wine is the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from the famed Diamond Mountain in Napa Valley. For two consecutive years this wine has also won first place at the Cabernet Shootout and

double gold at the San Francisco International Wine Competition providing consistent quality and attention to detail. In a sea of Chardonnays, Csaba has chosen the white wine grape varietal Albario because he fell in love with it while in Spain. This wine is usually grown in Galicia, Spain and is the distinct white in their portfolio. Staying true to this varietal, Csaba purchases grapes from a Spanish grower in the Borden Ranch appellation, so this wine is a true representation of an Albario. This wine also won the Best Micro Winery White in Show at the California State Fair Wine Competition so again this is a wonderful example of his philosophy that the best grapes equal the best quality. Also on the Current Release Tasting Flight, guests have the opportunity to experience Csabas Hungarian influence with a Dry Ros. This wine represents his heritage and honors his Grandfathers winemaking style. For a refreshing drink on a hot summer afternoon, he suggests mixing in club soda which will enhance the strawberry and raspberry flavors in the wine. Either way, this wine is so crisp and food friendly and a great wine to share! The berry port Magdalena, is named after his Grandmother and Mother and honors his familys winemaking traditions yet is made with 100% fruit juices. This vintage made modern style wine has pronounced tart cherry flavor and is such a delight to enjoy after dinner. Their tasting room is as sophisticated as their wines and it has European charm making guests feel welcomed as soon as they arrive. Most days guests will find Csaba in the tasting room and will enjoy his informative discussions about his wines and heritage. Tastings are available daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The town of Kenwood is on the quieter side of wine country so its less crowded and offers guests more intimate tasting experiences. En Garde Winery is a newcomer, yet should be on your wineries to watch list so come in for a tasting and enjoy their exceptional grape to glass wines!

Mendocino County Celebrates 13th Annual Mushroom, Wine and Beer Festival with a Host of Fun(Gi) Events This Fall
At the 13th Annual Mushroom, Wine and Beer Festival in Mendocino County, local wine and craft beers will be enjoyed alongside delectable mushrooms in a ten-day festival that is sure to please the most discriminating palates. The mouth-watering mushrooms of Mendocino County, combined with wines and craft beers from the area, will make the 2013 festival, which runs Friday, November 1 to Sunday, November 10, an event that delights foodies, oenophiles and nature-lovers alike! Mendocino County boasts more than 3,000 types of mushrooms, 500 of which are edible, including chanterelles, porcinis, morels and hedgehogs, and even the extremely rare candy cap mushroom, with its intense maple-syrup flavor, that grows only along the northern coast of California. The Mushroom, Wine and Beer Festival celebrates this bounty with an array of events, including winemaker and brewmaster dinners, wild mushroom foraging excursions, educational wine and beer-pairing demonstrations, art exhibitions and more! Numerous restaurants will feature mushroom-themed menus and flavorful fungi to tempt tastebuds. Inns, hotels, motels and bed & breakfast properties will feature discounted specials and packages. The premier event of the festival is the Mushroom, Wine and Beer Train, aboard the historic Skunk Train on Saturday, November 2nd. Trains leaving from Fort Bragg and Willits arrive at Camp Mendocino deep in the redwood forest for a day of wine tastings, culinary treats and a mushroom cook-off. The event will feature local mushroom expert, Eric Schramm, a mushroom hike, and presentation about Mendocino County wines. Silent auction, live music and dessert port and chocolate truffles round off the trip. For information about events surrounding the Mushroom, Wine & Beer Festival, visit www.visitmendocino.com/mushroomfestival or call 1-866-466-3636. Please note that new events are being added every week. Titter: @VisitMendocino | Facebook: facebook.com/VisitMendocinoCounty.

We can trace our family winemaking back to the early 19th century as well to a small village outside of Genoa, Italy. A family photo hangs in our Tasting Room of Nonna Rosa Garr with a glass of wine in her hand and her son-in-law, Gino Molinaro, holding the jug of family wine. The picture was taken in Glen Ellen at our familys summer cabin in the early 1930s. My dad, (Bob Molinaro, Garr Winery owner) tells the story of
his dad and uncles getting together every year to make their wine for the family. The truck would bring red grapes from Napa to San Francisco, where the families lived. The grapes would be crushed and fermented and the wine would be made. My uncles learned from their uncles who brought their knowledge and experience from the Old Country to the New World. Our heritage and family traditions are the backbone of Garr, welcoming everyone who visits as family to enjoy the experience of Old Italy. Stop by for a visit, youll be glad you did. Share in our toast of a glass from the past, a toast to the future.
