EXTREME BRUNCH EATING CONTEST Ocial Rules

September 21, 2013

Eligibility of Contestants

Any member of the Rensselaer community (students, sta, faculty, family, etc.) are eligible to compete. The event will run from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM (Eastern time). Contestants must register at the event table in the Commons dining hall in order to be eligible to compete. Registration will open shortly before the start of the event and close at the conclusion of the event.

Eligible Foods

Any food served at the Commons dining hall during the event is allowed. Outside food (including Simply To Go meals) may be consumed but will not count towards the nal score. Only food counts towards a contestants score; beverages are not counted towards the total score. Condiments do not count toward the total score.

Scoring

Each food is assigned a score according to a mathematical formula based on the calorie content of the food with a scaled correction for the caloric density of the food. Scores have been calculated in advance for each item listed under Saturday Lunch on the online menu [1]. In the event that a food without an assigned score is eaten, a judge will rst conrm that the food originated in the Commons dining hall. Once this is conrmed, the judge will attempt to nd a portion size and calorie count for the food. A nutritional facts sign within the dining hall is the preferred source for this information, but if this is not found, the judge should refer to the Sodexo Nutrition Calculator [2]. If the nutritional information still cannot be found, the judge is to use his or her best judgment in assigning a point value as a multiple of 10. This decision is nal and cannot be changed.

Items Excluded as Condiments

The following is a list of items considered to be condiments and thus excluded from having a point value. A judge may, at his or her discretion, identify other items as condiments. When there is a question of point value, Table 1 will take precedence over this list. Ketchup Mustard Mayonnaise Pickles Onions Lettuce 2

Calculation of Point Values

(C + ) ] 30 log10 C

Point values are calculated using the equation P = 10nint[

where P is the point value, C is the number of calories per serving, is the pointwise scaling parameter, and is the caloric scaling parameter. The two scaling parameters are to be set at the discretion of the judges; they were set to 1 and 0, respectively, for the point values calculated in Table 1.
