Marion Miller Award

Background
The Marion Miller Award was created to honour Marion Miller, who was a promising graduate student working with Dr. Jack Ellis at York University during the 1970s. Ms. Miller was very much involved in the Ontario Research Council on Leisure (ORCOL) at that time, and was one of the key organisers of the Second Canadian Congress on Leisure Research, held in Toronto in 1978. Tragically, she died in a plane crash just prior to the Congress. This award for the most outstanding paper authored by a student has since been presented by ORCOL at each subsequent Canadian Congress on Leisure Research to honour Marion Miller.

Eligibility The author must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. The paper must be based on research undertaken as part of a full-time graduate or undergraduate degree or diploma at a Canadian or non-Canadian university or college. Both conceptual and empirical papers are welcome. Applicants may be either currently registered in a degree or diploma programme or recently graduated (within the past two years). Individuals who graduated prior to 2011 are not eligible. Only single-authored papers will be considered. While a students supervisor can and should be acknowledged, he or she should not be included as a co-author of the submitted paper; however, the supervisor can be identified as a co-author for the conference presentation. Paper Format The paper must include a title page, abstract, and any attachments such as tables and/or figures. All parts of the paper should adhere to the guidelines of the Publication of the American Psychological Association (APA). When submitting a paper for consideration, please adhere to the following criteria: a. Cover Page on a separate sheet, indicate the title of the paper, the authors full name and affiliation (i.e., University or college where the paper was completed), contact information, including mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address. Identify the name of the supervisor and contact information for him or her. Indicate if the paper is derived from a thesis or major paper completed as part of a degree or diploma programme. b. Abstract the second page should include the title of the paper, an abstract of approximately 150 words summarising the main points of the paper, and three to five keywords. The authors name should not appear on this page.

c. Body of the paper the paper must be double-spaced, with 1-inch margins on all sides. Use appropriate headings to distinguish each section of the paper. d. References following the body of the paper and beginning on a new page, all references cited in the paper must be listed alphabetically. e. Tables and Figures any tables and/or figures may appear either within the body of the paper immediately following the first reference to each, or following the references, with each appearing on a separate page. The paper should be limited to approximately 20 to 30 double-spaced pages. Papers may be submitted in either French or English. If submitted in French, please include an English abstract. The submission deadline is Friday, March 14th, 2014. Selection Criteria Each paper will be reviewed by a panel of three judges drawn from the Boards of Directors of the Ontario Research Council on Leisure (ORCOL) and the Canadian Association for Leisure Studies/Association canadienne dtudes en loisir (CALS). The Marion Miller Award will be made to the paper reflects the best overall scholarship. In other words, the paper should have a strong theoretical foundation and a thoughtful, insightful interpretation regardless of whether it is a conceptual or empirical study. Award ORCOL will present an award of $500 to the winner at the banquet of the Canadian Congress on Leisure Research. Also, the student registration fee for the Congress will be waived for the winner (the winner will be responsible for all other expenses). Deadlines Applicants are encouraged to meet the normal deadlines for the submission of an abstract and registration directly to the Congress Committee in order to be considered for inclusion in the CCLR14 programme, regardless of the outcome of the Award competition. All applicants for the award must submit the paper electronically by Friday, March 14th, 2014 to Dr. Bryan Smale, President, Ontario Research Council on Leisure, at smale@uwaterloo.ca Paper Presentation The winner must be properly registered for CCLR14 and must attend the Congress in order to receive the Award.
