The temple consists of nine shrines to Lord Nrsimha located around a 5 KM circle. In addition to the nine shrines, there is a temple for Prahalada Varadhan in the foothills of the mountain. Due to security reasons and the difficulty in performing daily worship, many of the utsava vigrahas of the nine shrines are kept in this temple. Garuda wished for a vision of Lord Nrsimha in the form of the SrI Nrsimha Avatara. To fulfill his wish, the Lord settled in the hills around Ahobilam in the midst of dense forests in nine different forms. For this reason this hill came to be known as GaruDAdri, GaruDAcalam, and GaruDaSailam. Ahobilam is the place where the Lord killed HiranyakaSipu and saved Prahalada. Mahalakshmi took avatar as Senjulakshmi among the Senju, tribal hunters of the hills, and married the Lord.

Sri Ahobila MaTham, one of the most important SrI VaishNava religious institutions in India, was established by SrI AdivaN SaThakopan at the instructions of Lord Lakshmi Nrsimha of Ahobilam. In fact, the utsava moorthy of the Malola Nrsimha temple, one of the nine shrines of Ahobilam, is the presiding deity of SrI Ahobila MaTham. Sri Malolan accompanies SrImad Azhagiya Singar, the spiritual and titular head of SrI Ahobila MaTham, on his travels. Thirumangai AzhvAr has sung ten verses about this temple in Periya Thirumozhi. The son responded and declared that bhagavAn is everywhere including the mighty pillar of the kings court and also in the insignificant blade of grass. The father angrily mocked the child and asked whether the Lord of PrahlAdan was in the pillar that he pointed out and hit that pillar with uncontrollable rage. The moment hiraNyakaSipu hit that pillar with the mace in his hand, the Lord jumped out hurriedly even without waiting for the full form of Lion to develop and proved that His devotees statement is not false. After the avatAra kAryam of dushTa nigraham and sishTa paripAlanam was over, the Lord rose up as Lakshmi sametan towards SrI VaikuNTham. The great AcAryAs assembled below prayed to the Lord to stay in this world in His arcA form and bless them. Our Lord was immensely pleased. He took on the arcA form then as MAlolan residing today in SrI Ahobila MaTham in the middle of GAruDa Sailam as samasta parimaLa gandha rasa svarUpan (raso vai saha) in a small sized form to house His immense divya mangaLa vigraham. Ahobila mahatmiyam http://www.sadagopan.org/index.php/categories/doc_details/870-sh053-ahobilamahatmiyam ***** A SINGULAR ACARYA A BRAHMACARI SANYASI ASCENDS THE THRONE: (Article courtesy aDiyEns English commentaries on dayA sAgara Satakam eBook # SH013 at www. sadagopan.org) keSavArya krpApAtram dhISamAdi guNArNavam | SrI SaThAri yatISAnam deSikendramaham bhaje || prapadye niravadyAnAm nishadyAm guNasampadAm | SaraNam bhavabhItAnAm SaThakopa munISvaram || Chosen by Lord LakshmI Nrsimhan Himself, a young 19 year old BrahmacAri began the SrI Malola pAduka sevai that is being continued to this day by an extraordinary unbroken line of AcAryAs. The entire miraculous event of the First AcAryan being chosen by the Lord is best described by the words of HH 44th paTTam SrImad Azhagiya Singar in His dayA sAgara Satakam, a tribute that He composed to the great lineage he belonged to and the blessing that was conferred on Him by SrI MAlolan. yatirUpadharam paScAt cintayantam kalau tadA | sancAradaksham sarvaj~nam dayAsAgaramASraye || (dayA sAgara Satakam, Slokam 17) After consulting with His devi, in this Kali yugam to find the sadAcAryan, who had the power to travel around and to shower ujjIvanam on those who sought the sacred feet for their protection from the divya dampatis. The Lord found that omniscient sadAcAryan after careful thinking, and decided to appear in the form of an old sanyAsi at the bank of bhavanAsini river at Ahobilam to initiate the selected mahAn into sanyAsASramam AhUya SrInivAsAryam krtvA sanyAsinam gurum | SankhacakrAdi dAdAtaram dayAsAgaramASsraye || (dayA sAgara Satakam, Slokam 18) SrI Lakshmi Nrsimhan of Ahobilam appeared in the dream of the young SrInivAsan born at TirunArAyaNapuram and undergoing kAlakshepam at KAncipuram with GaTikAsatam AmmAL, the grandson of SrI NaDAtUr AmmAl. The Lord of GaruDAdri commanded the young student (BrahmacAri) SrInivAsan from a great vamSam to travel to His mountainous abode of Ahobilam. On an auspicious tithi, nakshatram and vAram, SrI Lakshmi Nrsimhan taking the form of an older yati, seated SrI SrInivAsan on the AcArya pITham and performed the preksha mantra upadeSam Himself to initiate the newly appointed AcAryan into sanyAsASramam. aDiyEn prostrates before the ocean of compassion, SrI Lakshmi Nrsimhan, who gave the conch and disc insignia that He had with Him to help the new AcAryan to perform the rituals of SamASrayaNam for the ASritALs of the Lord. This great AcAryan was tireless in His efforts to carry forward the command of Lord SrI Lakshmi Nrsimhan and with the Lords blessings accomplished many unique path breaking achievements. Due to His devotion to SrI SaThakopar (SvAmi NammAzhvAr), He found the original idol of SvAmi that had been cast away due to neglect and re-installed it in AlvAr Thirunagari with proper rituals. Pleased with this act, SvAmi NammAzhvAr bestowed the title VaN SaThakopar on this AcAryan, which became the title used by all the yati-s of this guru parampara. He also established many centres for spreading the knowledge of the SrI SampradAyam as well as constructed many maNDapams and structures to provide a place of learning to aasritALs. SrI AdivaN SaThakopar was a foremost AcArya in propagating SrI rAmAnuja-SvAmi deSika sampradAyam and gave many pravacanams on Bhagavad vishayam, SrIbhAshyam and Veda/VedAngas. He could have easily blessed us with many granthams but He preferred to provide anugraham through kAlakshepa mukham. He became a veritable SrIbhAshya DeSikan.

For the purposes of conducting His AcAryan's kAlakshepams, the local king Mukundarayan constructed a 100 pillar maNDapam on the banks of BhavanAsini river at upper Ahobilam. It was here the well known sishyAs of Adi VaNN SaThakopa jIyar like MaNapAkkam ThOzhappar (Vaidika sArvabhaumar), AnnamAcArya, Thirumalai NampAkkam KrishNamAcchAr (the successor to Adi VaN SaThakopa jIyar) became part of the kAlakshepa goshTi. Each of the AcAryan in this illustrious lineage have been singularly devoted yatis full of j~nAnam, vAtsalyam, kAruNyam and anushThAna-vairAgya balam. The 45th pontiff of SrI Ahobila MaTham HH SrI NArAyaNa yatIndra mahAdeSikan, was instrumental in transforming the once un-navigable paths to the nava narasimha shrines in the forested hills of SrI Ahobilam, to an accessible pilgrimage place for AstikAs. He renovated the shrines of the nava narasimhAs and constructed places of stay for yAtrikAs. He also made it possible to have the perennial waters of the BhavanAsini river to be transported through granite conduit pipes to be brought to the upper Ahobila sannidhi of SrI AhobileSar. The 46th pontiff, who is currently presiding over the SrI MaTham has now expressed His tiruvuLLam to further the kaimkaryams undertaken by His predecessor at SrI Ahobila divya deSam. To this end, He has proposed the kaimkaryam of renovating the sacred 100 pillar granite maNDapam that was built by HH SrImadAdivaN SaThakopa Jeeyar for conducting the ubhaya vedAnta, SrIbhAshya kAlakshepams at Ahobilam close to the place where bhagavAn SrI LakshmI Nrsmhan initiated the First AcAryan into sanyAsASramam. The daily observances of the AcAryAs of this MaTham can be read from the eBook # SS079 A Day in Srimatam (http://www.sadagopan.org/index.php/

HH 46th paTTam SrImadazhagiya singar (left). The 100 pillar maNDapam as it is today (right) The 100 pillar maNDapam constructed by HH SrImadAdivaN SaThakopa jIyar for conducting pravacanams on SrI bhAshyam and Veda/VedAngams is in need of dire repairs today. Due to the encroaching forest and harsh environmental factors, the structure has deteriorated and needs to be renovated to serve the Astika communities for ages to come. It is the tiruvuLLam of HH SrImad RanganAtha yatIndra mahAdeSikan, the 46th paTTam SrImad Azhagiya Singar and the reigning pontiff of SrI Ahobila MaTham to renovate this important and sacred structure. In His own words, the Pontiff has attested to the delightful dhvani of SrI BhAshyam that can be heard even today around 6 A.M inside the maNDapam. As sishyAs of SrI MaTham and also as bhaktAs of Lord SrI LakshmI Nrsimhan, it is our good fortune to be offered this opportunity to help with this great kaimkaryam. At present the cost of renovation is estimated at 15 lakhs of Indian Rupees. BhaktAs can make samarpaNam at $ 100/-, $ 250/- or yathA Sakti. Those interested to take part in this kaimkaryam please contact aDiyEn at yennappan@computer.net Those who are in India can send their samarpaNams to Sriman K.C.Chellappa of the monthly svAti kaimkaryam fame. He can be reached at (044)2817 2233 or 0944 413 1663 at Chennai. You can also send your samarpaNam online to Ahobila Matam web site (http://www.ahobilamutt.org). Needless to say, this is a once in a life time kaimkaryam to commemorate the importance of SrI BhAshyam and the illustrious Vaibhavam of Adi VaN SaThakopa jIyar, the First pIThAdipati of SrI MaTham. aDiyEn will post daily essays on the tributes made over the centuries to SrI Adi VaN SaThakopa yatIndra mahADeSikan until his tirunakshatra dinam, PuraTTAsi kETTai (October 10/ PuraTTAsi 24).
