Liturgy of the Word

First Reading Commentator:

(Genesis 18:20-32) (Sit) In our reading, we see that the just God is willing to spare sinful cities for the sake of only a handful of good people. Here we also find the intercessory prayer of the just man, Abraham.

Reader:

A reading from the Book of Genesis IN THOSE. DAYS, the Lord said: 'The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great, and their sin so grave, that! must go down and see whether or not their actions fully correspond to the cry against them that comes to me. I mean to find out." While Abraham's visitors walked on farther toward Sodom, the LORD remained standing before Abraham. Then, Abraham drew nearer and said: Will you sweep away the innocent with the guilty? Suppose there were fifty innocent people in the city; would you wipe out the place, rather than spare it for the sake of the fifty innocent people within it? Far be it from you to do such a thing, to make the innocent die with the guilty so that the innocent and the guilty would be treated alike! Should not the judge of all the world act with justice? The LORD replied, If I find fifty innocent people in the city of Sodom, I will spare, the whole place for their sake. Abraham spoke up again: See how I am presuming to speak to my Lord, though I am but dust and ashes! What if there are five less than fifty innocent people? Will you destroy the whole city because of those five? He answered, I will not destroy it, if I find forty-five there. But Abraham persisted: saying "What if only forty are found there?" He replied, "I Will forbear doing it for the sake of the forty." Then Abraham said, "Let not my Lord grow impatient if I go on. What if only thirty are found there?" He replied, "I will forbear doing it if I can. find but thirty there." Still Abraham went on, "Since I have thus dared to speak to my Lord, what if there are no more than twenty?" The LORD answered, "I will not destroy it, for the sake of the twenty." But he still persisted: "Please, let not my Lord grow angry if I speak up this last time. What if there are at least ten -there?" He replied, "For the sake of those ten, I will not destroy it. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (Psalm 138) Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.

Responsorial Psalm

1. I will give thanks to you, O LORD, with all my heart, for you have heard the words of my mouth; in the presence of the angels I will sing your praise; I will worship at your holy temple and give thanks to your name. (R) 2. Because of your kindness and your truth; for you have made great above all things your name and your promise. When I called you answered me; you built up strength within me. (R) 3. The Lord is exalted, yet the lowly he sees, and the proud he knows from afar. Though, I walk amid distress, you preserve me; against the anger of my enemies you raise your hand. (R)

4. Your right hand saves me. The Lord will complete what he has done for me; your kindness, O Lord, endures forever; forsake not the work of your hands. (R) Second Reading C: R: (Colossians 2:12-14) Baptism makes us sharers in the death and resurrection of Christ. Our Lord has made us new, and Paul challenges us to a new life in Christ. A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians BROTHERS and sisters: You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. And even when you were dead in transgressions and the un-circumcision of your flesh, he brought you to life along with him, having forgiven us all our transgressions; obliterating the bond against us, with its legal claims, which was opposed to us, he also removed it from our midst, nailing it to the cross. The Word of the Lord. All: C: Thanks be to God. Please all rise to give and honor to the Holy Gospel. [Romans 8:15bc] (Stand)

Aleluya-le-luya! Ale-luuuya, ale-luuuya, aleluya-leee-luya! Gospel P: All: P: All: The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A proclamation from the holy Gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. JESUS was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples." He said to them, ''When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test. And he said to them, Suppose one of you has a friend to whom, he goes at midnight and says, Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey and I have nothing to offer him, and he says in reply from within, Do not bother me; the door has already been locked and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything. I tell you, if he does not get up to give the visitors the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence. And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion-when he asks for an egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him? All: C: Sisters and Brothers, The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Please be seated for the listening of the Homily. (Luke 11:1-13)

Homily Good evening, sisters and brothers, I would like to greet the Iglesia ni Cristo a very happy 99th anniversary yesterday! And also to BusinessWorld a happy 26th anniversary yesterday and to the Philippine Star a happy 27th anniversary today!!! And also belated happy birthday to the king of comedy, Dolphy and to the popular music star Princess Sarah Geromino last July 25!!!! Brother Bishops and Priests, Dear Readers, Business persons and the Members of the Iglesia ni Cristo, Go and make disciples of all nations. With these words, Jesus is speaking to each one of us, saying: It was wonderful to take part in the Inquirer Lifestyle Series: Fitness.Fashion with Samsung Festival, to live the faith and the lifestyle and sports sector together with members of the INC and the readers of The Philippine Star from the people in Metro Manila, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, but now you must go, now you must pass on this experience to others. Jesus is calling you to be a disciple with a mission! Today, in the light of the word of God that we have heard, what is the Lord saying to us? Three simple ideas: Go, do not be afraid, and serve. 1. Go. During these days here in Manila for the last Mondays fourth State of Nation Address, you have been able to enjoy the wonderful experience of meeting the President, meeting him together with others, and you have sensed the joy of faith. But the experience of this encounter must not remain locked up in your life or in the small group of your parish, your movement, or your community. That would be like withholding oxygen from a flame that was burning strongly. Faith is a flame that grows stronger the more it is shared and passed on, so that everyone may know, love and confess Jesus Christ, the Lord of life and history (cf. Romans 10:9). Careful, though! Jesus did not say: if you would like to, if you have the time, but: Go and make disciples of all nations. Sharing the experience of faith, bearing witness to the faith, proclaiming the Gospel: this is a command that the Lord entrusts to the whole Church, and that includes you; but it is a command that is born not from a desire for domination or power but from the force of love, from the fact that Jesus first came into our midst and gave us, not a part of himself, but the whole of himself, he gave his life in order to save us and to show us the love and mercy of God. Jesus does not treat us as slaves, but as free men, as friends, as brothers and sisters; and he not only sends us, he accompanies us, he is always beside us in our mission of love. Where does Jesus send us? There are no borders, no limits: he sends us to everyone. The Gospel is for everyone, not just for some. It is not only for those who seem closer to us, more receptive, more welcoming. It is for everyone. Do not be afraid to go and to bring Christ into every area of life, to the fringes of society, even to those who seem farthest away, most indifferent. The Lord seeks all, he wants everyone to feel the warmth of his mercy and his love. In particular, I would like Christs command: Go to resonate in you young people from the Church in the Philippines, engaged in the continental mission promoted by the bishops. Brazil, Latin America, the whole world needs Christ! Saint Paul says: Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel! (1 Corinthians 9:16). This continent has received the proclamation of the Gospel which has marked its history and borne much fruit. Now this proclamation is entrusted also to you, that it may resound with fresh power. The Church needs you, your enthusiasm, your creativity and the joy that is so characteristic of you. A great Apostle of Brazil, Blessed Jos de Anchieta, set off on the mission when he was only nineteen years old. Do you know what the best tool is for evangelizing the young? Another young person. This is the path to follow! 2. Do not be afraid. Some people might think: I have no particular preparation, how can I go and proclaim the Gospel? My dear friend, your fear is not so very different from that of Jeremiah, a young man like you, when he was called by God to be a prophet. We have just heard his words: Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth. God says the same thing to you as he said to Jeremiah: Be not afraid ... for I am with you to deliver you (Jeremiah 1:78). He is with us!

Do not be afraid! When we go to proclaim Christ, it is he himself who goes before us and guides us. When he sent his disciples on mission, he promised: I am with you always (Matthew 28:20). And this is also true for us! Jesus does not leave us alone, he never leaves you alone! He always accompanies you. And then, Jesus did not say: One of you go, but All of you go: we are sent together. Dear young friends, be aware of the companionship of the whole Church and also the communion of the saints on this mission. When we face challenges together, then we are strong, we discover resources we did not know we had. Jesus did not call the Apostles to live in isolation, he called them to form a group, a community. I would like to address you, dear priests concelebrating with me at this Eucharist: you have come to accompany your young people, and this is wonderful, to share this experience of faith with them! But it is a stage on the journey. Please continue to accompany them with generosity and joy, help them to become actively engaged in the Church; never let them feel alone! And at this point I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the youth ministry groups, to the movements and the new communities that accompany the young people in their experience of being Church. They are so creative, so audacious. Carry on and do not be afraid! 3. The final word: serve. The opening words of the psalm that we proclaimed are: Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me (Psalm 95:1). What is this new song? It does not consist of words, it is not a melody, it is the song of your life, it is allowing our life to be identified with that of Jesus, it is sharing his sentiments, his thoughts, his actions. And the life of Jesus is a life for others. It is a life of service. In our Second Reading today, Saint Paul says: I have made myself a slave to all, that I might win the more (1 Corinthians 9:19). In order to proclaim Jesus, Paul made himself a slave to all. Evangelizing means bearing personal witness to the love of God, it is overcoming our selfishness, it is serving by bending down to wash the feet of our brethren, as Jesus did. Three words: Go, do not be afraid, and serve. Follow these three words: Go, do not be afraid, and serve. If you follow these three ideas, you will experience that the one who evangelizes is evangelized, the one who transmits the joy of faith receives joy. Dear young friends, as you return to your homes, do not be afraid to be generous with Christ, to bear witness to his Gospel. In the first Reading, when God sends the prophet Jeremiah, he gives him the power to pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant (1:10). It is the same for you. Bringing the Gospel is bringing Gods power to pluck up and break down evil and violence, to destroy and overthrow the barriers of selfishness, intolerance and hatred, so as to build a new world. Jesus Christ is counting on you! The Church is counting on you! The Pope is counting on you! May Mary, Mother of Jesus Christ and our Mother, always accompany you with her tenderness: Go and make disciples of all nations. Amen. RITE OF MARRIAGE PREPATORY DIALOGUE P: My dear friends, you have come together in this church so that the Lord may seal and strengthen your love in the presence of the Churchs minister and this community. Christ abundantly blesses this love. He has already consecrated you in baptism and now he enriches and strengthens you by a special sacrament so that you may assume the duties of marriage in mutual and lasting fidelity. And so, in the presence of the Church, I ask you to state your intentions. N. and N., have you come here freely and without reservation to give yourselves to each other in marriage? I have. Will you love and honour each other as man and wife for the rest of your lives? I will.

Bride: N., take this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Tayo po ay mag-si-tayo as we proclaim: I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the Faithful P: The Lord Jesus asks us to pray with confidence to the Father. In a special way, we pray for the members and collaborators of the Mission Society of the Philippines, that through their concerted efforts, more people will be drawn to the Father. Blessed be God for ever. With humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted by you, O Lord, and may our sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you, Lord God. Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Pray, brethren (brothers and sisters), that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. May the Lord accept this Sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of His Name, for our good and the good of all his Holy Church. Accept, O Lord, we pray, the offerings which we bring from the abundance of your gifts, that through the powerful working of your grace these most sacred mysteries may sanctify our present way of life and lead us to eternal gladness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just. It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For you so loved the world that in your mercy you sent us the Redeemer, to live like us in all things but sin, so that you might love in us what you loved in your Son, by whose obedience we have been restored to those gifts of yours that, by sinning, we had lost in disobedience. And so, Lord, with all the Angels and Saints, we, too, give you thanks, as in exultation we acclaim: Holy Choir: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of Hosts Heaven and earth are full, are full of your glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes, who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Eucharistic Prayer

Preface VII of the Sundays in Ordinary Time

C: P:

Please kneel. You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the Body + and Blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his Passion, he took bread and giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take this, all of you, and eat of it: for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and, once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying: Take this, all of you, and drink from it: for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.

Memorial Acclamation C: P: Please all stand. The mystery of faith.

Humbly we pray that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your Church, spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Francis the First our Pope with Luis Antonio our Archbishop and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy: welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the blessed Apostles, and all the Saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Purihin natin ang diyos, purihin natin ang iglesia ni Cristo! Words of gratitude addressed to the Iglesia ni Cristo community Holy Father, The 28th World Youth Day is coming to an end. Here before you, Your Holiness, there are young people from every corner of the world. This is a beautiful picture of the young Church, full of hope. Here, Holy Father, are young disciples and missionaries of Jesus Christ. These young people who have

come to Rio with their gaze directed towards Christ the Redeemer of Corcovado that watches over this wonderful city have accepted as their life plan the missionary mandate of the Master: Go and make disciples of all nations! (Matthew 28:19). This has really been a marvellous few days of extensive planting of the Gospel. Around 300 bishops have given catechesis in 27 different languages; there have been so many opportunities for silent prayer; many young people have received the sacrament of reconciliation; there has been so much joy at being together as brothers and sisters to witness to the world that it is beautiful to be Christian, and that it is worthwhile following Christ in our lives. So many decisions have been pondered and made at this time: important choices as you have taught us the option for Christian marriage or priesthood or consecrated life. How can we not thank the Lord for this gift of grace! Holy Father, since your election to the See of Peter, these young people have discovered that you are the Successor of Peter, an affectionate father and a friend who can be trusted. Your cordial simple words provide them with answers to many of the questions that trouble their hearts. They have so much need to hear you urge them on with your heartfelt words of encouragement: Do not be sad men and women! A Christian is never sad; Let nobody rob you of your hope!; Reach for high ideals, for the big things!; Do not be afraid to go against the current, even though it is not easy!; Let us keep Christ in our lives so that we can safeguard others and safeguard creation! These on-going words of advice stimulate young people to go beyond themselves and to go out to the existential peripheries of our world to bring the Good News to the poor, the excluded, those on the margins, and thereby to touch the suffering flesh of Christ himself. Now, as we conclude this wonderful unforgettable time spent in Manila, Holy Father, the young people, with hearts full of joy, would like to express their devotion and gratitude. Thank you for being with us at this WYD! Thank you for your words addressed to these young people, words of hope that point the way along the road. Together with you, Holy Father, we would like to express our gratitude to former Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim. It was he who chose Manila to host the annual Inquirer Lifestyle Series Fitness Fashion Festival, and he gave young people a beautiful message to guide them in their spiritual preparation. We would like to renew our gratitude to Blessed John Paul II for the providential gift of WYD in the Church, as we await his now imminent canonisation. Holy Father, the time has come for the missionary sending-forth. At the conclusion of this Month, the young people, send forth by you, are ready to go out to the whole world as apostles of the new evangelisation. To a few of these young people representing the five continents, you, Holy Father, will give a small statue of Christ the Redeemer of Corcovado, a sign of the missionary mandate they have received: Go and make disciples of all nations! (cf Mt 28:19) Holy Father, bless this people of young disciples and missionaries of Jesus Christ. They are ready to go forth from this immense open Cenacle just as the apostles came out from the Cenacle at Pentecost to give witness of their faith, even to the ends of the earth. Thank you, Bro. Manalo. Angelus Message Dear Brothers and Sisters, At the end of this celebration, in which we have raised up to God our song of praise and thanksgiving for every grace received during this Sundays celebration, I would like once more to thank Fr. Mario Sobrejuanite, SSP, and Fr. Glenn Paul Gomez, SVD for their kind words. I thank you too, dear young friends, for all the joy you have given me in these days. Thank you! I carry each one of you in my heart! Now let us turn our gaze to our heavenly Mother, the Virgin Mary. During these days, Jesus has insistently and repeatedly invited you to be his missionary disciples; you have listened to the voice of the Good Shepherd, calling you by name, and you have recognized the voice calling you

(cf. John 10:4). Could it be that in this voice, resounding in your heart, you have felt the tenderness of Gods love? Have you experienced the beauty of following Christ together with others, in the Church? Have you understood more deeply that the Gospel is the answer to the desire for an even fuller life? (cf. John 10:10). Is this true? The Immaculate Virgin intercedes for us in heaven as a good mother who watches over her children. May Mary teach us by her life what it means to be a missionary disciple. Every time we pray the Angelus, we recall the event that changed the history of mankind for ever. When the Angel Gabriel proclaimed to Mary that she would become the Mother of Jesus the Saviour, even without understanding the full significance of that call, she trusted God and replied: Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word (Luke 1:38). But what did she do immediately afterwards? On receiving the grace of being the Mother of the Incarnate Word, she did not keep that gift to herself; with a sense of responsibility, she set off from her home and went in haste to help her kinswoman Elizabeth, who was in need of assistance (cf. Luke 1:38-39); she carried out an act of love, of charity, and of practical service, bringing Jesus who was in her womb. And she did all this in haste! There, my dear friends, we have our model. She who received the most precious gift from God, as her immediate response sets off to be of service and to bring Jesus. Let us ask Our Lady to help us too to give Christs joy to our families, our companions, our friends, to everyone. Never be afraid to be generous with Christ. It is worth it! Go out and set off with courage and generosity, so that every man and every woman may meet the Lord. Dear friends, we have an appointment for the next edition of the Festival. Through Our Ladys maternal intercession, let us ask for the light of the Holy Spirit upon the journey that will lead us to this next stage in our joyful celebration of faith and the love of Christ. And now let us pray together: Angelus P: All: P: All: P: All: P: All: P: All: P: All: P: All: P: The Angel of the Lord declared into Mary. And she conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit.
