KATCHAFIRE & SONS OF ZION

THE POWERSTATION
8PM, $30, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

These two are some of the most famed names in Kiwi rock history. Both individually, and as members of iconic bands such as Th Dudes, The Mutton Birds and Blam Blam Blam, these two have graced pubs around the country with hits such as Loyal and Slice of Heaven.

As the trademark sound of Kiwi Summers, Katchafire are essentially a natural treasure. Having only just recently returned from a successful tour around the world, these masters of the groove are back to spread good vibes in the motherland. Sons of Zion will be sharing the stage, and will put proof to their talent live.

This gig at Puppies is part of Miss Crawleys album release/tour, promoting her new offering All In My Head. Having performed with illustrious names such as Jools Holland, John Mayer and Paul Weller, this saucy songstress is a force to be reckoned with. Shes been nominated for the Silver Scroll twice already, and if she keeps it up shell be taking it home soon.

Devilskin are, simply put, more than just a band; theyre a full-blown experience. To be honest, youd be selling yourself short if you missed out on the raucous on-stage tenacity this rock outfit has been garnering much attention for. Witness soaring vocals and wondrous word-weaving, all to the sound of a powerful rock ensemble.

Many of us consider Rockquest to be the breeding ground for some of the best rock groups in New Zealand, and has yet to let us down. Catch the next big thing while theyre still in highschool. Alumni include: Midnight Youth, Opshop, Die!Die!Die!, The Datsuns, The Black Seeds, King Kapisi, Elemeno P and many more.

I realise that weve all been instructed by the age-old adage not to judge a book by its cover. Fuck that. Some bands just have the best names, and I swear it bleeds into the music. I dont know if it took you by surprise either, but these lads honestly popped out of nowhere. All of a sudden, my Facebook feed was littered with these photos of chaps with drawn-on faces, and dance music trended on the social listening lists. New wave house music, come on in.

Anything with the suffix palooza basically guarantees that therell be shenanigans aplenty, and that youre in for a good time. Tankapalooza wont be letting down the trend. Prepare for one hell of a night, as 38 bands grace 3 stages, for 12 hours straight. Christmas comes early for those in Palmy.

THOMAS OLIVER
LEIGH SAWMILL
8PM, $20, DASHTICKETS.CO.NZ

Mr. Oliver is something of a musical curiosity. Venturing deep into the pockets of the sonic unknown, he emerges with all manner of intriguing sound to resounding accolades. Dipping his fingers into various jars, his breadth of music spans from roots, rock and blues right up to the realm of drum and bass vocals. Simply captivating.

I cant help throwing the clich out there but it really does feel like Mechanical Bull is a return-toform sort of. Whilst Come Around Sundown, their previous effort, started well by the second half there was a collapse into mediocrity. And that cant be forgiven. Any return to a Sex on Fire Pt 2 was never gonna happen either. Now Mechanical Bull might not have true fish-across-face-outthere-surprises its by far their most seasoned effort to date. And, possibly their most conventional. For me I need limbs to occasionally go out on. I need blood spilt on the console, souls bared. I need evidence of life! So, despite how focused Kings of Leon have been, this one still sounds assured and familiar. And with receding hairlines and several years of tabloid music press covers and mortgage sized parenthoods under their belts, theres really no reason not to get comfortable and keep those cheques coming in. So, to that end, embracing AOR/ classic-rock and serving up a big slice of the denim-clad 70s vibe is a good safe move. The single Supersoaker is a dead giveaway, with layers of good ol Merseyside chug, cross checked with Happy Days oversexed sentimentality - all too clear on the accompanying video. Mechanical Bull is sequenced like a good ol vinyl record, with an obvious Side One (completing with the heartrending ballad Wait For Me) and a

distinctly different Side Two (which opens with the slightly feeble funk of Family Tree). Throughout, theres that buzz of wooden speaker analog warmth common on 50s Jazz records, a sort of lived in feel making you know the songs, even before youve heard them. All deceptively simple. Sparse, basic chord progressions peppered with the occasional arena-sized crescendo and expected soaring chorus. Predictably, the Kings and their longtime collaborator Angelo Petraglia know how to structure a track for maximum effect. Wait for Me builds like a childs block set then crashes down, contemplating the destruction of a second before building again, and again, and again. Rockers Dont Matter and Temple show spirit, Rock City is like a handbrake in the car park and the Joshua Tree imitation Beautiful War is all about the cerebral thunderstorm.

FILM OF THE WEEK

RUSH
directed by Ron Howard Starring Daniel Brhl, Chris Hemsworth and Olivia Wilde

This satirical horror/mystery/thriller flick takes the piss out of all the genres tropes and stereotypes all whilst delivering a top-notch movie. Featuring some impressive CGI, fantastic serious-yet-not-seriousohmygod-were-so-meta acting and plotlines, this is an entertaining watch by all means.

THU 26 SEP
TURBO
GENERAL RELEASE
Ron Howards Rush is an exuberant, diverting dramatisation of the legendary rivalry between Formula One racers James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Brhl) over the course of the fateful Grand Prix season of 1976. Its combo of hair-raising behind-the-wheel action, heated off-track controversies and stormy relationship soap is hardly earthshattering stuff, but Howard and writer Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon) do squeeze sufficient dramatic tension out of the opponents wildly different temperaments, while acknowledging their shared sense of purpose and conviction. Hunt is the blonde-andblue-eyed Brit, a hard-partying, hotheaded playboy with raw driving talent to spare; Lauda, on the other hand, is a brusquely pragmatic Austrian who doesnt have time for social frivolities, single-mindedly focused on the race to a fault. Hemsworth and Brhl are both terrific, portraying the escalating competitive ribbing between the pair with good humour and genuine passion. Predictably, the women get sidelined: Olivia Wilde is wasted as Hunts model girlfriend Suzy Miller, Josphine de La Baumes role as Laudas wife ultimately reduced a series of wordless glances, which admittedly, she does remarkably well. Technically, Howard doesnt do anything that John Frankenheimer didnt already achieve with Grand Prix back in 1966, but some of it sure is dang pretty: armed with Dogme veteran/regular Danny Boyle cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, Rushs racing sequences are gussied up with expressionistic splashes of hot, saturated colour that heighten the nerve-rattling, feverishly adrenalised view from inside the cockpit.
WRITTEN BY AARON YAP, FLICKS.CO.NZ

This is the story of the little snail who could. All Turbo ever wanted was to race with the big boys, but his unfortunate predicament (the fact that hes a snail) kind of gets in the way. Thanks to a freak accident involving the supercharger of a drag racer, the films eponymous hero finally gets the chance to test his mettle at the Indy 500.

Martin Doherty
FROM CHVRCHES

WRITTEN BY JAMES MANNING

The whole idea is a bit crazy for me. Coming to the other side of the world [where] people want to be at your shows, or even talk over a cell phone about the band. The idea referred to is fame, a concept Martin Doherty, the synthesizer and sampler player for Scottish electronic pop trio Chvrches, is still coming to terms with. And fairly so. In just over a year Doherty and band mates Lauren Mayberry (lead vocalist) and Ian Cook (synthesizers, guitar, bass) have been catapulted from the blogosphere into critical acclaim, and show no signs of slowing down. Since posting Lies online last May, the Glaswegian trio have been placed in the top five BBC Sound of 2013, performed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, supported Depeche Mode on a stadium tour, and have headlined tours throughout the UK and USA including an award-winning performance at SXSW. This success has flown them to Australia for three sold out shows, where Doherty is currently calling from. Consciously aware of the hype trap many up-and-coming bands fall into, Doherty explains that keeping focus solely on the music has been the only way forward. Weve seen it so many times before - people are writing about [a band] at this point and then they disappear just as fast as they arrived. There comes a time with the hype [when] they (the band) have to produce the goods otherwise people are no longer interested in them. Dont get me wrong its not that were ungrateful. I mean, its important; its been insane and its been really positive. But ultimately were never gonna be that band that reads its own press and is obsessed with what people are saying about them. The only goal was to make a record that we were proud of, and I think weve done that. The music itself takes influence from Tubeway Army, Prince, Depeche Mode and Kate Bush, and is a brand of electronic pop that stands out from a genre so overrun with soundalikes. Neon-brite synths clash with cut-up bursts of colour, and mixtures of electronic tones build into hookdriven crescendos. Its a sound that places Chvrches comfortably between the experimental melodies of Robyn and desolate atmosphere of The Knife.

Enhancing their strange spell is the vocal delivery of Mayberry, whose voice is laced with a crystal-clear purity and lyrics honest and bold. Contrasting her vocals with the music is where the bands strength lies and is a balance difficult to get just right, admits Doherty. Were very aware of how pure and sweet Laurens voice can be. In a way its something we consider as a real positive [factor] for the music. I think she afford(s) [us] to twist the production a little bit harsher, make it a little more interesting, do weirder things with it. Its something we explore over the course of the album, the Glaswegian notes. Although strangers to international fame the trio are more than familiar with the music industry. Cook played with Scottish alternative rock groups Aerogramme and The Unwinding Hours, Doherty with shoegaze outfit The Twilight Sad, and Mayberry sung for the indie-folk collective Blue Sky Archives. And while their current music is a departure from their rock based roots, Doherty says it was an absolutely logical progression. Its interesting, because even when I was in The Twilight Sad I was on keyboards, so it was a thing that sort of came naturally. It wasnt really that big of a leap, I had always written music on keyboards or instruments like synthesisers or drum machines. Their debut record - The Bones Of What You Believe - will be released on September 23rd and was produced entirely by the band, a decision made not only in confidence with the production equipment, but with a staunch protection over their creative process. Even though [we] started doing these record deals and everything around us was changing, [we made sure] as little of the day-to-day creative process of being in the band changed as possible. Chvrches are that rare breed who have the balls to stand by their own values in an industry orchestrated by media hype, and are sure to be a promising act to follow.

BATTLEFIELD 4 BETA DATES ANNOUNCED

Electronic Arts have announced the dates for the upcoming Battlefield 4 beta testing period, along with three different ways to gain access to it. Launching on October 2nd, the first phase of the beta includes the siege of Shanghai map, which can be played in either Conquest or Domination mode. To get in on October 2nd, however, you will need to meet at least one of three possible entry criteria: either pre-order the Battlefield 4 PC Digital Deluxe Edition (on EAs Origin service), be an existing Battlefield 3 Premium member, or a registered owner of Medal of Honor Warfighter Limited Edition or Digital Deluxe Edition. If you dont meet any of the above requirements, you will still be able to have a go, but not until October 4th, when the game enters open beta. The closed and open beta phases will be accessible on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC - the full game will then release on these same systems on November 1st.

KILLZONE MERCENARY REVIEW

If youre looking for a portable first-person shooter, Killzone: Mercenary is the real deal. Its not perfect - something Ill talk more about in a moment - but by gum, its still mind-bogglingly amazing in all sorts of important ways. For a start, it looks outrageously good. Like, is the Vita secretly about twice the power all the other developers seem to think it is? levels of impressive. Secondly, it plays very well indeed. Theres a proper campaign in here and its not your standard youre part of the resistance / attacking force / army, go out there and push them back / drive them out / kill them all fare either. Sure, playing as a mercenary isnt that different, and really its just an excuse to enable the one man behind enemy lines missions the game is entirely made up of, but as context it works, and the cinematics that link everything together are fullyformed, providing more than enough motivation and explanation for the kill anything that moves action. The controls are mostly very impressive. Extra controls laid on top of the standard buttons youd expect include the ability to (optionally) tilt the Vita to provide some level of fine control over zoomed-in aiming. Once youve switched the function on, you simply tilt the Vita while holding in the zoom button and youll be able to tweak your aiming location by moving your handheld. It works extremely well; so much so that Ill be looking for the same option on all games in the future, even those that only appear on home consoles. Level designs are intricately detailed and well laid out, providing a solid frame for the largely arena-like shooting sections, as well as some fun run-and-gun sequences. Theres even some of those big, cinematic moments youd expect from a modern console shooter, although not as many (which makes sense, given the constraints of the platform.) Killzone: Mercenary is a seriously impressive game. Its a little on the short side, and has a few little quirks all its own, but theres no question that developers Guerilla Cambridge have delivered the goods. I still cant quite believe the technical feats it accomplishes, to be perfectly honest. If you already own a Vita, get it; if you dont yet lay claim to one, the argument in favor of the console just got even more compelling.

WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR

MARK TREMONI
When I was growing up, in my home town, there was a park called Angel Park, where all the crime occurred; where the drug dealers hung out and where there was always a sense of danger and the unknown, notes guitarist Mark Tremonti. The park was on Alter Road, (Orlando Florida). Parents would warn kids to stay away. It had the sense of danger and risk. To get to the park, you crossed Alter Bridge. It was the perfect metaphor - heading in to the unknown - when Creed broke up and we started this new band. Of course, Creed has been defunct now for a while, re-unions excepted but the three main members Tremonti (lead guitar, backing vocals), Brian Marshall (bass) and Scott Phillips (drums, percussion) had something to prove when they grouped up with guitarist and vocalist Myles Kennedy. Creed had clocked up massive airplay with stadium quality numbers like With Arms Wide Open, before the inevitable crash and burn with vocalist Scott Strapp, whos particular brand of Christian Rock was threatening a degree of artistic polarisation. Tremonti does burn bridges, so he wont say he felt suffocated by Strapps particular Pentocostal-tinged religion inclination but his quite, careful dodgy of the questions gives it away. I write all kinds of music. I could write a Creed-type song, an Alter Bridge or something for my own tour, he claims, nodding that in the war of doctrines, hes Switzerland. But Alter Bridges latest album is not the arena friendly anathematic material of their Creed days, or their previous efforts either.

FROM ALTER BRIDGE

Fortress is an unrelenting, onslaught, especially the new single Addicted to Pain. Tremonti and Kennedy tag team their heaviest, yet most melodic work to date. We started exploring what we could do with the genre, when we made (the album and title song) Blackbird, that track was us experimenting with different tempos, ideas and directions. Its interesting that you ask if Im offended by the suggestion that the sound is cold and clinical. I guess to a degree that was the character I was after. Myles and I work hard to get that good at following each other. Tremonti has always had an ear for good tune so the process to bring an edgier, darker feel was always undelayed by a need to produce a good song regardless of its execution. Themes like regret, sadness, loneliness, pain and addiction are prevalent this time. but were not totally dismal, he quips, in full laid back drawl. I can hear him smiling over the phone, and thats ok! The new album is more of an assault than previous work. It was time to really let the guns out. Of late Tremonti has been out on the road promoting his own dark solo release, All I was, while Kennedy gigged with Slash and popped over to the UK for an audition with the revived Led Zeppelin. He told us, and we were all for it. So he flew out meet Jason (Bonham), Jimi and Robert. Yeah, it must have been awe inspiring to meet the guys that invented the music you play. Who knows, maybe what were doing will inspire another generation too, keep the cycle going. And away from Angel Park, we hope!
