Pre-Lesson Expectations
(Provide a brief statement of the context for the lesson. Where should the lesson fit in the sequence of the class? What should a student know before beginning the lesson?) Students should have knowledge of how to play chess. Students should have a background of the Civil War.

Activities
(Provide a step-by-step sequence of instructions for the teacher to teach the lesson. It is very important to be as specific as possible. A teacher should be able to follow the sequence and know not only what they should be doing in each step but also what the expectations are for the students in the appropriate steps.) Step1- On a large cemented area draw out a chess board. Step2- Write out the names of each chess piece on an index card. Step3- Write out the important battles and what happened during them on an index card. Step4- Give the index cards to the appropriate side and to the appropriate people. To accomplish this you must count the major battles that you want to include in the game, (in this case there will be eleven). Next, you map out a chess game that will end in eleven moves with the appropriate team winning. Some students will have a piece card, such as bishop, and a move card with the square name and the description of the battle. The idea is that each move represents a battle.

Assessment
(Provide an assessment plan to allow the teacher to evaluate a students progress toward meeting the objective(s) of the lesson. The assessment must include a rubric that tells a teacher how to grade the proposed assessment tool.) Students could be given a worksheet asking them to match the description of the event to the actual name of the event.
