What Makes an Effective Executive

An effective executive does not need to be a leader in the sense that the term is now
most commonly used. Harry Truman did not have one ounce of charisma, for example,
yet he was among the most effective chief executives in the U.S. history. Similarly, some
of the best business and nonprofit CEOs I've worked with over a 65-year consulting
career were not stereotypical leaders. They were all over the map in terms of their
personalities, attitudes, values, strengths, and weaknesses. They ranged from
extroverted to nearly reclusive, from easygoing to controlling, from generous to
parsimonious.

...

The first practice is to ask what needs to be done. Note that the question is not "What do
I want to do?" Asking what has to be done, and taking the question seriously, is crucial
for managerial success. Failure to ask this question will render even the ablest
executive ineffectual.
When Truman became president in 1945, he knew exactly what he wanted to do:
complete the economic and social reforms of Roosevelt's New Deal, which had been
deferred by World War II. As soon as he asked what needed to be done, though, Truman
realized that foreign affairs had absolute priority. He organized his working day so that
it began with tutorials on foreign policy by the secretaries of state and defense. As a
result, he became the most effective president in foreign affairs the United States has
ever known. He contained Communism in both Europe and Asia and, with the Marshall
Plan, triggered 50 years of worldwide economic growth.
Similarly, Jack Welch realized that what needed to be done at General Electric when he
took over as chief executive was not the overseas expansion he wanted to launch. It was
getting rid of GE businesses that, no matter how profitable, could not be number one or
number two in their industries.
The answer to the question "What needs to be done?" almost always contains more than
one urgent task. But effective executives do not splinter themselves. They concentrate
on one task if at all possible. If they are among those people - a sizable minority - who
work best with a change of pace in their working day, they pick two tasks. I have never

(2/7)
encountered an executive who remains effective while tackling more than two tasks at a
time. Hence, after asking what needs to be done, the effective executive sets priorities
and sticks to them. For a CEO, the priority task might be redefining the company's
mission. For a unit head, it might be redefining the unit's relationship with
headquarters. Other tasks, no matter how important or appealing, are postponed.
However, after completing the original top-priority task, the executive resets priorities
rather than moving on to number two from the original list. He asks, "What must be
done now?" This generally results in new and different priorities.

enabled host and at least one user input device, the wireless interface device
comprising: a wireless interface unit that wirelessly interfaces with the wirelessly
enabled host; a processing unit operably coupled to the wireless interface unit; an
input/output unit operably coupled to the wireless interface unit and to the processing
unit, wherein the input/output unit interfaces to the at least one user input device;
wherein the processing unit and the wireless interface unit interact to determine when
the wireless interface unit has established a link with the wirelessly enabled host; and
wherein when the wireless interface unit has established a link with the wirelessly
enabled host, the processing unit interacts with the input/output unit to direct the
input/output unit to output a link established indication.

2. The wireless interface device of claim 1, further comprising a power management

unit that manages power consumption of the wireless interface device, wherein the
wireless interface device supports a plurality of power consumption modes including a
busy mode and at least one power saving mode.

3. The wireless interface device of claim 2, wherein when the wireless interface device is
in the busy mode the processing unit interacts with the input/output unit to provide a
first link established indication.

4. The wireless interface device of claim 3, wherein: when the wireless interface device
is in the at least one power saving mode the wireless interface unit enters a parked
mode of operation; and when the wireless interface is in the parked mode of operation,
the processing unit interacts with the input/output unit to provide a second link
established indication.

5. The wireless interface device of claim 2, wherein when the wireless interface device
transitions from a power saving mode to the busy mode, the processing unit interacts

(4/7)
with the input/output unit to provide a link being attempted indication.

6. The wireless interface device of claim 1, wherein the wireless interface unit supports
one or more versions of the Bluetooth interface standard.

7. The wireless interface device of claim 1, wherein the wireless interface device enters
one of a plurality of power consumption operating states comprising: busy mode in
which all components of the wireless interface device are powered and operational; idle
mode in which the wireless interface unit performs first power conserving operations;
and power down mode in which the wireless interface unit is powered down and the
processing unit enters one of a plurality of reduced power operations.

8. A method for controlling the operation of a wireless interface device that services
communications between a wirelessly enabled host and at least one user input device,
the wireless interface device including a wireless interface unit, a processing unit, and
an input/output unit that couples to the at least one user input device, the method
comprising: the wireless interface unit establishing a wireless link with the wirelessly
enabled host; the wireless interface unit interacting with the processor to indicate to the
processing that the wireless interface unit has established a link with the wirelessly
enabled host; the processing unit interacting with the input/output unit to direct the
input/output unit to output a link established indication; and the input/output unit
outputting a link established indication.

Description

CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION

[0001] This application is a continuation of U.S. application Ser. No. 10/403,531, filed
Mar. 31, 2003, which is hereby incorporated herein by reference in its entirety for all
purposes.

BACKGROUND

[0002] 1. Technical Field

(5/7)
[0003] The present invention relates generally to digital computers; and more
particularly to wireless interface devices coupled to digital computers.

[0004] 2. Related Art

[0005] Digital computers have been known in the art for years. Personal digital
computers typically include a case, a video display, and one or more input/output
devices. The case typically includes a power supply, a cooling fan, a motherboard,
interface ports, peripheral cards, a disk drive, and other components. Contained on the
motherboard are a processor, memory, a processor chip set, and one or more peripheral
buses. The peripheral cards interface input/output devices with the motherboard via the
peripheral buses. Other input/output devices may couple directly to the motherboard
via appropriate connectors, for example, devices coupled via a parallel port, devices
coupled via a serial port, and devices coupled via a USB.

[0006] Wireless communication technology has rapidly advanced over the past few years.
Resultantly, computer input/output devices are now being called upon to wirelessly
communicate with their "host" computers. Wireless keyboards and mice now couple via
wireless connections to their host computers. These "wireless" input devices provide
great benefits in that they require no wired connections with their host computers.
However, the lack of a wired connection also requires that the wireless input devices
contain their own power supply, that is, that they be battery powered. In order to extend
the life of their batteries the wireless input devices often support power saving modes of
operation. Unfortunately, none of these power savings modes reduces power
consumption to levels that would extend battery life more than a few weeks. Resultantly,
the benefits achieved via wireless connectivity is met or exceeded by the repeated chore
and expense of frequently changing batteries in the device.

[0007] Another shortcoming of these devices relates to their perceived and actual
reliability. Because these wireless input devices do not physically couple to the
supported computing device, a user cannot determine when the device is "coupled" to
the supported computing device. Non-responsiveness of the wireless input device may
be caused by a failed device, low batteries, non-operational wireless link, or another
operational difficulty. Because users cannot determine what causes the wireless input
device to be non-responsive, they become frustrated and migrate toward wired
peripheral devices.

(6/7)
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0008] Thus in order to overcome the shortcomings of the prior devices among other
shortcomings within the wireless user interface realm, a wireless interface device
constructed according to the present invention services communications between a
wirelessly enabled host and at least one user input device. The wireless interface device
includes a wireless interface unit, a processing unit, an input/output unit, and may
include a power management unit. According to the present invention, the processing
unit and the wireless interface unit interact to determine when the wireless interface
unit has established a link with the wirelessly enabled host. Further, when the wireless
interface unit has established a link with the wirelessly enabled host, the processing
unit interacts with the input/output unit to direct the input/output unit to output a link
established indication.
