Oracle's Unbreakable Linux

Unbreakable Linux is a support program that provides enterprises with world-class, award winning, global support for Linux while significantly reducing IT infrastructure costs. In response to demands for true enterprise-quality Linux support Oracle offers Linux operating system support. Oracle delivers high quality, comprehensive, and integrated support solutions to ensure enterprise success with the Linux operating system. Oracle's Unbreakable Linux is a support initiative, not a distribution; Oracle Linux is identical to Red Hat Enterprise Linux with the addition of customer-critical patches. Oracle Unbreakable Linux Support covers systems running binaries compiled by either Red Hat or Oracle.

Oracle Linux
Oracle Linux is identical to the corresponding Red Hat Enterprise Linux(RHEL) version, but with the trademarks and logos removed. Oracle provides free downloads of Oracle Linux ISOs. Customers who purchase Linux support from Oracle have access to Oracle Linux ISOs, but do not have access to the Red Hat built ISOs. ISOs are built for x86 and x86-64 architectures.

Certification and Support Policy for Oracle Products on Oracle Linux and Oracle VM
If you feel that you cannot implement the following policy please contact Wim Coekaerts ( wim.coekaerts@oracle.com ) or Edward Screven ( edward.screven@oracle.com ). Every product running on Linux released by Oracle must be listed as certified and supported on Oracle Linux and on virtualized Oracle Linux running on Oracle VM. This should be reflected in all the external and internal facing documentation and statements, such as data sheets, websites, slides, My Oracle Support (formerly Metalink) notes etc. It applies to all future and existing products. In addition, upcoming Oracle products running on Windows will have to be listed as certified and supported when running in virtualized Windows environments on Oracle VM.

Cases to Consider
Linux RHEL vs. Oracle Linux: If an Oracle product has ever been certified against and supported on any version of RHEL, it should also be automatically certified and supported on the corresponding version of Oracle Linux (e.g., RHEL4->Oracle Linux 4, RHEL5->Oracle Linux 5). Note that there is no expectation of product certification carrying over across different releases of Oracle Linux, such as Oracle Linux 4 and Oracle Linux 5. Oracle mandates that all development and QA systems run Oracle Linux, not Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Non-Virtual vs. Virtual: Furthermore, if a product is supported and certified on Oracle Linux, it shall also be certified and supported in the virtualized installation of the same version of Oracle Linux running on OVM. (e.g. Oracle Linux 4 -> Oracle Linux 4 on OVM, Oracle Linux 5 -> Oracle Linux 5 on OVM) Windows As stated above, every planned Oracle product that will be certified on Windows must also be listed as certified and supported when running on Windows in virtualized environment with OVM.

Product teams responsibility

9/14/2013 5:34 PM

UnbreakableLinux - linux.oraclecorp.com

http://linux.oraclecorp.com/linux.oraclecorp/UnbreakableLinux

You must insure that all the statements and documentation for your products are updated to reflect the Oracle Linux/OVM certification status. No additional testing is required from your teams. The certifications as stated above carry over automatically. A product team is obviously welcome to perform additional testing on these configurations, however this should not cause delays in certification at product release time. Guidelines for Documentation Oracle Linux is the Linux OS of choice for Oracle Products. We would like to make sure Oracle Linux gets the right coverage on all our internal and external documentation, as well as websites. Please let's continue monitoring the documentation of all our products avoiding situations where Linux OSs such as RHEL and/or SLES are the only mentioned and always make sure Oracle Linux is part of the list of Linux OSs certified with our products. If you are working (with partners) on any collaterals, benchmarks, presentations, white papers or initiatives that includes RHEL, please make sure you also add Oracle Linux or better, make sure you start the project on Oracle Linux. Any documentation on RHEL only , will be stopped or you will be asked to modify it to include Oracle Linux.

Linux Team responsibility

The Linux Engineering Team is responsible for assuring that this automatic certification is accomplished and maintained seamlessly without requiring any additional testing by the product teams. Any issues related to Oracle Linux and Oracle VM are to be resolved by the Linux Engineering team rather than by the product teams. If you have any questions about the above policy please contact Michele Resta ( michele.resta@oracle.com ).

Oracle Linux and RHEL Parity

For released products supported on RHEL4 or RHEL5, x86 and x86_64 Oracle Linux support is implied. No certification is necessary, but you are required to update existing documentation and websites to add Oracle Linux information. For unreleased products, Oracle Linux must be the primary development platform and the first Linux OS that is certified. It is up to each product line to decide which release of Oracle Linux should be certified. Oracle Linux releases are baseline certifications: in other words, you may select to only certify on Oracle Linux releases after a particular update level (e.g. Oracle Linux 4 update 3 and higher). Products will not require re-certification on subsequent update releases. Please do not request feature enhancements for Oracle Linux, as they are not possible. Only customer-critical bug fixes are allowed in Oracle Linux.

updates. Oracle Linux Updates do not require retesting or recertification (e.g. Oracle Linux 4.4 -> 4.5 -> 4.6) Major Oracle Linux releases will need certification (e.g. Oracle Linux 4 -> Oracle Linux 5)

Known Bugs
Red Hat released RHEL4 update 7, kernel 2.6.9-78.EL, which includes a known bug (Red Hat Bugzilla 455525) that causes the Linux kernel to crash at startup of the Oracle Enterprise Manager agent. Bug has been fixed on Oracle Linux 4.7 . For more information please refer to My Oracle Support (Metalink) Note 729543.1 Glibc: please see bug reports: https://bug.oraclecorp.com/pls/bug /webbug_print.show?c_rptno=6790001 and https://bugzilla.redhat.com /show_bug.cgi?id=405781. The bug is about calloc() not returning zeroed memory when the process address space is locked by a call to mlockall. Versions of glibc affected are: RHEL-4.6 and Oracle Linux-4.6: glibc-2.3.4-2.39, all architectures. RHEL-5.1 and Oracle Linux-5.1: glibc-2.5-18, all achitectures. SLES10 SP2: glibc-2.4-31.54 , all architectures This bug has been fixed in RHEL5.2 glibc and Oracle Linux 5.2 (glibc-2.7-54). It is also fixed in RHEL4.7 and Oracle Linux 4.7 (glibc-2.3.4-2.41). We are currently testing a fix from Novell for SLES10. The bug was not present in earlier versions of glibc and it is not present in RHEL3. Please see My Oracle Support (Metalink) Note 732847.1 RHEL only , will be stopped or you will be asked to modify it to include Oracle Linux.

Linux Internal Support

All internal Oracle Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments are supported by the Oracle Linux team. Oracle does not have a support contract with Red Hat, and if you are still using Red Hat support please contact Michele Resta ( michele.resta@oracle.com ) immediately. Please consult http://wiki.us.oracle.com/calpg/bug.us for instructions on filing bugs against Oracle Linux.

Oracle Development Environment on Linux

Oracle Products today should be built on Oracle Linux systems and then ported to other platforms. For general Linux support, please contact the Oracle Linux support team. If you are part of a recent acquisition, and still transitioning your product's development environment to Oracle Linux, the Oracle Linux engineering team provides supports to you regardless of whether your applications were compiled on Oracle Linux or Red Hat Enterprise Linux. You can file bugs against Oracle Linux on BugDB, for more information please refer to this page: http://wiki.us.oracle.com/calpg/bug.us.

Building your product on Oracle Linux 4 and Oracle Linux 5

9 of 13 9/14/2013 5:34 PM

UnbreakableLinux - linux.oraclecorp.com

http://linux.oraclecorp.com/linux.oraclecorp/UnbreakableLinux

Oracle Linux 4 (and updates): provides glibc 2.3.4 and gcc 3.4 Oracle Linux 5 (and updates): provides glibc 2.5 and gcc-4.1 The above combinations of compilers and libraries will not change during the lifetime of the Oracle Linux 4 and 5 releases. Relinking of your application on a given version of Oracle Linux if the application's object files were built on an older version of Oracle Linux or RHEL is not supported and will not work in general. This is due to incompatibilities between the different versions of many of the libraries. Errors such as missing or duplicate symbols can occur whenever a newer version of a library is used to relink the same object files that were originally compiled using an older one. We therefore strongly discourage such practice. Using dynamically linked libraries can help avoid this problem. Oracle Linux does not provide support for the Intel compiler.

Best practice use of compat packages

Even though Oracle Linux 4 and 5 provide several old components for development use, be advised that support for these is very limited, and will likely be obsoleted. Whenever you generate a new release of your product make sure that you try your best to remove its dependencies on such older packages. Oracle Linux 4 provides the following compatibility packages: compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-47.3 compat-gcc-32-3.2.3-47.3 compat-gcc-32-c++-3.2.3-47.3 compat-glibc-2.3.2-95.30 compat-glibc-headers-2.3.2-95.30 compat-libgcc-296-2.96-132.7.2 compat-libstdc++-296-2.96-132.7.2 Oracle Linux 5 provides the following compatibility packages: compat-gcc-34-3.4.6-4 compat-gcc-34-c++-3.4.6-4 compat-gcc-34-g77-3.4.6-4 compat-glibc-2.3.4-2.26 compat-glibc-headers-2.3.4-2.26 compat-libf2c-34-3.4.6-4 compat-libgcc-296-2.96-138 compat-libstdc++-296-2.96-138 compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-61
