Briefly explain the present-day condition mentioned in paragraph 1 They must be able to recognize propaganda, to analyze it, and to appraise it. 2. Explain the difference between propaganda and scientific analysis The propaganda is trying to put something across, good or bad, whereas the scientific is trying to discover truth and fact. 3. What is difference between devices of name calling and glittering generalities? Name calling is a device to make us from judgment without examining the evidence on which it should be based. Here the propagandist appeals to our heart and fear. Glittering generalities is device by which the propagandist identifies his program with virtue by use virtue words. Here he appeals to our emotions of love, generosity, and brotherhood 4. Explain the devices of transfer and card stacking Transfer is a device by which the propagandist carries over the authority, sanction, and prestige of something we respect and revere to something he would have us accept. Card stacking is device in which the propagandist employs all the arts of deception to win our support for himself, his group, nation, race, policy, practice, belief, or ideal. 5. The essay asserts that our emotion is the stuff with which propagandist work Without our emotion they are helpless; with it, harnessing it to their purposes, they can make us glow with pride or burn with hatred, they can make us zealots in behalf of the program they espouse. 6. What response do the authors of this essay want from their audience? The author wants the readers know that the propaganda is around them and wants them to aware of this propaganda. With recognizing the types of propaganda, the writer implicitly hopes that as intelligent citizens, the readers are not gullible by the propagandas. 7. This essay, written in the 1930s, refers to specific people and events. Many of the references are dated. What present-day people and events would be appropriate replacements for those named at the end of paragraph 7 (todays bad name include....) Fascist, demagogue, dictator, red, financial oligarchy, communist, muckraker, alien, outside agitator, economic royalist, utopian, rabble-rouser, troublemaker, tory, constitution wrecker. 8. Where is the thesis? Is it fully developed in the essay? In paragraph 4, i think yes. Because, the author explain the thesis in the other paragraph one by one 9. Classification is the rhetorical device used to organize this essay, but definition and comparison and contrast are also important. Find examples of this rhetorical devices I found three rhetorical devices from this text, such as: Why are we fooled by these devices? In my opinion, effectiveness of this conclusion is flexible. because, the author positioned of the plain folks and the band wagon as a common propaganda but card stacking is hardest to detect. Its like the cornering of card stacking as the types, so that we assume that its hard to find in every aspect. Although we lack the information about it, at least we can feel and comprehend about it, thats why we should think its not the hardest, but its harder than.
