Education Programs at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center

Welcome to the 2013-14 Season!


It is our hope that you had a relaxing summer and are prepared to be inspired this season. Bringing in exciting new titles like Swazzles Dream Carver, Washington, D.C.s Step Afrika! and returning favorites such as Nebraska Theatre Caravans A Christmas Carol and ArtsPowers Laura Ingalls Wilder, this season promises to bring your classroom lessons to life. Not only do you have the opportunity of introducing your students to the inspiration of performing arts this season, but also to make lasting impressions by integrating the arts into your classroom. With three new Kennedy Center Partners in Education Classroom Connections teacher workshops, nationally recognized arts integration teaching techniques will be brought directly to the Fox Cities. Dont miss these hands-on workshops led by experts in the fields of education and performing arts. With topics focused on reading comprehension, character development and poetry there is something to be learned by all. Also, check out our new study guides that have been updated to provide the most relevant resources for you and your students. Filled with lesson plans, community activities and fun facts that meet state standards, each guide will help you connect the performance to your classroom. This season, let the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center be more than just a field trip and share the magic of the performing arts with your students. The Bemis Company Education Series offers educational performances that connect to classroom curriculum, introduce the live performing arts and broaden the creative cultural horizons for PreK-12 students. Below we have featured a few of our favorites this season.

Swazzles Dream Carver Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013


Show times: 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. / Grades: K-5 / Tickets: $5
Through song and bilingual text, experience the story of a young boy named Mateo who carves his dreams into wooden toys that come to life. Based on the award-winning childrens book by Diana Cohn.

When a special package arrives from Great Uncle Drosselmeyer on Christmas Eve, Max and Ruby are surprised to find new toys from Tchaikovskys Nutcracker Ballet.

Its not easy being a bug, especially on the first day of school! But luckily for Worrying Worm, Fearless Fly and Sassy Spider, every creature can find its own special talent.

William Shakespeares Hamlet

To be or not to be that is one of the hardest questions students face when studying the works of William Shakespeare. Help your students experience Shakespeare as it was originally intended and watch the revenge of the young Prince of Denmark unfurl on stage.

Whos the Hero? Confronting Bullying Through the Arts


Workshop Leader: Karen Erickson

Suggested for educators of Grades 3-6 Date and time: Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, 4-7 p.m. Fee: $30 or $25/ AASD staff
With a focus on developing quality character traits, this workshop delves into the core issues of bullying and shows how the arts can serve as a powerful addition to any character education program. Serving as a conversation starter, drama gives students an opportunity to explore the roles of hero, bully, bystander, instigator and target. The drama activities also utilize concentration, image work, collaboration and communication of lines spoken by characters. Back by popular demand, workshop leader Karen Erickson will lead educators through an exciting, hands-on approach to the topic of bullying. Reasons to attend: Find creative ways to deal with the issue of bullying Introduce your students to new drama techniques Help students develop skills in concentration, collaboration and communication

Kennedy Center Partners in Education Classroom Connections Teacher Workshops


Increasing evidence has indicated that students have a more active, motivating and meaningful learning experience when taught through the arts. Classroom Connections teacher workshops will prepare you to integrate the arts into your classroom, resulting in more effective and engaging lessons. Even if you have never been trained in the arts, these hands-on workshops are presented in a way that make you confident and comfortable to use the arts to teach core curriculum. Taught by professional teaching artists who provide practical tools that promote active investment in the curriculum, these workshops will give you fresh and exciting ways to educate. All workshops are held at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center.
These workshops were developed in association with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Poetry Off the Page

Workshop Leader: Glenis Redmond

Suggested for educators of Grades 4-12 Date and time: Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, 4-7 p.m. Fee: $30 or $25/ AASD staff
Based on the belief that poetry, in addition to being written and read, should be performed. This workshop will help educators introduce students to the topic of poetry. Participants will learn ways to help students learn brainstorming techniques, imagery and layering to write powerful and effective poems. Clear and easy poetic structures and formats empower students to expand their imaginations and cross creative boundaries. Award-winning poet Glenis Redmond will share techniques on how to help students express themselves through their words and bring their poetry to life on the page as well as off the page. Reasons to attend: Inspire teachers and students to engage with poetry Stimulate creative word choices and how to use them in nontraditional manners Learn strategies to help students improve their presentation skills

Building Reading Comprehension through Sound and Rhythm


Workshop Leader: Imani Gonzalez

Suggested for educators of Grades 1-5 Date and time: Thursday, April 10, 2014, 4-7 p.m. Fee: $30 or $25/AASD staff
Enhance student learning by using sound and rhythm to explore ways to help students develop reading comprehension strategies and make connections between music and language. Workshop leader, Imani Gonzalez guides educators through a process of helping students create a Soundscape; a way to retell the story that connects students to the storys tone, mood, setting and the characters culture. This learning process helps students attend to sensory images, use questioning strategies, respond to inference and determine importance of information. Educators will learn how to help students gain listening skills through collaboration, build interpretation skills through communication and improve reading fluency through creativity. By teaching through music, your students will attain a new level of comprehension when they experience seeing, hearing and feeling through their reading. Reasons to attend: Tie this workshop into upcoming performances of TAO: Phoenix Rising or Step Afrika! for an arts integrated unit of study Learn how music can make use of students aural, visual, analytical and creative skills
